"Who are you, and why are you following me?" He blew hot to my face, but my brows lifted in surprise at his words.
"I should be the one asking that question," I retorted. "Who are you?''
"You are the one who is sneaking around the camp building in the dead of the night with your face covered with a face mask. You are the suspicious one here, so if anyone will ask a question, that should be me," I sputtered hard, gathering all my courage to speak. My heart beat as I heard his lips give a devilish smirk.
"It is my business. Whatever I am doing is my business, and I do not owe you any explanation. Don't get caught up in something that does not concern you. Mind your business and stay the hell away from mine." He gnashed.
"And about seeing me, don't you dare say a word."
"Are you threatening me right now?" I burst. You should actually be begging me not to tell the agents about you sneaking around, but instead, you chose to threaten me!" My face was batched in unbelief.
"Beg you?" He uttered with disdain.
"You should be grateful I am threatening you. If you dare say a word of it, then I will take you down with me. After all, we did it together, didn't we?" He murmured, and my eyes widened to his words.
"I don't even know who you are. How could you say I know something about whatever you planned to do!" I barred out.
"Exactly, you know nothing. That's why it will be easy to drag you down with me. Say a word about me to the agents, and I will make them know we are in this together." his voice sounded like a threat, and I swallowed emptiness at it.
Outside, noises, including the agents' loud, thudding footsteps, could be heard. He walked to the door and gazed at the agents through the little keyhole. They stood outside as their eyes scanned the area.
"Where could he have gone?" One of the agents slurred.
"This is the last spot we saw him," another blurted.
"Just keep searching. I think he might be hiding somewhere," an agent declared. The agents went different ways in search of the mysterious guy, but one agent remained on the spot; his eyes reverted to the door where we stood behind. He walked towards the door. Another agent, also in search, noticed him as he marched gently to the door.
"What are you doing?" He questioned, and the agent placed his finger on his lips, signaling to the second agent to keep quiet.
"I think there are people in there," he muttered.
My eyes went wide in fear at the agent's words. If they opened the door and found me with this strange man, then there's no way I would be able to prove my innocence. My heart raced as fear lunged up at me.
I could hear the slow but steady footsteps of the agents watching towards us.
The guy turned from the door and took a few strides to me. I shifted backward as he stepped closer to me.
"Go out," he uttered, his deep voice giving a command.
"Are you crazy? If I go out now, then I will be saying goodbye to my chance of becoming an agent. They will never believe I have nothing to do with you," I slurred in reply.
"I am not asking you to go out like you know me. Go out and distract the agents from here if you do not want to be caught up in everything. You were the one who got yourself involved in what doesn't concern you when you chose to follow me, so go out there and correct your mistake," he blurted, and my forehead furrowed in frustration.
I wasn't sure if I was about to do the right thing. What if they suspect me and check the room? Then I will be done if they find him. My heart pounded in fear as anxiety crept to my face.
"You have to act normal and can't let them suspect you or else greet your dream goodbye," his voice sounded again, and my face crept in a determination to him. I can't let him ruin my dreams.
With this in mind, I walked to the door. The agents were already close to it, and they attempted to open it when I creaked it open. Their faces snitched in surprise.
"What are you doing here?" One of the agents burred.
"Why were you behind the door?" The second uttered. Fear and anxiety simmered through me, but I calmed myself, making sure they did not notice my anxiety.
"I am one of the trainees, and I came out to enjoy the late-night breeze, but I lost my way, and I couldn't return to our building," I muttered, and the agents exchanged glances before glancing back at me.
"She was the one behind the door," one of the agents said to the other.
"Take care of her. I will go search for another area," an agent said before leaving.
"Follow me," the second murmured, and I followed behind him as he went away. My eyes reverted to the door as I watched the guy opening slightly and peering at me as I walked away. Seeing me and the agents gone, he left the room and went back to his building.
"Don't come out late at night. It is against the rule. If any of your trainers catch you, you will be in huge trouble, so do not attempt to leave your room late at night again," the agents muttered, and I nodded my head curtly.
"Thank you," I slurred as he walked me back to the building. I watched as I entered and went away to my room.
Glancing back and seeing the agent gone, I breathed a sigh of relief as I walked quietly back into the room, tiptoeing inside to ensure I did not wake my fast-awake roommates. I walked to my bed and sat down. My hand flew to my chest. I had never been so anxious before—all because of that weirdo that I didn't even know anything about.
My eyes gleamed in annoyance at him. I glanced out the window and to the stars; staring at the beautiful starry sky made my heart ease up a little, and a wave of refreshed energy washed up at me. With the anxiety of my heart relieved, I slept on my bed, curdling my secret portrait of Agent James as I drifted off to sleep.
The agents still searched the building for the guy but found no trace of him. Seeing the time passed by, they all returned to their post. The room broke into was checked, and nothing had been stolen; all the information was still instant.
"Although nothing was stolen, that only means the intruder failed, and since he failed, he will be bound to return. All of you should prepare for that and keep your guards up," one of the agents declared to the others, and they bowed to him before they all left for their respective posts.
Time was passing by slowly; the gentle morning breeze blew as the clock was slowly ticking, approaching its number four. The stars in the sky were gradually fading off and were replacing its lovely sight with a carefree one. The gentle breeze blew, accentuating the peace of the atmosphere.
The entire camp building was as silent as a graveyard. So silent that one could hear a pin drop. All the trainees were still cuddling on their beds, each enjoying the morning sleep. Peace hovered in the atmosphere. A peace that was struck off by a loud repelling sound.
We were all still asleep when a loud beat was thrown into our speakers. Immediately, the trainees jerked up from bed. The loud sound continued for a full minute. I jerked up from bed as the sound dominated the entire building.
"What is going on?" I uttered the same question that stormed through the minds of the other trainees.
"All trainees, get in your uniforms and run down to the field in five minutes!" A deep masculine voice sounded in the speaker, and we all sprung into action.
Mimi was still asleep in her bed. She had covered her ear with the pillow to prevent hearing the loud sound that dominated the entire air earlier.
"Mimi, get up." I jerked her up.
"We have just five minutes to dress and get to the field," I informed her, and her mouth erupted into a grumble.
"How is that even possible? It's just four in the morning, but we still have time to sleep," she muttered.
"Four minutes left," the voice sounded in the speaker, and Mimi's eyes flew open.
"Four minutes!" she exclaimed and quickly got down from bed, joining the rest of us as she quickly put on her uniform.
The loud thudding sounds of several footsteps matching down the building could be heard as the trainees stormed out of their room, each running to the field.
"Two minutes left!" the voice gnawed, and the trainees' emergence increased. I dashed out of the room, still trying to wear my jacket, and stormed down to the field with the other employees in a rush.
Four agents stood on the field in their uniforms, their hands behind their backs, as they watched the trainees run to the field and line up in front of them.
The path to becoming an agent had officially begun for us all.
