Chapter 1 - Seams

As I take a seat on my bed, I gaze at my attendant who is standing at attention, calm yet fretful. I finally speak up

"I had never thought that my country could have fallen so far, its ripping apart at the seams. People are ill, unfed, and mistreated by others. My family is losing its place among the others." My eyes wander around my once luxurious room, now as bare as a prison, I take a look at where many of the things I cared about were, the fancy pen that I got as a birthday present from my friend was no longer there, the dresser that I made with my dad long gone and my pet no longer with me.

"I think I should leave this place; singularity is a grand boon that has been handed to me, it will help me gain status in other lands"

I look into my attendant's eyes, and he looks back into my eyes with a respectful and loyal gaze. He is a good man, always loyal to me and my family, he does not ask for much just a reasonable wage and a place to stay. I can tell that he sometimes pitied me and my family.

He finally speaks up,

"Lady Elysia, it is up to you, as a lowly servant I should hold no sway over what you decide to do" he ended his words with a slight but respectable bow. "But if I must suggest... then think about what you will do next" after a short pause he spoke up again "If you decide to leave, remember that I will follow you, as I have sworn to do so. But think carefully."

I look up from the ground and look for something, anything that can help me decide. I reach out, grabbing at the air, the space around my hand distorts into a haze of purple and blue. As it distorts and shifts in its colour it darkens into a deep reflection-less black, as it continues to swirl it starts to open into a hole in space itself. I reach in and pull out a coin, fidgeting around with it in my hands. "I... I will just... flip a coin. heads mean staying, tails mean leaving" I look up at my last remaining attendant, looking for his opinion on what I am doing. after a short pause I toss the coin up, watching it flutter about in the air and stop at its apex, as I think about the many problems in the county, the things that led me to having to do this and the things like my friends and family who weren't that bad.

As the coin slowly falls back down onto the ground as it continues to come to a stop, I start to think about what I truly want and even though it lands on heads I decide that it would do me better to leave

"We will leave in the darkest hour of morning" I speak up after it finally lands, letting out a deep exhale of breath I was unaware I was holding.

My attendant clearly sees that I have chosen something different from what the coin landed on but silently nods understanding that in the end it is up to me.

"As you wish Lady Elysia" and in the same vein as last time he speaks up again after a short pause "Your decision has been made, and I will follow without hesitation. We will leave, and we will face whatever awaits us together."

I get up and walk to my closet, I reach out my left hand and I focus a bit more to speed up the same process as I used to summon the coin, instead of a small haze that turned into an abyssal black my hand was absorbed in a glow of purple and blue. I reach up and swipe my wrist downwards in a swift motion, tearing through the fabric of space. I start to throw everything I own into the tear of space. as I throw my belongings into the tear, my heart drops to my stomach seeing things from my childhood; a time where my life was happier and simpler. a time where the county I was in the running of succession for was not a failing land. a time where the trees seemed to glow, and days were peaceful.

After my room is as bare as its plain yellowing white walls, I turn around to face my door, and I start to ponder whether I should talk to my family or not. Eventually I took a seat on my bed. I look down at my hands thinking of what I should do next. About what is ahead. Other towns, cities, places I could go, but in the end, my mind settles on Luminia, the essence capital of the world. It is not just a place of opportunity; it is a place where I might finally belong. I have made my choice, and there is no turning back now. In Luminia, people with the favour of the gods also have the favour of the people. It is a land where those who are skilled are revered. A place where those who are talented with essence thrive.

Unlike my county luminia was a beautiful place where most were fed, people were fairly treated, and people like me were more respected by the public. A place where everyone had a right to learn how to manipulate essence and open a gate.

I once again tear through space and pull out a map and writing tool. I start to plot the journey and route we will take, from my home to a neighbouring town, through the mountains and finally into the country of Luminia.

After a few hours of packing and planning my route, it is finally time for me to say goodbye to this failing county, a place with a grip and failing future that I do not believe in. I go to an altar and start to pray for a safe journey, hoping that a god decides to listen to my prayers.

as time passes and I pray for hours on end, the moon rises to its apex, I walk outside greeted by my attendant, wearing a dark robe covering him entirely, I too am wearing the same dark and discrete garb,

"let's leave"
