Chapter 18 - The Prince’s Arrival

The days passed in eerie silence. Evelyne no longer saw the shadow in the trees, but she knew he was still there. Watching. Protecting.

She found herself waiting by the window each evening, hoping for a sign of him. She whispered her gratitude into the wind, though she doubted he could hear her. And yet, each morning, a new black-feathered arrow was embedded in the wood of her balcony—a silent response.

But her solitude would not last.

One evening, a procession of torches flickered along the distant road. The sound of hooves against stone echoed through the valley. Evelyne's heart tightened as she recognized the banners.

Aldric, the Crown Prince of Caldris, had arrived.

She had heard rumors of him—golden-haired, regal, a man of ambition and charm. He was said to be the brightest hope of his father's kingdom. His presence here could mean only one thing: an offer of marriage.5

The castle doors swung open, and the prince strode in with a confidence that commanded attention. Clad in navy and gold, he exuded nobility. His piercing blue eyes locked onto Evelyne's, and for a fleeting moment, she felt as though she were a bird caught in a snare.

"My lady," he greeted, bowing low. "It is an honor to finally meet you."

Evelyne inclined her head. "Your Highness. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

Aldric smiled. "A kingdom is only as strong as its alliances. Your family's name is one of great renown, even after tragedy. Caldris would be honored to bind our houses together."

Evelyne felt her breath catch. This was not just a visit. It was a proposal wrapped in diplomacy.

She should have been flattered. A union with Aldric would restore her family's prestige, ensure her protection, and bring prosperity to Avarinth. But something deep inside her hesitated.

She thought of the shadow in the woods. Of the arrows. Of the silent guardian who had kept her safe for so long.

"My lord," she began carefully, "I appreciate your words. But I have lived in solitude for many years. This is quite sudden."

.

Aldric stepped closer, his voice softening. "I do not wish to force your hand, my lady. But I believe we would make a formidable pair. Allow me time to prove it to you."

Evelyne nodded, though her heart was uncertain.

From the forest, Alec watched. His fingers tightened around his bowstring. The prince had come to claim what he had protected for so long. He should have known this day would come. But as he saw the look in Evelyne's eyes, the hesitation, the doubt—he knew this was far from over.
