Chapter 1 - Prologue

I always felt magic inside of me. In moments of complete calmness - wandering through a grove, listening to whispers of the wind in treetops, lying on the grass, contemplating continuous change of clouds, or standing on the edge of a cliff, comprehending the immensity of opening space - it was born deep in the chest as a bright star and welled up inside the entire body with a steady light. Then I felt its great power, I felt an extraordinary happiness.

I always felt that there was something wrong with me. In moments of complete happiness, when magic filled me, at the same time, I experienced an extraordinary longing. It seemed that, having received this gift, I had lost something essential. In this melancholy, I felt that I mustn't have been alive, I must have been dead instead. My first memory was of a large spot of light moving towards me. As it got closer, it began to take the form of a white unicorn. I couldn't take my eyes off this amazing beast. I realised that it was my life. Then, another spot of light appeared and also flew towards me with enormous speed. Emerald-coloured and cold, it was full of anger and hatred. I realised that it was my death, I realised that I should have died... but I didn't. Right an instant before it reached me, the unicorn stretched his wings and embraced me. The green light covered us both. Since then, the three of us have been existing as one.

Was I rescued? Was it worth it? Were these eighteen years worth the effort? Eventually, the headmaster won...

As the green light flared up for the third time, the boy fell dead and father also collapsed to the ground; I shut my eyes. Silvery rivulets of magic flowed along the surface from me, evaporating and filling the space above the lawn with a shimmering haze. I was emptying like a punched vessel. I pushed aside my thoughts and feelings, preventing them from stopping me. When all the magic had gone from me, there was nothing left to restrain the second curse, nor the very first one that has surrounded me throughout my life. Has everything that was done should've been done that way. Have I only lived for this moment? I see a faint glimmer of light that is filling up my body. I hear someone's quiet soft call... of my ancestors? - it is born deep in the chest, and I think that it is my death.

I stand on the edge of a high cliff, stretching both sleeves into the horizon. The stormy wind blows my hair. Far below my feet, mighty waves break on the rocks. I breathe in fresh air and feel calm. The body begins to lose weight, then form, thoughts and memory begin to leave consciousness. I am dissolving into eternity, I am becoming eternity. Somewhere in the dense mist of time, my name is being erased from a yellowed page of the book. Eventually, the cliff won...
