Chapter 11 - Chapter 9: Shadow of the Past: Confession of Loyalty and Seal of Debts

The silence in the limousine was pressing on his ears. After the nighttime foray into the port and the confrontation with Moretti, everyone was in their own thoughts. Choi Seong-jae stared out the window without expressing any emotion. Marco Visconti, always cheerful, was silently clenching his fists at the same time. Kim, as usual, was as impenetrable as a stone statue. Only Choi Woo Jin, the lieutenant, could hardly contain his anger, his face burning with humiliation.

In that silence, everyone recalled their past, the things that had led them to Choi Seong-Jae.

Choi Sung-Jae gave the command - "Tell yourself about." Kim and Marco knew that if he gave an order - he didn't tolerate disobedience.

Marco Visconti:

Marco was born in a small town in Sicily. His family was connected to the Mafia from long ago. His father was Caporegime, a respected man, but one day he made the mistake of going the way of the powerful Don. He was killed and Marco had to flee to survive.

He wandered around Europe, making a living as best he could. He was a thief, a con man, a mercenary fighter... Until he ended up in Seoul, where his enormous largesse took him.

That's when he met Choi Sung-jae. The latter saw potential in him and offered him a job. Marco, having no other choice, honestly. And he didn't regret it.

Choi Seon Jae gave him what he'd been looking for: power, respect, family. He saw Seon Jae as a leader who could change the world. And he was ready to serve him for the rest of his life.

"I saw power in you, Sung-Jae," Marco had once confessed. - "A power that can change the world. And I want to be a part of it."

Kim:

Kim grew up in the slums of Seoul. His parents were alcoholics and he was orphaned early on. He wandered the streets, stealing, fighting to survive.

One day, he met Choi Seon Jae. The latter saves him from certain death by paying for his debts.

Kim impressed him with his strength, his intelligence, his coolness. He saw in him someone who could protect him, someone who could give him a purpose in life.

He offered Choi Sung-Jae his faith, and he accepted it. Kim became his shadow, his right hand, his most loyal servant.

"I owe you my life, Sun Jae," he once said. - "I will serve you until the day I die."

Choi Sung-Jae listened to their story in silence. He knew that nothing in this world is free. Everyone pays for their dreams, for their ambitions.

Marco had paid with his freedom, Kim with his life. And he was willing to accept that price.

Choi Woo Jin looked at his comrades. He couldn't understand what they found in this Korean.

"I'm only here for power," he thought. - "I want to be the most significant, and Choi Sung-Jae can help me do that."

But Choi Sung-Jae sensed his thoughts. He knew that Woo Jin wasn't loyal to him the way Kim and Marco were. But he needed him. For now.

Finally, the limo arrived at Choi Sung-jae's penthouse. They got out of the car and headed to the apartment.

There were new things ahead, new problems, new authorities. And they were ready for it. Together.

Choi Sung-jae looked at his men. He saw in them a reflection of himself. Broken, maimed, but strong and ready to go all the way.

"We are a family," he said. - "And we will edit this city."
