Chereads / Arranged Bond / Chapter 8 - Midnight Strike

Chapter 8 - Midnight Strike

The gala's chaos had barely settled when Liam's phone buzzed with an urgent warning from his lab security system. His heart stopped as live camera feeds showed dark forms slipping through the building's shadows.

"Not again," he whispered, already running for the door. His dress clothes would have to do - there wasn't time to change.

Julian caught his arm before he could reach the elevator. "You're not going alone."

"I can handle-"

"This isn't about whether you can handle it." Julian's eyes glowed silver in the dim passage. "This is about not having to."

Something warm unfolded in Liam's chest at those words, but he pushed the feeling aside. His lab was in danger - everything he'd worked for could be destroyed in minutes.

They took Julian's car, speeding through Tenebrous City's empty streets. Purple lightning still split the sky, throwing eerie shadows across the buildings. The storm from the gala hadn't faded - if anything, it had gotten stronger.

"Victoria's involved," Julian said as they drove. "That purple magic signature is everywhere lately."

"But why?" Liam checked his security feeds again. "She just tried to embarrass me at the gala. Why escalate to breaking and entering?"

"Because humiliation wasn't her real goal." Julian's hands tightened on the driving wheel. "She wanted to see your crystal tech in action. To confirm what she was stealing."

They reached the lab building in record time. Emergency lights pulsed along the passageways as they crept inside, their footsteps eerily silent on the polished floors.

Liam led the way to his private study space, where he kept his most sensitive projects. The door hung open, lock mechanisms sparking with leftover purple energy. Inside, three figures in dark clothes were gathering equipment and study materials.

"Stop right there!" Liam's green magic burst to life, illuminating the room.

The attackers spun around. Their faces were hidden behind magical masks, but their leader's laugh was chillingly familiar.

"Right on time." Victoria's voice dripped with pleasure as she removed her mask. "I was hoping you'd show up to defend your precious toys."

"This is corporate theft," Julian growled, moving forward. "The council won't ignore this, Victoria."

"The council?" She laughed again. "You still don't understand what's really happening, do you? This was never about business politics."

She pulled out a crystal pendant - identical to the one they'd found shattered in the library area. "This is about power. Real power. The kind your pet Omega has accidentally stumbled upon."

Liam bristled at being called a pet, but his attention was caught by the pendant. It pulsed with familiar energy - the same fusion of magic and technology they'd made in his lab.

"You stole our research," he accused. "But why? You have your own tools, your own tech."

"Because your little experiment proved something I've suspected for years." Victoria's eyes gleamed with fanatic determination. "Crystal tech isn't just about blending magic and science. It's about breaking the old rules. Changing what's possible."

Her pendant flared with purple light, and suddenly the air was thick with sparking energy. The other two attackers raised their hands, adding their power to hers.

"The ancient families have hoarded their secrets for too long," Victoria growled. "It's time for a new order. One where power isn't passed - it's taken."

She thrust her hand forward, shooting a wave of corrupted magic straight at Liam. He raised his own shields, but the attack was unlike anything he'd faced before. It tore through his shields like they were paper.

Julian moved without thinking. He jumped in front of Liam, silver magic blazing. The moment their powers joined, something extraordinary happened.

Instead of just blocking Victoria's attack, their combined magic caused a shockwave that sent her stumbling backward. Silver and green energy spiraled together, making patterns that seemed to sing with ancient power.

"No!" Victoria's face twisted with rage. "That's impossible!"

But it was happening. Julian and Liam's magics weren't just working together - they were changing each other. Liam felt his power increasing exponentially, guided by Julian's strength. And Julian's traditional magic was changing, becoming more flexible and innovative.

"Ready?" Julian's speech was soft but certain.

Liam nodded, letting their connection strengthen. Moving as one, they focused their combined power at Victoria and her accomplices.

The resulting blast of silver-green energy shook the entire building. Victoria barely managed to raise a shield in time. Her pendant cracked, purple light sputtering.

"Fall back!" she ordered her people. "We got what we came for anyway."

Smoke bombs filled the air, and by the time it cleared, the intruders were gone. But they'd left behind scattered papers and broken equipment - clear signs of their rushed search.

"Are you alright?" Julian turned to Liam, his hands gentle as they checked for damage.

"I'm fine, but..." Liam stared at their still-merged magic. "What just happened? That kind of magical fusion shouldn't be possible."

"It shouldn't be." A new voice made them both spin around.

Aria stood in the doorway, her color-shifting eyes fixed on their joined powers. "But then, that's rather the point."

"What do you mean?" Julian demanded, automatically pulling Liam closer.

"You've begun to fulfill the prophecy." Aria moved into the room like she was floating. "The first true Alpha-Omega magical bond in over a thousand years."

Liam's breath caught. "True bond? But those are just tales."

"Like so many legends, they're built on forgotten truths." Aria touched one of the broken crystal pieces on the floor. It sparked with leftover silver-green energy. "In ancient times, certain Alphas and Omegas could form connections that transcended regular magical limits. Their powers didn't just work together - they developed together."

"That's what Victoria was talking about," Liam realized. "Breaking the old laws."

"Yes." Aria's face darkened. "But she doesn't understand the price of such power. The sacrifices needed to maintain it."

"What sacrifices?" Julian's arm tightened around Liam's waist.

Before Aria could answer, alarms blared throughout the building. Secondary blasts rocked the foundation, and purple lightning split the sky outside.

"Victoria's not done," Liam said, running to check his systems. "She's trying to overload the building's magical grid!"

Julian instantly moved to help, their powers automatically synchronizing again. But Aria's words echoed in both their minds - what price would this growing bond demand? What changes lay ahead?

In her secret sanctuary, Victoria clutched her cracked pendant and smiled despite her injuries. "Found you," she whispered to the stolen study in her hands. "The key to it all. Now we'll see who really deserves power."

Senator Blackwood watched through magical spying as his son and the Omega worked to save the lab. His cold smile never changed. Everything was going according to plan - even the parts he hadn't planned himself.

And in the spaces between moments, in the weave of magic itself, ancient forces stirred. The prophecy was developing, but prophecies were tricky things. They showed the way but not the price. They offered power but not peace.

The true test was just starting. For in the world of supernatural politics and ancient magic, the most dangerous ties were often the most precious. And the greatest threats came not from enemies, but from the decisions we make to protect what we love.

Julian and Liam's magic continued to spiral together, getting stronger with each passing moment. Neither noticed how their individual auras were slowly changing color, becoming something completely new.

Something that hadn't been seen in a thousand years.

Something that would change everything.

The night wasn't over yet. And in Tenebrous City, the darkest hours often held the brightest discoveries - and the deadliest truths.

After all, some tales are better left forgotten. Some skills are better left unchanged.

But it was too late for that now.

The storm raged on, and somewhere in the chaos, fate itself held its breath.

Waiting.

Watching.

Ready to collect its payment.
