The morning came too soon.
Jin-Woo barely felt the hours pass before his alarm blared, cutting through the silence like a blade. He blinked against the dim light filtering through the curtains, his body heavy, his thoughts sluggish.
For a moment, he lay there, staring at the ceiling.
It was the same every morning. The same dull ache in his bones. The same lingering exhaustion that sleep never quite erased.
He turned his head slightly, glancing at the clock on his bedside table. 5:30 AM.
Too early.
But that was normal. He had long since stopped waiting for rest to truly restore him.
With a quiet sigh, he pushed himself up.
His tiny apartment was cold in the early morning light. The heater had broken weeks ago, and he hadn't had the money to fix it.
Jin-Woo moved through the familiar motions of his routine. A quick, cold shower. A simple breakfast—just some rice and eggs. He ate mechanically, barely tasting the food. His body needed the energy, but eating had become just another necessity, not something to enjoy.
When he finished, he reached for his worn-out jacket and slung it over his shoulders. His Hunter ID sat on the counter next to his keys, the plastic card reflecting the dull light.
He stared at it for a moment before picking it up.
His fingers traced the lettering on the card.
Sung Jin-Woo
E-Rank Hunter
His name. His status. His prison.
He shoved it into his pocket.
The city was just beginning to wake up as he stepped outside. The air was crisp, the sky a soft, pale blue streaked with the first hints of sunlight. People moved through the streets, some on their way to work, others just beginning their day.
Jin-Woo walked with purpose, but his mind was elsewhere.
Today was just another job. Another raid. Another step forward in the endless struggle of survival.
And yet, somewhere deep inside, there was a strange feeling. A heaviness in his chest, a quiet voice whispering that something was different.
That today was going to change everything.
He ignored it.
---
The meeting point was a rundown building near the outskirts of the city, where independent Hunter teams gathered before raids. It was a small group today—barely a dozen people.
Joohee was already there, standing off to the side, adjusting the strap of her healer's bag. When she saw Jin-Woo, her brows furrowed in concern.
"You look tired."
He offered a lopsided grin. "I always look tired."
She didn't laugh.
Instead, she sighed, stepping closer. "If you're not feeling well, you can sit this one out. No one would blame you."
He shook his head. "I need the money."
Joohee frowned but didn't argue. She had tried before, but she knew he wouldn't listen.
Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of the raid leader, an older Hunter named Song Chi-Yul. He was a seasoned fighter, though past his prime, and one of the few Hunters Jin-Woo actually respected.
"Alright, listen up!" Song called, gathering the group. "This is a low-level dungeon. Should be an easy job, but don't get careless. Follow the formation, and we'll be in and out in no time."
There were nods all around.
Jin-Woo exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulders. Just another raid. Just another day.
Or so he thought.
---
The dungeon was darker than usual.
Jin-Woo felt it the moment they stepped inside.
The air was thick, heavy, almost suffocating. The usual damp, musty scent of underground caverns was there, but beneath it was something else. A faint, metallic tang that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
Something was wrong.
He glanced at Joohee. She looked uneasy, gripping her staff tightly.
Song Chi-Yul noticed it too. He frowned, glancing at the walls, the jagged rocks surrounding them.
"This doesn't feel like an E-Rank dungeon…" he muttered under his breath.
Jin-Woo's stomach twisted.
Then the screams started.
A Hunter at the front of the group barely had time to react before something lashed out from the darkness, dragging him into the shadows. Blood sprayed across the cavern floor, a horrifying gurgling sound filling the air.
Panic erupted.
"What the hell?!"
"It's an ambush!"
"Run!"
The dungeon walls trembled as creatures poured from the darkness—hulking monsters with gleaming red eyes and razor-sharp claws.
Jin-Woo barely had time to draw his dagger before one lunged at him.
Pain exploded across his side as he was thrown back, slamming into the rocky ground. His vision blurred, his ears ringing.
He forced himself up, blood dripping from a deep gash on his arm.
His breath came in ragged gasps.
Too strong.
These monsters weren't E-Rank.
They weren't even D-Rank.
This was a trap.
Joohee screamed as one of the creatures closed in on her.
Jin-Woo moved before he could think.
His dagger slashed out, sinking into the monster's throat. It reared back, shrieking in pain, but another was already coming.
Too many.
Too strong.
He couldn't win.
He knew he couldn't win.
But he had to fight.
His muscles burned, his wounds throbbed, but he refused to stop moving.
One strike. Another.
A clawed hand slammed into his chest, knocking the air from his lungs.
He staggered, barely managing to stay on his feet.
Then he saw it.
At the end of the chamber, a massive stone door stood slightly open, a faint glow emanating from within.
A second chamber.
The monsters weren't just here to kill them.
They were pushing them inside.
For what?
Jin-Woo didn't have time to think.
Another blow sent him crashing to the ground. His vision swam, his body screaming in protest.
His fingers clawed at the dirt.
Too weak.
He was too weak.
Darkness crept into the edges of his sight.
The sounds of battle faded.
His heartbeat slowed.
Was this it?
Was this how he died?
As nothing?
A failure?
His mind screamed, rage and frustration clawing at his soul.
No.
No, he wasn't done.
He couldn't be done.
Not yet.
Not like this.
A faint chime echoed in the darkness.

His eyes widened.
Then, the world shattered.
