The dim glow of the bedside lamp cast long shadows across the small apartment. Jin-Woo sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the cracked ceiling. The walls were thin—he could hear the muffled voices of the neighbors arguing about something meaningless. Outside, the distant hum of traffic never ceased, the city never truly sleeping.
His body ached. A dull, persistent pain that never fully faded. Every raid left him with new bruises, new scars. He had long stopped counting them.
Slowly, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, fingers laced together. The old analog clock on the wall ticked steadily, marking each passing second with a quiet inevitability.
He closed his eyes.
"Why am I still doing this?"
The question lingered in the darkness of his mind.
It wasn't as if he believed things would change. No matter how many dungeons he cleared, no matter how much experience he gained, he never got stronger. He was stuck. Trapped in this body that refused to improve.
He was a Hunter in name only.
His grip tightened.
F-Rank stats. E-Rank status. A lifetime of failure.
No matter how many times he faced death, he couldn't escape the chains of his weakness.
A soft knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts.
"Oppa?"
Jin-Ah's voice was quiet, uncertain.
He glanced at the clock. 2:17 AM. She should have been asleep.
Pushing himself up, he opened the door. His little sister stood there, wrapped in a blanket, her dark eyes filled with worry.
"…You're not sleeping again," she said, looking past him at the untouched bed.
"I was about to." He forced a small smile, but she wasn't fooled.
Jin-Ah bit her lip, hesitating. "Are you… are you going to the raid tomorrow?"
Jin-Woo nodded.
She didn't say anything for a long moment. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper—
"Do you have to?"
His heart clenched.
This wasn't the first time she had asked him that. And it wouldn't be the last.
He reached out, gently ruffling her hair. "Don't worry, I'll be fine."
Her fingers tightened around the blanket. "You always say that."
And yet, every time he came home, he was covered in wounds.
Jin-Woo chuckled lightly, trying to break the heaviness in the air. "Well, I can't just sit around all day, right? Someone has to pay the bills."
She looked up at him. "I can get a part-time job."
"No." His voice was firmer than he intended.
She flinched slightly, and he immediately softened. "Jin-Ah, your job is to study. Don't worry about anything else."
"But—"
"No buts." He smiled again, this time more genuine. "Trust your older brother, okay?"
She hesitated before finally nodding. "…Okay."
"Good. Now go to sleep."
She lingered for a moment before turning away, padding back to her room.
Jin-Woo exhaled deeply, closing the door.
Lies.
He hated lying to her.
But what else could he do? Tell her the truth? That he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep this up? That every time he stepped into a dungeon, he felt like he was walking toward his death?
No.
He couldn't do that to her.
Jin-Woo sat back down, rubbing his face with both hands. His body screamed for rest, but his mind refused to quiet down.
Somewhere deep inside, a whisper of doubt gnawed at him.
"What if tomorrow is the last time?"
He shook his head violently, forcing the thought away.
No. He couldn't think like that.
He just had to survive.
Just a little longer.
