Chapter 31 - Chapter 31

Haruto Saito had previously used a Mental Enhancement Card, instantly doubling his chakra reserves. But this time, he consumed two at once, causing another explosive increase—his chakra reserves doubled again!

By estimation, each Mental Enhancement Card provided the chakra equivalent of a standard Genin. Haruto, already possessing a Genin's chakra, had now consumed three such cards, bringing his total chakra reserves to four times that of a typical Genin!

"Four times the chakra of a Genin... does that put me on par with a Chunin?" Haruto mused to himself.

It was hard to say. Chakra reserves alone weren't the defining factor of a ninja's strength. Take Naruto Uzumaki, for example—his chakra reserves rivaled a tailed beast's, yet he still had to train extensively, even earning the title of "dead last" in the academy.

Similarly, chakra amounts differed based on specialization. Ninjutsu users generally had higher reserves than Taijutsu specialists. However, there were exceptions—like Tsunade, who was both a medical ninja and a Taijutsu expert but possessed absurdly high chakra levels.

Using the Uchiha Clan as a benchmark, their chakra levels remained fairly standardized according to rank—higher ranks meant higher chakra reserves.

"I should be at least on par with a Chunin—maybe even stronger," Haruto concluded before shifting his focus to the new cards in his inventory. "Spirit, explain these newly obtained cards."

"Ding! Answering host's query:

Basic Chakra Restoration Card: Restores a portion of the host's chakra. Can be used consecutively.

Special Weapon Randomization Card: Grants a random weapon imbued with a special property.

Double Drop Rate Card: Allows the host to mark any hostile target for 24 hours. If killed within this period, drop rates are doubled.

Prestige Store Lock Card: Locks a selected item in the prestige store for one month.

Prestige Store Refresh Card: Immediately refreshes the store's inventory."

"Double Drop Rate!" Haruto's eyes gleamed. This was a game-changer—had he used it on Uesugi Kanna, he could have potentially obtained four Mental Enhancement Cards instead of two!

"I need to use this card on someone strong enough to give me good loot but weak enough for me to kill easily. No wasting it!"

Haruto carefully stored the Double Drop Rate Card before inspecting the Special Weapon Randomization Card. After a moment's hesitation, he asked, "Do I consume weapon cards the same way?"

"Yes!" the system spirit confirmed.

Crack!

Haruto bit into the card, shattering it into golden particles that flowed into his mouth, then emerged from his skin, swirling around his right arm before gathering in his hand.

"Ding! Congratulations, host! You have obtained the special weapon—'Heavy Mountain Blade'!"

A katana materialized in Haruto's grip. The blade had a dull gray hue, its edge slightly wider than normal, with an extended handle. At first glance, it looked unremarkable. Haruto tested its weight—manageable, not overly heavy.

"Heavy Mountain Blade?" Haruto murmured, then asked, "What makes this a special weapon?"

"Special weapons possess unique properties, similar to famous ninja tools such as Hatake Sakumo's Chakra Short Sword, the Uchiha Clan's Flame Fan, Orochimaru's Kusanagi Blade, and the Seven Ninja Swordsmen's legendary blades."

"Oh?" Haruto perked up. "Then what's the special property of the Heavy Mountain Blade?"

"Special Property: 'Heavy Mountain'—all attacks with this weapon deal double the user's physical strength."

Haruto blinked, processing the information. His normal strikes would now carry twice the impact when using this weapon.

For example, if he could normally deliver a blow with 500kg of force, this sword would make it 1000kg!

"This… this is insane!" Haruto marveled, running his fingers along the blade. "Wait, does this scaling have a limit? If I become a Kage-level ninja and can output 10,000kg of force, will this blade boost it to 20,000kg?"

"In theory, yes. However, the Heavy Mountain Blade does not have an indestructible property. While it is highly durable, it has a limit. If the force exceeds its endurance, the weapon may break."

"Got it!" Haruto grinned, snapping his fingers. The possibility of it breaking didn't bother him much—legendary weapons could be destroyed, just like Hatake Sakumo's White Fang sword in the original story.

As long as the 'Heavy Mountain' property remained unrestricted, this sword was a massive power boost!

Meanwhile, on a grassy lakeshore, three ANBU members stood around Uesugi Kanna's mutilated corpse, meticulously examining the wounds.

"Four hundred sixty-six slashes."

"Wait, here's another one… a diagonal cut overlapping previous wounds."

"Four hundred sixty-seven slashes? This kid's a psycho. Does he have some kind of mental disorder? This level of overkill isn't normal."

"Well, he's from Amegakure. Some craziness is expected," murmured Captain Chikawa, shaking his head. "I've seen people mutilate corpses before, but this? Over four hundred strikes? That's another level."

"Think he got injured? His clothes were shredded," another ANBU operative, Uta, noted.

"Doubt it. Probably got scraped up during the underwater battle. If he were seriously hurt, he'd be screaming for us to heal him by now."

"Fair point," Uta nodded. "That means his opponent wasn't higher than a Chunin—otherwise, he wouldn't have survived."

"Yeah, must've been a Chunin-level assassin. If it were a Jonin, Haruto wouldn't have stood a chance."

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

A series of masked figures flickered into existence by the lakeside. Within moments, half a dozen more ANBU arrived. At the front stood the legendary White Fang himself—Hatake Sakumo.

"Report," Sakumo ordered, scanning the corpse before freezing when he saw the face of the deceased.

"Captain, Haruto Saito killed him. He fought underwater, dragged the body ashore, and—well, you can see the aftermath for yourself. We counted 467 slashes… Captain? Captain?!"

Chikawa trailed off as he noticed Sakumo's stunned expression.

"Wait…" Sakumo spoke slowly, as if confirming a nightmare. "You're telling me… Haruto Saito killed him?"

"Yes, sir," Chikawa affirmed.

"No… it shouldn't be possible… that doesn't make sense…" Sakumo murmured, still staring at the corpse.

Chikawa's face darkened. "Captain, do you know this guy? Was he a black-market assassin?"

"Know him? He's Uesugi Kanna—formerly a Hidden Mist shinobi. He defected five years ago, operated solo for a while, then became a renowned assassin in the underground."

Chikawa inhaled sharply. "So he was a Jonin?!"

Sakumo shook his head grimly. "No. He was an Elite Jonin."
