14 - A Deadly Island and a Disgusting Encounter

Kara took the opportunity to pull out her fishing rod again while munching on some snacks until she eventually fell asleep.

After a couple of hours, someone spotted land.

—Sir! There's an island in sight! —reported a soldier, looking through binoculars from the mast.

—Good. Head there to gather supplies, —ordered Smoker, just as Kara woke up and stretched in her chair.

—Do you really want to stop there, White Head? That island looks pretty dangerous, —Kara said, noticing the color of the plants and the presence of strange creatures.

—Tsk. We'll check if there's drinkable water and leave. It looks like all those fruits are poisonous, —Smoker replied, disembarking with some soldiers.

Kara, on the other hand, decided to explore on her own since she had never visited that island before.

—WOW! All the animals here are poisonous, —she exclaimed, using a stick to push away a small scorpion that tried to sting her.

Meanwhile, a venomous spider was weaving its web in a nearby tree, surrounded by brightly colored mushrooms.

Suddenly, Kara heard something and decided to head back to the ship.

—Vice Admiral! We have a problem! Sergeant Tashigi has been poisoned! —a soldier reported as soon as he saw her arrive.

Kara quickly checked her and noticed a mosquito bite on her neck that was starting to turn purple.

—Seriously? Tsk! Aah… Call Smoker and tell him the mosquitoes are poisonous too. We better get out of here, —she said seriously while taking out a vial and handing it to Tashigi.

Tashigi could barely stay conscious.

—Drink this. It won't cure you, but it will buy us time until we find a place to treat you, —Kara said, placing the vial against her lips as Tashigi struggled to drink.

—Kara! What happened? —Smoker asked, arriving at full speed.

—We need to get the hell out of this place. Even the insects are poisonous, —Kara responded quickly. Just then, another soldier collapsed, poisoned.

Kara rushed over and handed him another vial.

Seeing the severity of the situation, Smoker didn't hesitate.

—Everyone aboard! Start the ship and move it away from the island! —he ordered firmly as yet another soldier fell.

—Kara, will that medicine cure them? —Smoker asked, noticing that the marines seemed to improve after drinking the remedy.

—No. It just slows their heart rate so the poison doesn't spread quickly through their blood, —Kara replied seriously.

—This medicine was mainly created to be applied to wounds to reduce bleeding. It's not supposed to be ingested, but the old witch who made it said a person could last a week in a semi-comatose state if they drank it, reducing their vital signs to a minimum.

—We won't reach Marineford or any base with competent doctors who can make an antidote in a week, —Smoker said, frowning as he weighed the options.

—Don't worry. Let's head to the Drum Kingdom. The creator of this medicine is there. She can help, —Kara said, taking out more vials and handing them to a nearby soldier. —Have them drink one every two hours.

—Mmm… What's going on? —Zoro asked, waking up with a yawn. Suddenly, a rock hit his head.

—What the hell, you damn woman?! —he yelled, rubbing his forehead in pain.

—Saving you from being poisoned like the others, —Kara replied, pointing at the rock, where a crushed purple mosquito lay lifeless.

Of course, it was a lie. The mosquito had tried to bite Kara a while ago, but she took the opportunity to hit Zoro while he was asleep.

—Poison? —Zoro looked around and saw Tashigi, along with at least five more soldiers lying on stretchers, being carried to the infirmary.

—Tsk. Do you have an Eternal Pose to Drum Island? If so, give it to me, —Smoker ordered.

Kara handed it over without hesitation, and Smoker immediately began giving orders to speed up the journey.

The Marine ship sailed nonstop for three days until they reached a winter region. The cold was so intense that every breath became visible in the air.

—Looks like we're close, —Kara said, sitting on the ship's mast.

—Old man, I see Drum Island! —she shouted, giving Smoker yet another nickname.

—Head in the direction the idiot is pointing, —Smoker responded, already used to Kara's constant nicknames.

The ship quickly approached the island, but both Smoker and Kara noticed a strange raft made of logs with a pirate flag anchored at the dock.

—Looks like this place is under attack, Smoker. I'll go ahead, —Kara said before jumping off and rushing toward the island.

At that moment, a guttural laugh echoed in the distance.

—Shehahahaha! This place has nothing. Let's set sail again, boys! —Blackbeard laughed heartily alongside his three crewmates, leaving a trail of destruction behind them.

—Wuhaha! Come on, Captain, we haven't fought anyone strong yet, —said Jesus Burgess, raising his arms to show off his muscles.

—Uhh… no one… cough cough… wanted my… apples… —muttered Doc Q, riding his horse, which looked just as sick as him.

—It was fate, —Van Augur said as he walked with his musket in hand.

—That's right, fate works in mysterious ways… like placing a pirate crew in front of me while I was having fun at sea, —a female voice sounded behind them.

—Shehahaha… Right? Hmm… Who just spoke? —Blackbeard asked, looking at his crew.

—Mmm… That would be me. Here, here, —Kara answered, waving at them with a smile as if they were old friends.

Van Augur quickly raised his musket and aimed at Kara's head.

—Who are you? —he asked, not taking his eyes off her.

—Me? That bearded guy knows me. But I'd prefer if you didn't point something so dangerous at me. You might end up hurting yourself, —Kara said, adopting a more serious expression.

Blackbeard's eyes widened in shock.

—Y-You… You're Vice Admiral Kara of the Marines… Kara the Psychopath!

Psychopath?! Hey! That wasn't my title last time I checked! —Kara protested, visibly annoyed.

—Yehaha! I don't know who you are, but die, —said Jesus Burgess as he grabbed a massive rock from the side and hurled it at Kara.

Kara simply raised her hand, and the rock shattered completely. Ignoring Burgess, she appeared in front of Blackbeard, who was already on guard to defend himself from her attack. With a kick, Blackbeard was sent flying several meters backward while cuts in a grid pattern appeared on his arms, which he had used to block.

—You too, for pointing something so dangerous at me, —Kara said as she punched Van Augur in the stomach just as he fired a bullet at her head. The bullet disintegrated into dust upon touching her skin.

—Ughh! —Van Augur grunted, gasping for air as he collapsed on the ground. His musket, on the other hand, had been reduced to scrap metal.

—Tsk, tsk. Harassing civilians is bad. Don't do it at home, —Kara said as she adjusted the glove on the hand she had just used to punch Van Augur.

The Crash Magic that passively covered her body had destroyed Van Augur's bullet, proving his skill as a marksman. Even with her moving at high speed, he had managed to fire directly at her head.

Meanwhile, Blackbeard had only received a few cuts from Kara's attack, showing that he had a solid understanding of Haki. Otherwise, his arms would have been turned into cubes of flesh. If someone was strong enough, especially in Haki, her ability would only damage their skin. But Logia users were her natural enemies since they were elements themselves. That was why she had been able to harm Akainu.

It wasn't like Devil Fruits, where Haki could fully protect the user. In this case, she only needed to use more magical power in her Crash Magic to injure them, depending on the opponent's Haki strength. Even so, if she went all out in battle, she could tear off a couple of Blackbeard's limbs. The problem was that doing so could also destroy the entire village, where she could sense people hiding, so she couldn't unleash her full power.

Imagining Blackbeard dodging one of her attacks—capable of easily destroying a mountain—was something she didn't want to happen. That's why she was holding back so much.

After all, Blackbeard wasn't as weak as he seemed. At the very least, he had the level of a standard Vice Admiral from headquarters.

Thus, Kara had to restrain herself while fighting the fatso.

—Tsk, tsk. How annoying, —Kara said as she prepared to attack again.

—Zehahahahahaha! Who would've thought we'd run into one of the strongest Vice Admirals? —Blackbeard said, rubbing his aching arms and staring at Kara. —It's an honor.

—Flattering me won't save you, Ugly Beard, —Kara said, smirking mockingly at Teach.
