Chapter 1 - Ravenswood manor

The iron gates of Ravenswood Manor groan open as you approach, the sky above churning with ominous clouds. The manor looms before you, its once grand facade now worn and foreboding. A shiver runs down your spine as you step onto the overgrown path leading to the entrance, the sound of rustling leaves the only greeting. The heavy door creaks ajar at your touch, revealing a dimly lit foyer that whispers of secrets long buried. You sense that every shadow could be hiding something—or someone.

As Rin Nakamura steps into the foyer, the door closes behind her with a resounding thud that echoes through the cavernous entrance hall. The air is thick with dust and the scent of mildew, a testament to the manor's long years of neglect. Cobwebs adorn the corners like forgotten decorations, and the once-opulent chandelier above hangs precariously, its crystals dulled by the passage of time.

Rin Nakamura's gaze falls upon the heavy wooden door she has just entered through. Its surface is weathered, with deep grooves and scratches that tell tales of its age. A large, ornate brass handle, tarnished green with time, serves as the door's only adornment. She notices a series of small, almost imperceptible notches around the keyhole, suggesting that the lock has been picked multiple times.

Rin Nakamura begins her search of the foyer, her eyes scanning the dimly lit space for any signs of abnormality or hidden compartments. She moves towards an antique side table, its once polished surface now covered in a thick layer of dust. Carefully, she opens the drawers, finding nothing but a few dried-up inkwells and some brittle, blank parchment.

Rin Nakamura turns her attention to the walls of the foyer. The wallpaper, a faded floral pattern, is peeling away in places, revealing the old stonework beneath. She runs her fingers along the surface, feeling for any inconsistencies. As she approaches the grand staircase, she notices a section of the wall where the paper appears to have been disturbed recently, the paste beneath still slightly tacky to the touch.

Rin Nakamura's fingers close around the cold, metallic object, and she carefully extracts it from the drawer. It's a small, ornate key, its design intricate and old-fashioned, with a series of symbols etched into its bow. The key feels unusually heavy in her hand, hinting at its significance. The symbols, while unfamiliar, seem to suggest a connection to the strange crest on the invitation she received.

With the mysterious key in hand, Rin Nakamura proceeds to examine the antique side table more closely. She runs her hands along its sides, back, and legs, searching for any sign of a compartment or lock that might correspond with the key she has just discovered. The table is solid, with no obvious drawers or hidden sections. However, as she crouches down to inspect the table's base, she notices a tiny, almost imperceptible keyhole camouflaged within the intricate woodwork. It is hidden beneath a small decorative ledge, cleverly designed to escape a casual observer's notice. Rin positions the key into the keyhole, and with a soft click, the hidden lock disengages, revealing a secret compartment in the table's interior.

Rin Nakamura cautiously opens the newly revealed compartment, her heart pounding in anticipation of what she might find. Inside, nestled on a velvet lining, lies a small, leather-bound journal, its pages yellowed with age. The cover is embossed with the same strange crest that she had seen on the invitation and the key. Alongside the journal, there is an old brass compass, its needle still functioning, and a folded piece of parchment. She carefully picks up the journal and opens it to the first page, revealing tightly packed, handwritten script that speaks of secrets and lineage. The compass feels heavy and warm in her hand, as if it has a story of its own to tell. The parchment, when unfolded, reveals a detailed map of Ravenswood Manor, with certain areas marked in.

As Rin Nakamura studies the map, she realizes that the marked areas correspond to locations within the manor that she has yet to explore. One of the marks indicates a spot on the second floor, near the west wing, which is labeled 'Library.' Another mark is in the basement, ominously circled and labeled 'Crypt.' The final mark is in a part of the manor that is not immediately recognizable, as it seems to be an addition to the original blueprint, possibly a hidden area not shown on the main floor plan.

Rin Nakamura, with the map in hand, takes a moment to orient herself within the manor. The foyer's grand staircase leads to the second floor, where the library awaits, likely holding more pieces of the puzzle. The basement, accessible via a door near the back of the foyer, calls to her detective's intuition with its promise of secrets hidden in the crypt.

Rin Nakamura, armed with the knowledge from the map and the journal, must decide her next move. The library on the second floor could hold vital information about the family's history and the secrets they guarded. The crypt in the basement might reveal more tangible evidence of the tragedies that befell the Ravenswood lineage. Then there's the mysterious unmarked area on the map, suggesting a hidden part of the manor that could be pivotal to unraveling the truth.
