Backstory:
(Ages 4-5)
Onyx Thorn was orphaned at the age of four. He never knew his parents, nor did anyone at the orphanage seem to know what happened to them. Unlike the other children, he was quiet, observant, and unnervingly intelligent for his age. Even the caretakers found him unsettling-his piercing amethyst-colored eyes always seemed to see more than they should.
Life in the orphanage was suffocating. The caretakers were apathetic at best, and the other children either ignored or bullied him. He never cried, never lashed out-he simply endured in silence.
But at the age of five, he made a choice most children would never dare to make. He left.
There was no grand escape. No chase. No resistance. One night, Onyx simply walked out the door, vanishing into the darkness of the city.
(Ages 5-7)
For two years, Onyx wandered the world alone. He traveled from town to town, learning to survive on his own. He scavenged, stole when necessary, and taught himself how to fight by watching others.
Despite his young age, he was calculating and adaptable. He understood people in a way most adults couldn't. He knew when to speak and when to stay silent. He knew how to blend in, how to disappear when needed.
By the time he was seven, Onyx was no longer just a lost child-he was a survivor.
(Ages 7-11)
At seven, Onyx's fate changed forever.
One day, he witnessed a Huntsman battling a pack of Grimm. The Huntsman was Qrow Branwen-a man feared and respected across the kingdoms.
Onyx watched the fight unfold with fascination, analyzing every movement, every strike. However, in his distraction, he failed to notice a young Beowolf creeping up behind him.
Before he could react, it lunged.
Instinct took over. Onyx grabbed a rusted dagger from his belt and plunged it into the Beowolf's throat.
By the time Qrow turned around, the boy had already killed the creature.
Qrow was shocked-not just that a child had survived an encounter with a Grimm, but that he had done so without hesitation. There was something different about Onyx, something he couldn't ignore.
That day, Qrow made a decision-he would train Onyx.
For the next four years, Qrow became Onyx's mentor, protector, and father figure. He taught Onyx everything he knew-combat, survival, strategy, and even how to navigate the complexities of people and the world.
Their bond grew strong. Qrow, despite his usual aloofness, came to see Onyx as the son he never had. Onyx, in turn, saw Qrow as the closest thing he had to family.
(Ages 9-10)
One fateful night, Onyx and Qrow encountered a Nuckelavee, a terrifying, near-unkillable Grimm. The battle was brutal, and despite their combined strength, the creature proved too powerful.
Then, it impaled Qrow.
Something inside Onyx snapped. His sclera turned black, his pupils slitted, and his amethyst-colored irises glowed. Power surged through him as he summoned his Dragon Blaster for the first time, obliterating the Nuckelavee in a single devastating shot.
Qrow, though wounded, immediately recognized the power-something eerily similar to Silver Eyes, but darker. This event marked the awakening of Onyx's Amethyst Eyes, a power that would later allow him to summon and control Grimm, as well as manifest devastating Grimm-based attacks.
(Age 11)
By the time Onyx was eleven, something became clear-Qrow had nothing left to teach him. Onyx had already surpassed expectations, proving himself stronger, faster, and more tactical than most seasoned warriors.
That was when Onyx made his second life-changing decision.
He told Qrow he was leaving.
Qrow protested fiercely-Onyx was still a child, and Remnant was too dangerous. But Onyx refused to back down. He had been surviving alone since he was five. He would continue to do so.
"You always said you'd let me make my own choices," Onyx reminded him.
In the end, Qrow relented, though reluctantly. "If you ever need me, you know where to find me, kid."
With that, Onyx left.
(Ages 11-16)
Four months into his travels, Onyx's life changed again.
While passing a river, he noticed a basket floating downstream. Something about it made him pause. Moving swiftly, he waded into the water and pulled the basket to shore.
Inside was a 5-month-old baby girl with Silver Eyes.
For the first time in his life, Onyx felt something deeper than survival-a connection, a responsibility.
She was alone. Just like he had been.
He couldn't leave her.
Instead, he picked her up and whispered, "...Hemera,"
He named her Hemera. (Note: after the Greek goddess of the day-a fitting contrast to his own name, inspired by Nyx, the goddess of the night.)
Despite being only eleven, Onyx dedicated himself to raising Hemera. He fed her, protected her, and loved her as his own daughter.
When he informed Qrow, the older Huntsman was stunned.
"Kid, you're still a teenager, you can't take care of a child!"
But Qrow quickly realized something-Onyx was an incredible father.
He was patient, protective, and gentle in a way no one had ever seen before. Qrow, despite his initial doubts, became Hemera's grandfather figure, and she affectionately called him Grandpa Qrow.
For the next five years, Onyx traveled with Hemera, ensuring she had a life filled with warmth and love-something he himself had never known.
She became his light in the darkness.
His "Little Light."
(Age 16)
By the age of sixteen, Onyx's reputation had reached Ozpin's ears.
Aware of Onyx's extraordinary skills and abilities through Qrow's reports, Ozpin personally offered him a Huntsman license and a position as a professor at Beacon Academy-the youngest in history.
At first, Onyx was hesitant. He had spent his entire life wandering. Could he really stay in one place?
Qrow convinced him.
"This isn't just about you anymore, kid. Hemera deserves a home."
With that, Onyx accepted.
Now, he balances teaching, fighting, and fatherhood, all while keeping an ever-watchful eye on the forces threatening Remnant.
Personality & Values
Stoic & Tactical - Onyx is highly analytical, rarely showing emotion in battle. He approaches situations with cold logic and precision.
Burdened but Kind-Hearted - Though he appears distant, Onyx is deeply compassionate toward those he cares about, especially Hemera and orphaned children.
Strong Moral Code - He refuses to harm those who do not deserve it and holds deep respect for second chances, but he does not tolerate true evil.
Compassion for Criminals Who Seek Redemption - Onyx believes that not all criminals are beyond redemption. If someone genuinely seeks to change, he will help them reform-but if they refuse, he has no mercy.
