Chapter 6 - Buddy, ugh, brother Shao, wanna team up? (Info heavy)

The cold wind is piercing.

The world is in a state of desolation.

In fact, people from all walks of life are struggling.

Since August 11, 2013, the future direction of this world has gone completely off course.

What was once people's fantasy had turned into reality.

The world had welcomed unknown Invaders.

But these invaders were not the alien warships people had once imagined; they were colossal monsters that crawled out from a wormhole that suddenly appeared in the depths of the Pacific Ocean!

The first Kaiju was later named "Trespasser".

Before , people never would have believed that these massive creatures could withstand their technological weapons.

After its appearance, people realized how powerless their current technological weapons were against the Kaiju.

After Trespasser emerged in San Francisco, people poured endless ammunition into it for several hours, yet still failed to stop its progress. In the end, they had no choice but to use three nuclear bombs to destroy it. However, by that time, a once-thriving city had been reduced to ruins, and it became the graveyard of this colossal beast, Trespasser.

What terrified the world even more was that the attack by these Kaiju was not an isolated event. Six months later, a second attack came unexpectedly, followed by a third attack nearly four months later, and a fourth attack three months after that.

During these three attacks, people once again had to use their ultimate weapons to turn the tide. Despite heavy casualties and the destruction of more cities, these events allowed people to witness once again how powerless their technological weapons were when facing Kaiju! The radiation from the nuclear bombs could be minimized by various methods, but the toxicity of the monsters' blood, after seeping into the ground and evaporating, would turn the local area into a barren wasteland.

Under the pressure of these relentless crises, world governments could no longer sit idly by, nor could they continue to treat the Kaiju attacks as mere natural disasters. They completely abandoned their fantasies and began cooperating.

In 2014, the Pan Pacific Defence Corps (PPDC) was established, with its headquarters located in Hong Kong.

At the first PPDC summit, many scientists presented their proposals. Some suggested researching more reliable and targeted weapons, while others, at the behest of their financial backers, proposed constructing giant anti-Kaiju walls! There was even a proposal to create human-made Mechs to fight the invading creatures: the Jaeger Program. However, among the various proposals, this one was not a priority at the time.

This was because no one could estimate how long it would take to make the plan a success.

But the scientist who proposed this plan, Jasper Schoenfeld, did not give up. He approached one of the PPDC officials, Stacker Pentecost, who was interested in his plan, hoping he could invest the necessary funds into the project. After securing the investment and support, he also brought in his former student and disgraced lover, the renowned neuroscientist Caitlin Lightcap.

In just three months, Jasper and Caitlin's research team made astonishing progress, bringing the project incredibly close to success. In less than two months, the prototype of the first Jaeger, the Brawler Yukon, began testing. This rapid and seemingly miraculous progress led the previously skeptical governments to increase their investments in the project.

But, as always, things were not smooth sailing.

The first human-machine connection test failed, resulting in the death of the test pilot. The test showed that a single person's neurons could not bear the mental load of connecting and controlling the Jaeger. This cast a shadow over what had once been a promising project. Stacker Pentecost's enthusiasm also cooled with each setback. However, by this point, the investment he sunk into the project left him with no way out. He had no choice but to use his connections and resources to find more funding for Jasper and Caitlin.

And as if guided by fate, just 18 days later, Caitlin developed a neural bridge that allowed two pilots' brainwaves to synchronize.

Two months later, when another Kaiju attack occurred, Caitlin and her partner Sergio piloted the first prototype mech, Brawler Yukon, and for the first time, they managed to defeat a Kaiju using a Jaeger. This greatly lifted people's spirits, and the popularity of them skyrocketed around the world!

As the first successful project put into combat by the PPDC, the countries behind it took this opportunity to set the course.

Jaeger maintenance bases sprang up, military weapons and personnel from various countries moved in, and the world-famous Jaeger Academy began recruiting worldwide.

It seemed that everything was heading in the right direction.

At this moment, nearly eleven years had passed since the first Kaiju appeared.

In these eleven years, the changes in the world had surpassed anything anyone could have imagined ten years ago. Nearly all global resources had been poured into the Jaeger Program, a gold-consuming behemoth. If not for the many branches of this project, with technological achievements that could be applied to other fields, the world's funds would likely have already been overwhelmed by the rapid production of Jaegers. Even so, the Jaeger Program had placed an unbearable strain on national finances.

As is well known, when a country invests too much into warfare, it inevitably impacts the social investments. While the situation of many countries was not completely chaotic, besides a few nations and cities, many places were in disarray. There were even bizarre Kaiju Cultist groups spreading their influence. They believed that the Kaiju were a punishment for humanity, and that humans should not resist, but instead accept it with reverence and humility.

Of course, with ten years of buildup and success, there were also many who worshiped the Jaegers. Among them, fanatics stood in stark opposition to the Kaiju Cultist groups, viewing the mechs as guardian deities. They regarded the seven legendary Jaeger pilots and creators as the seven great Mechanical Deities!

Caitlin Lightcap, who created the human-machine neural synchronization system and gave the mechs a consciousness.

Jasper Schoenfeld, the Father of Mechs, who pushed forward and created the first mech.

The genius Serizawa, who has the power to categorize and name the Kaiju.

The eccentric Newton Geiszler and Hermann Gottlieb, who knew everything about each Kaiju, researched their weaknesses and used mathematical models to predict their attack frequencies, and the number of Kaiju.

The only known individual who, after his partner was severely injured and lost consciousness, single-handedly piloted the Mark-1 Coyote Tango Jaeger to defeat a Kaiju: Stacker Pentecost, PPDC's Marshal and Jaeger Academy instructor.

And finally, the mysterious Luke Field, who appeared three years ago, revived Shao Industries with his own strength, and became a global giant in the mecha industry.

Liwen Shao, the head of Shao Industries, looked out at the desolate scene outside his window and couldn't help but recall the first time he met Luke Field. That young man, so surprisingly youthful, and the casual greeting: "Buddy, ugh, brother Shao, want to team up?"—it was a moment that stayed with him. Of course, what made the memory even more vivid was when, without hesitation, he set aside all his doubts and decided to cooperate with Luke Field. Standing next to him at that time was a two-meter-tall, miniature mechanical Kaiju.

It was the first Kaiju, Trespasser, that anyone could instantly recognize!

It looked to be made from a pile of scrap metal, it was unpainted and a little ugly, but it was incredibly agile and obedient!
