Chapter 1 - chapter 1

A persistent thirst, frequent trips to the restroom, unexplained weight loss. Sophia had noticed the changes but didn't understand their gravity. By the time Mr Ken walter, her father was diagnosed with diabetes, complications had already set in. The family scraped together their savings for his medication and hospital visits, but it was never enough.

The day he died was etched in not only Sophia but in everyone's memory like a scar.

---

Sophia's eyes fluttered open to the sound of her mother's muffled sobs. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes, her heart racing as she sat up in bed. The room was dimly lit, the only light coming from the faint moonlight streaming through the window.

She threw off the covers and rushed to the living room, where she found her mother, Madison, cradling her father's lifeless body. Sophia's breath caught in her throat as she took in the scene. Her father's eyes were closed, his face pale and serene. A faint scent of medication and sweat hung in the air.

"Mom..." Sophia's voice trembled as she approached her mother.

Madison looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and puffy. "Sophia, your father...he's gone."

Sophia felt a wave of grief wash over her. She had known her father was ill, but she had never expected him to leave so soon. The man who had taught her to dream, to study hard, and to never give up was gone.

As the reality of the situation sank in, Sophia felt a lump form in her throat. She tried to speak, but the words caught in her throat. She looked around the room, taking in the familiar surroundings. The worn couch, the old TV, the family photos on the wall – everything seemed surreal, as if she was viewing it all through a foggy lens.

Madison pulled Sophia into a tight hug, holding her close as they both cried. The twins, Caleb and Olivia, stirred in their room, awakened by the commotion. They rubbed the sleep from their eyes and stumbled into the living room, looking confused and scared.

"Mommy, what's wrong?" Caleb asked, his voice trembling.

Madison took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "Your father...he's gone to heaven, sweetie."

Olivia looked up at Sophia, her eyes wide with fear. "Sophy, is Daddy coming back?"

Sophia hesitated, unsure of how to respond. She looked at her mother, who shook her head slightly.

"No, sweetie," Sophia said gently. "Daddy won't be coming back."

The room fell silent, the only sound the quiet sobbing of Madison and the twins' sniffles. Sophia felt a weight settle on her shoulders, a sense of responsibility she had never felt before.

As the night wore on, the family received visitors, neighbors and friends who came to pay their respects. Sophia watched as her mother struggled to keep up a brave face, smiling and thanking people for their condolences. But as the visitors left and the house grew quiet, Sophia saw the cracks in her mother's facade. Madison's eyes were sunken, her skin pale and drawn. Sophia knew that her mother was hurting, and she felt a surge of determination to help her family through this difficult time.

The next few days passed in a blur. Sophia helped her mother with the funeral arrangements, watching as Madison struggled to make decisions about the service, the casket, and the burial plot. Sophia felt a sense of pride and purpose as she helped her mother navigate the complex and emotional process.

On the day of the funeral, Sophia stood beside her mother, her eyes fixed on the casket as it was lowered into the ground. The sun beat down on them, casting a golden glow over the mourners. Sophia felt a sense of peace wash over her as she listened to the eulogies, the words of praise and remembrance for her father.

As the service came to a close, Sophia felt a sense of resolve. She knew that her family would face difficult times ahead, but she was determined to help them through it. She looked at her mother, who smiled weakly at her, and felt a surge of love and protectiveness.

The days that followed were hard. Sophia's mother struggled to cope with the loss of her husband, and Sophia found herself taking on more and more responsibilities. She helped with the household chores, cooked meals, and cared for her younger siblings. But despite the challenges, Sophia felt a sense of purpose and determination. She knew that she had to be strong for her family, and she was determined to do whatever it took to help them through this difficult time.

As the days turned into weeks, Sophia's family began to adjust to their new reality. Madison started to smile again, and the twins began to laugh and play like they used to. Sophia watched over them all, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. She knew that she had helped her family through a difficult time, and she felt grateful for the opportunity to do so.

But as the weeks passed, Sophia began to realize that her family's struggles were far from over. Her mother's income from her tailoring business was barely enough to cover their basic needs, and Sophia knew that she would have to find a way to contribute.

She started by taking on small jobs in the neighborhood, such as babysitting and running errands for the elderly and selling fruits in the neighborhood . She also helped her mother with her tailoring business, learning how to sew and mend clothes.
