Chapter 1 - Lonely classroom

Lucy Lee sat in the classroom, the sunlight streaming through the window and casting a golden halo. Her gaze swept across the classroom and lingered on the warm scene outside-parents with their child. The child giggled in the father's arms, while the mother gently stroked the child's face. In that moment, an inexplicable loneliness surged within Lucy's heart, as if all this warmth had nothing to do with her.

"Mia Lee, what are you thinking?" A student's voice pulled her back to reality. She smiled faintly, masking the turmoil inside, and continued to explain the lesson. Yet her thoughts remained unsettled. She tried to channel her emotions into her passion for teaching, but whenever she glimpsed that warm scene outside, a sharp ache would surge, as relentless as a rising tide.

During the break, Lucy walked out of the classroom, heading toward the teacher's lounge. Her mind still lingered on the smiles of that couple. She accidentally overheard a conversation from the next classroom, where two young teachers were discussing family and children.

"I think family is the most important. No matter how busy we are, we should always spend time with our kids at night," one female teacher said, her tone resolute.

"Yeah, I agree. But sometimes work is so overwhelming that I just want to fly back home," the other teacher replied with a hint of helplessness, before laughing lightly, "But the warmth of family can heal everything."

Lucy sighed softly, the longing within her stirred once more. She thought of her own daughter, Mia. After losing her father, the intense yearning for family in her young heart was undeniable. Lucy buried herself in her work, trying her best to provide a normal life for Mia, but she could never fill the emptiness in her daughter's heart.

On the way home, Lucy's mood grew heavier. She couldn't stop thinking-had Mia's performance at school been affected? Would her painting competition reflect her longing for her father? Every time she thought of these things, her heart felt as if a heavy stone were pressing down on it, making it hard to breathe.

When she returned home, Mia was busy drawing. On her paper was a picture of a happy family, with smiling parents and children. Lucy stood at the door, faintly hearing her daughter whisper, "I wish we had a complete family..." The innocent words pierced her heart. She softly walked into the room, trying to conceal the complicated emotions inside.

"Mi Mi, your drawing is wonderful!" Lucy smiled as she walked over to praise her daughter.

"Thank you, Mom," Mia looked up, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Mom, this is our family of three!"

Lucy's heart sank, and her smile gradually faded. She wanted to respond but found herself at a loss for words. Her inner turmoil battled with her sense of reason-should she tell her daughter that the beautiful past was no longer there?

"Let's go have dinner," Lucy finally said, her voice light as a drifting autumn leaf.

At dinner, Mia chattered excitedly about school, but Lucy struggled to listen. Her mind kept drifting to that drawing. A voice in her head suddenly asked: if she couldn't provide her child with a complete family, what could she offer her?

"Mom, tomorrow the school is having a family event. Can you come?" Mia suddenly asked, her eyes shining with hope.

"I... I'll try my best to come," Lucy hesitated, but the anxiety in her heart was palpable. She knew she could make as many promises as she liked, but couldn't guarantee she would fulfill them.

"Great! I'm looking forward to seeing you at the event," Mia said with a bright smile, but Lucy's heart felt like a storm cloud was hanging over it.

Late that night, Lucy lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Her mind replayed the image of that couple, her daughter's expectations, and the deep longing inside her. She thought of Ethan Zhang-the man she had met by chance at the café, whose eyes seemed to glimmer with a loneliness similar to hers.

"Can I really find love again?" Lucy silently asked herself. She knew her wounds hadn't healed, and stepping into another relationship might lead to deeper hurt.

The next day in class, Lucy's mood was still heavy. She tried to focus on teaching, but every time she saw the children's happy faces, waves of emotion rose within her. After class, she entered the lounge, only to bump into Ethan. Their eyes met, and the air was thick with an unspoken tension.

"Good morning, Ms. Lee," Ethan greeted her with a warm smile.

"Good morning," Lucy responded, feeling inexplicably nervous. The silence between them stretched, pulling them closer yet keeping them at a distance.

"I heard your daughter won an award at the school's art exhibition yesterday. That's fantastic!" Ethan broke the silence.

"Thank you. She worked hard," Lucy's voice carried a hint of pride, but there was also a trace of lingering worry.

"I think children's drawings always convey so much emotion-family warmth, parental presence..." Ethan's words seemed to carry a deeper meaning.

"Yes, family is indeed very important," Lucy nodded slightly, but unease stirred within her. She wanted to respond, yet felt that every word could be misunderstood.

"What do you think? What is the definition of family?" Ethan's gaze settled on Lucy, as if searching the depths of her soul.

"Uh... I think family is about being together, supporting one another," Lucy tried to remain calm, but anxiety bubbled up inside her.

"Sometimes, family can also be the warmth we long for in our hearts," Ethan's voice was soft, almost as if he were hinting at something.

Lucy's heart skipped a beat, realizing that his words might carry a deeper meaning. She wanted to ask more but was stifled by a rising fear. She knew that Ethan's secret could become a new crisis in her and Mia's lives.

The afternoon sun filtered through the classroom windows, but Lucy's heart remained clouded, unable to find peace. She was torn between her attraction to Ethan and her fear of the unknown. She yearned for love but feared the pain it might bring.

After school, Lucy took Mia home. On the way, Mia excitedly shared stories from school, while Lucy's mind was elsewhere. Ethan's words echoed in her head, as if foretelling some change in her future.

"Mom, I've drawn a new picture. Can I show you tonight?" Mia suddenly asked, her face lit up with anticipation.

"Of course, Mia," Lucy forced a smile, but the weight in her heart only grew heavier. She knew she couldn't provide her daughter with the complete family she longed for.

When they got home, Mia eagerly showed off her new drawing. It was of a warm family, parents and children sitting together, all smiling happily. Lucy looked at the picture, feeling a swirl of complex emotions. The scene in the drawing seemed to mock her helplessness, making it hard for her to breathe.

"Mia, this drawing is beautiful," Lucy tried to keep her voice light.

"Mom, this is my ideal family," Mia's eyes sparkled with hope, but it only made Lucy's heart feel heavier.

"I'll work hard to make our family better," Lucy silently promised herself, though the commitment felt more difficult than she had anticipated.

In that moment, Lucy realized that deep down, she still longed for the completeness of a family, still yearned for true love. She made a silent vow in her heart to face whatever came her way.

However, the road ahead remained uncertain. Lucy wasn't sure if she could withstand the coming storm, nor what shadow Ethan's secret would cast over her life. All she could do was walk this unpredictable path, in search of the warmth and belonging she had lost.
