Chapter 8 - 8 The Shadow System Awaits

As Thomas approached his tenth birthday, a whirlwind of excitement and anxiety swirled within him. This was the day he had long anticipated—the day he would officially become a full member of the Black Hand Clan. Yet, beneath the excitement lay a gnawing worry that kept him restless at night. Ren had been in hibernation for nearly three years, and as his awakening drew near, Thomas felt an overwhelming uncertainty. What if Ren didn't return? What would that mean for him? The thought sent shivers down his spine.

"Are you ready for your big day, little warrior?" Sarge asked one afternoon as they prepared for the celebrations. The warmth in his grandfather's voice was comforting, yet Thomas could see concern etched on his face.

"I guess," Thomas replied, his excitement tempered by anxiety. "What if Ren doesn't come back?" he thought to himself.

Sarge knelt down to meet Thomas's gaze, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "You have the strength of our clan behind you."

Despite his grandfather's comforting words, Thomas felt restless. The shadows around him seemed to pulse with energy, swirling in his periphery. He spent the days leading up to his birthday wandering the valley, hoping to catch a glimpse of the familiar presence he had come to rely on, but the days passed without any sign of Ren, and his anxiety only grew.

On the night before his birthday, Thomas lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, feeling the shadows flicker and dance. "Ren, please come back," he whispered into the darkness, a sense of loneliness creeping in. "I need you."

As if responding to his plea, the shadows around him began to shift, coiling and swirling until they formed a protective barrier that encased him like a cocoon. Thomas felt a rush of energy as the darkness enveloped him, cocooning him in warmth and safety.

For three days, Thomas remained within this protective embrace, losing consciousness as the shadows worked their magic. He felt safe, cocooned in the darkness, even as the world outside faded away.

When he finally awoke, the first thing he noticed was the stillness. The barrier had dissipated, and he found himself lying on the soft grass near the river. Blinking against the sunlight, he pushed himself up, a mix of confusion and exhilaration coursing through him.

"What just happened?" he murmured, brushing the grass clippings from his clothes. As he stood, he noticed something extraordinary—a visual notification appeared in his line of sight, glowing faintly.

"What?!" Thomas exclaimed, turning in circles, searching for anyone who might have seen it. But he was alone, and the notification shimmered in his vision, persistent and clear.

His heart raced as the words faded, replaced by a series of icons and information panels that began to materialize in the air around him. He could see various stats and symbols, most of which were unfamiliar.

Just then, he heard footsteps approaching. His grandfather Sarge appeared, a broad smile on his face. "Ah, there you are! We were starting to worry!"

"Grandpa! I just woke up, and I think I have a—" Thomas began, but Sarge held up a hand to interrupt him.

"First, let's get you ready for the registration. It's time for you to be tested on your attributes and system level."

"Tested?" Thomas echoed, his heart racing. What if the test revealed something unexpected? He felt a mix of dread and anticipation.

"Yes! The clan has a special orb for testing systems," Sarge explained, leading Thomas back toward the village. "It will help us understand your capabilities and what you can do with your new abilities."

As they walked, Thomas's mind raced with possibilities. What abilities would he unlock? What did the mysterious shadows mean? He felt a surge of energy, eager to embrace whatever awaited him.

When they arrived at the clan hall, a large gathering of clan members awaited them. The atmosphere was charged with excitement, and the air was thick with anticipation. Sarge guided Thomas to the center of the hall, where a shimmering orb sat on a pedestal, glowing with a mesmerizing light.

"Alright, Thomas, step forward," Sarge instructed, gesturing for him to approach the orb.

Thomas felt a flutter in his stomach as he approached the orb, its light pulsing gently. Taking a deep breath, he placed his hands on its surface. The moment he made contact, the orb erupted with energy, enveloping him in a warm glow.

[Analyzing Attributes…]

The orb hummed intensely, and Thomas felt a rush of magic coursing through him. The shadows fluttered around him, responding to the energy of the orb as it absorbed his essence.

Suddenly, the orb emitted a blinding flash, and Thomas stumbled back as it released a wave of energy that swept through the hall. Clan members gasped, and Thomas felt a deep connection to the shadows as they swirled around him, embracing him like old friends.

The orb flickered and dimmed, settling back into its original glow. A palpable silence filled the hall, and Thomas's heart raced. The results were cryptic, but the feeling of power resonated within him.

Sarge stepped forward, his expression a mixture of pride and confusion. "Mysterious… It seems there is something unique about your system, but I don't quite understand it. We'll need to monitor your development closely."

Thomas nodded, feeling a mix of pride and concern. He had obtained something extraordinary, but he also sensed that the shadows held secrets he had yet to uncover.

As the clan members began to celebrate, Thomas felt a sense of belonging swell within him. He had obtained the Shadow System, and though Ren was still in hibernation, he felt a newfound connection to the shadows. The next chapter of his life was unfolding, and he was ready to embrace it fully.

His journey was just beginning, and he was determined to unlock the mysteries of the shadows that now intertwined with his destiny. The path ahead was filled with promise, and Thomas felt ready to face whatever challenges lay in wait.
