Chapter 1 - Weight Of Golden Lotus

AVA'S POV:

The heat of the kitchen enveloped me like a warm blanket, but today, it smothered rather than comforted. I wiped the back of my hand across my forehead, hoping to clear the humidity that clung to my skin.

The rich scents of garlic and ginger normally filled me with pride, but today, they felt oppressive—a reminder of the burden I was carrying. My heart ached as I stirred the simmering broth, knowing that the beloved Golden Lotus was teetering on the brink of collapse. With each chop of the vegetables, memories flickered like ghostly images in my mind. I could almost hear my mother's laughter echoing through the kitchen, guiding me as I cooked, just as she always had. It should feel like home here—the sounds of sizzling woks and clattering utensils enveloping me in warmth.

But today, it feels different. Tense. Fragile. As if the very walls could crumble under the weight of my father's debts. "Service!" I called, my voice strained but steady. A young waiter rushed past, deftly balancing a tray stacked high with steaming plates. I forced a smile, though my heart felt heavy.

How can I pretend everything is fine when the very foundation of my family's legacy is crumbling? My father's carelessness had left us drowning in debt. I recalled the numerous evenings we spent at the restaurant, the vibrant energy radiating from each table filled with diners. Now, those memories felt like cruel echoes. I pictured my father sitting at the restaurant's old wooden table, lost in thought, the sparkle in his eyes replaced by worry.

He had poured his heart and soul into the Golden Lotus, and now it felt as if all of that was slipping through my fingers. As I stirred the broth, I couldn't shake the anxiety knotting my stomach. What will happen if the auction goes through? What if we lose everything? These questions gnawed at me, suffocating any flicker of hope.

"Are you okay?" Lily, my best friend and sous chef, asked gently as she meticulously sliced green onions beside me. Her keen eyes assessed my expression, and I appreciated her concern more than I could express.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I replied, perhaps a touch too quickly. I forced another smile, this time stronger. "Just focusing on the special for tonight." "Uh-huh." She folded her arms, an eyebrow raised. "You look about as fine as a wilted herb." I sighed, the lightness of her banter bringing momentary relief. "Really, I'm just… thinking about everything."

Lily stepped closer, the warm camaraderie of our friendship radiating as we shared this sanctuary of chaos. "You know I'm here for you, right? Let's step outside for a moment. You could use a break." I hesitated, torn between the responsibilities of the kitchen and the impending conversation that felt like peeling back an old wound. But the concern in her eyes urged me on.

"Okay. A quick break," I relented, wiping my hands on my apron as we stepped out into the small courtyard behind the restaurant. The air was cooler outside, and the faint sounds of the city buzzed around us. I leaned against the brick wall, grateful for a momentary escape from the heat and the weight of responsibility.

"Talk to me, Ava," Lily prompted, her expression softening. "What's really going on in that head of yours?" A sigh escaped my lips before I could restrain it. "I'm just overwhelmed, you know? The auction is next week, and I can't shake the feeling that everything is slipping away from us. I don't want to lose Golden Lotus. It feels like losing my family." "I get it," Lily said, her voice firm with conviction. "But you're not alone in this. You've built something incredible here.

If anyone can save it, it's you." Her words warmed me, and I wanted so desperately to believe her. But I couldn't shake the gnawing self-doubt lingering beneath the surface. "What if it's not enough? What if I can't protect it?" "You keep saying what if," she replied, lifting her chin, those dark eyes of hers steady and fierce. "What if you succeed? What if you fight like hell and prove them all wrong?"

Her determination spurred a flicker of hope within me, but the shadows lingered—dark reminders of all I could lose. "I just wish things were different," I admitted. "I wish my dad hadn't made those choices." "I know." Lily's tone softened as she stepped closer. "But you have the heart of a fighter. We're going to figure this out together. You can't do this alone." I felt the warmth of her words seep into my bones, and I realized that perhaps I didn't have to bear the burden alone. "Thanks, Lily," I murmured, swallowing the lump in my throat.

"I don't know what I'd do without you." We shared a moment of silence, camaraderie grounding me in the chaos of my reality. The sun dipped low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the courtyard as I drew strength from her unwavering support. As we stood there, I felt the familiar comfort of our bond—the shared determination to fight for Golden Lotus. Maybe, just maybe, I can ignite a spark of hope in the darkness.

And perhaps together, we could bring the light back to the restaurant that meant everything to us. "Let's get back inside," Lily said, nudging my shoulder playfully. "We've got work to do before the dinner rush hits." I nodded, revitalized by our conversation as we headed back through the kitchen door, the scent of the spices enveloping me once more. "Do you think we'll make it?" I asked, glancing sideways at her. With a playful grin, she replied, "With you at the helm? Absolutely." And in that moment, I felt a flicker of determination ignite within me—a fire I was prepared to stoke. Whatever was to come, I would face it head-on, surrounded by the people who loved me and the legacy that mattered most. ---
