Chapter 13 - Chapter 12: The Unseen Battle

The morning sun shone over the misty valley as Raviel, Vaelen, and Liora sat in their camp, surrounded by towering trees. Despite the peace of the forest, each of them could feel the tension in the air, a weight that hung over them since the council meeting and the promise of what was to come. The alliance was fragile, the prophecy unsettling, and with each passing day, the shadow of the unknown grew larger.

Liora, the werewolf, had always been quick to act, to fight when needed. But today, she found herself lost in thought, staring into the flickering flames of the campfire. Her mind was heavy with the whispers of the prophecy—the idea that she might have to play a role in something much larger than herself. The night before, she had struggled to sleep, plagued by nightmares of her mother's death. It felt as if she were once again trapped in that moment, unable to protect her. The pain of losing her mother had never truly gone away. She had refused the healer's offer to use magic to ease her grief, rejecting anything that could erase the rawness of it. She wanted to feel it—wanted to carry it with her as a reminder that her past was her strength, not a burden. But today, that grief seemed too much to bear.

Vaelen, the white tiger, paced back and forth. His mind was far from the peaceful forest around him. His thoughts were filled with Veyra—his childhood friend, the one person he had ever truly trusted. He had been terrified of failing her, of not being there when she needed him most. The weight of his duties as the next in line for the tiger clan was beginning to settle in. He couldn't help but feel a sense of dread every time he thought about the future—about how he would protect Veyra and his people.

The thought of losing her, of not being strong enough to defend her from whatever threat lay ahead, gnawed at him. He had always relied on his strength, but lately, he felt as if his strength wasn't enough. And if he couldn't protect her… then what was he?

Raviel, the golden eagle, stood tall, his gaze fixed on the horizon. Despite the uncertainty surrounding him, he remained calm—more so than the others. But beneath the calm exterior, his thoughts were a storm. He knew the alliance was crucial, but there was an unsettling sense of distrust lingering. The way Liora had looked at the queen, the way Vaelen had been distant—he could sense the rift growing between them. Trust was a delicate thing, and though they were bound by necessity, he wasn't sure how much they could rely on each other when it truly mattered. He, too, felt the weight of the prophecy—its words echoing in his mind. "The eagle will rise, but the serpent will fall." What did it mean? And why did it feel like the serpent was already waiting in the shadows?

As the day wore on, their moods only grew heavier. The tension was palpable, the air thick with unsaid words. Liora and Vaelen barely exchanged glances, both lost in their own thoughts. Raviel, ever the observer, couldn't help but notice the change in them. It was as if the prophecy was a silent, invisible force that had seeped into their bones, making them question everything they thought they knew.

And then, just as the silence became unbearable, a rustling from the trees snapped them back to reality. They all stood, instincts kicking in, ready for whatever danger might approach. But as they turned to face the sound, there was nothing there. Just the wind whispering through the leaves.

"Nothing," Vaelen muttered, lowering his guard.

Raviel's gaze lingered on the trees for a moment longer before he nodded. "Nothing," he echoed. But something didn't sit right with him. The feeling of being watched, of something lurking just beyond their reach, was growing stronger. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

"Are we ready to move on?" Liora asked, her voice breaking the silence.

They all nodded, but none of them spoke of the unease that had settled in their hearts. They couldn't ignore it. The world was shifting, and they were all caught in the storm, whether they were ready or not.

With a final glance at their camp, the three of them set off, their path uncertain, their thoughts clouded by the same question that lingered in the air: What lay ahead, and could they truly face it together?
