Chapter 1 - the awakening

The world as they knew it had changed forever. It was the year 2073 when Earth was first contacted by the aliens—a race called the Xorth, ruthless invaders with the intent to conquer and enslave all of humanity. The war that followed was like nothing anyone had ever imagined, and mankind was losing. For every victory, the Xorth countered with a brutal, calculated strike, pushing the human race to the brink of extinction.

But then came the systems.

A gift—or perhaps a curse—bestowed upon humans by an unknown cosmic force. A supernatural power that awakened within select individuals, giving them the ability to wield abilities beyond human comprehension. These individuals became humanity's last hope. The systems granted powers tied to the elements, to mythical creatures, to forgotten gods. And with them, humanity fought back.

Yet, even with these newfound powers, the war was far from over.

Among the chosen few who received a system were the twins, Ash and Kael, two boys whose bloodlines carried a legacy none of them understood, until the day the systems chose them. A hybrid of unimaginable power coursed through their veins—powers that they had barely begun to comprehend.

It was a typical day in the capital city of Vantheon, the heart of the Supernatural Academy, an institution designed to train and hone the abilities of those with the systems. Every system-holder came here, from every corner of the Earth, to be educated, to be tested, and ultimately to fight back against the Xorth and other godly beings who threatened their world.

Ash ran his fingers through his dark, untamed hair as he glanced at the towering gates of the academy. His golden amber eyes flickered to the symbol etched into the metal—a phoenix wrapped around a sword, flames licking at its wings. He felt a strange warmth at the sight of it. His system, the Phoenix System, was supposed to make him a rebirth, an eternal flame, but the truth was that Ash wasn't sure who or what he was anymore. The vampire side of him fought against his inner fire, urging him to embrace darkness, to embrace immortality, to succumb to his bloodlust.

"You okay, Ash?" Kael's voice cut through his thoughts, his twin brother's gruff tone unmistakable.

Ash turned to find Kael standing next to him, his towering frame casting a long shadow in the sunlight. His bright red eyes, more like a dragon's, glowed with an inner fire that matched the blue of the sky above them. He was more beast than man, a force of nature that could shift between wolf and dragon forms, powers that made him as dangerous as he was unpredictable. The werewolf side of him urged him to fight, to dominate, while the dragon in him longed to soar free, to burn away anything that threatened them.

Ash shook his head. "Just thinking about the trials. They're going to throw us into some weird situation here, aren't they?"

Kael smirked, his sharp teeth glinting in the light. "I've been through worse. Let's see what they've got."

Ash nodded, though uncertainty lingered in his chest. He wasn't sure whether he was ready to face whatever the academy had in store for them. He didn't even know if he understood his own powers yet, let alone how they would fit in this world of gods, beasts, and aliens.

Their footsteps echoed across the grand courtyard as they entered the academy grounds. Students—many with powerful, shining auras—milled around, conversing in hushed tones, their eyes occasionally flicking toward the twins. Ash and Kael were used to being the center of attention, though it was never for the right reasons. People gawked at them for the unusual mix of powers they possessed: Ash, half-vampire, half-phoenix; Kael, half-werewolf, half-dragon. A combination that no one had ever seen before.

"Look, it's the hybrid twins." A student muttered from the sidelines, drawing the attention of others. Ash's lip curled slightly at the words, his vampire side quick to rise, but Kael's hand on his shoulder was enough to calm him.

"Let them talk. We don't have time for their gossip," Kael said with a grin. "Besides, we're here to kick ass."

Ash couldn't help but smile at his twin's relentless optimism. He often felt as though Kael's carefree nature kept him grounded, especially when the world felt too heavy.

As they walked further into the academy, they passed a group of girls gathered around a fountain, whispering excitedly among themselves. Ash wasn't sure if it was the aura of his phoenix blood or the darker allure of his vampire side, but he could feel their gazes on him. The mix of curiosity, admiration, and something more dangerous. His vampire instincts told him to stay aloof, but his phoenix side warmed with the attention, a strange combination of both worlds.

Kael, ever the more outgoing of the two, winked at one of the girls as they passed. "Don't get too close, princess," he said with a teasing tone, making her blush furiously.

Ash rolled his eyes. "I swear, you'll be the death of me one day, Kael."

The twins were greeted by a teacher, an older man with an unassuming presence but an aura of immense power—the Headmaster of the academy, Professor Lorian.

"Welcome, Ash, Kael. I trust your journey was uneventful?" His voice was smooth, yet carried the weight of knowledge, as if he had seen everything the world had to offer. His eyes were keen and sharp, but he focused on the twins as though he knew them far better than they knew themselves.

"Uneventful for him," Kael grinned, nudging Ash lightly. "But you should've seen him freak out when we almost missed the train."

Ash glared at his twin, but Kael only laughed.

"Let's get you settled. We have much to discuss."

Later that day, the twins stood in the grand hall of the academy's orientation chamber, flanked by other new students. Each one held a unique aura, each one representing a different type of system. But Ash and Kael stood out. They always did.

"You are here," Professor Lorian began, his voice booming across the room, "because you were chosen. Chosen by the systems to wield powers that will shape the fate of humanity. Your trials begin now. You will face tests of strength, intellect, and heart. But be warned—this academy is not just a school. It is a battleground."

Ash felt the weight of those words. He wasn't just here to learn. He wasn't just here to fight. He was here to uncover something—something buried deep within his heritage. The truth of his bloodline. The truth of the hybrid systems that ran through his veins.

Kael's eyes were already scanning the other students, sizing them up. He was always the more social twin, never one to back down from a challenge. Ash, on the other hand, could feel the weight of their legacy pressing on him. They weren't just fighting for survival—they were fighting to uncover a truth that might change everything.

"The path you walk is not an easy one," Professor Lorian continued, "but I have no doubt that you will be tested beyond what you can imagine. And remember, you are not alone. Trust your companions—your allies—because this war is not only against the Xorth. There are those who would see you fall before the true enemy makes itself known."

As the class broke and students began to gather in their groups, Ash and Kael exchanged a glance. The journey ahead of them wasn't just about fighting for humanity's survival. It was about discovering who they truly were—and the dark secrets of their past.
