The war was almost over. The dawn of June 6, 1944 was a carnage, but it had had the desired effects. The landing in Sicily and the Corkscrew operation in Pantelleria had also already taken place, but the campaign had had a disappointing outcome for the Allies, who had not managed to prevent the retreat of the general's Italian-German troops Hans-Valentin Hube.
The Americans and English had taken possession of Sicily and were advancing into Italy, while HMS Ajax patrolled the sea around the island of Crete and Greece. The Allied air forces had such a destructive force that they were able to pin down and destroy their opponents in their own buildings, but the Germans were more committed to retreating and collecting the last pieces rather than counterattacking. As the war dragged on in its final aftermath, patrol missions were patrols of empty, therefore uninteresting, bases which it was useless to bomb. "Golden bridges to the fleeing enemy."
Author's note:
This prologue is just to show the time and setting of my story. Everything else does not want and does not necessarily have to respect any historical truth. Even the physical and political geography of the island of Goiter does not necessarily correspond to reality. The HMS Ajax ship actually existed and patrolled the waters of the Libyan Sea, but the deployment of the ship is not the true story. However, except where I didn't necessarily have to bend them to the story for "script" needs, I tried to respect the facts.
