I could only watch the screen in anticipation as the two heroes danced around each other on the television. GearSmith, clad in his iconic suit, was attempting to defeat a newer superhero—his own son, who, as I learned from observing the fight, had been brought back from the dead and was not pleased with his father's actions.
With yesterday's report of 19 missing individuals suddenly reappearing with superpowers, along with evidence of inhumane experiments being conducted at one of my father's larger labs, I had no doubt that it was most likely my childhood hero.
What I couldn't understand is why he would admit to committing such horrible acts. The new hero didn't hijack the TV screen; GearSmith did, announcing his intention to empower the people of the world to achieve the impossible. Then he began fighting the new hero, whom I've decided to call Fox Masks. Why would he expose his crimes for the world to see?
A shout snapped me out of my thoughts as I began to tune back into the world around me. I focused on the TV screen and saw my father's face. He used the GearSmith cannon to fire a blast of energy at the fox-masked hero, who used his baseball bat to reflect it back at my father.
"Sure you are supposed to be here? Maybe you should just go home."
"I know what you're doing. Best you stop now! I've already removed your codes. your mind fuckery will help you here." On the screen, the fox masked hero lit his bat on fire and swung down, unleashing a massive wave of flames at the monster. "The others are angry with you. Even if you kill me, you will never escape them."
The world started getting muffled as I realized that the words my father and brother have been saying mean there are 19 super-powered people who want to kill my dad and probably me by proximity. Now that I have the context that my dad is the one behind the mask, I recognize some of the projects he is talking about because I personally worked on some of them, and my father is never afraid to boast about my work.
And all of them have been spotted in Hurricane City.
19 superpowered people have been seen in my hometown.
All Them Definitely will Kill Me
"Fuck," I mutter, ignoring the TV and getting up. The coffee had been nice, but I needed to (get as far away as I could) go home fast and couldn't afford to stay any longer. It would be risky, but I'm sure they won't attack me right away.
"Oh, Michael," I hear from the TV as I pull out my phone from my pocket and make my way towards the exit. "You may have not noticed, but people all around the world are watching, and unless your time in the grave made you forget you aren't an only child." As I step outside and my phone starts ringing, I hear an enraged shout from the TV.
"YOU BASTARD" then the door closes shut as the number of my driver appears on my phone.
