Quickly, I closed my eyes, folded my palms, and began to cast a spell. No one can hear the words I said, only my lips moved. I cared less to listen to what the wolves were saying at that critical point in time of my life.
"Thy hand who strike thee, hand fall short. Fall uncontrolled, ground shall stuck! Breath paused, air blend to water, so mote it be."
I opened my eyes immediately and behold, Derek's right hand was already raised and was set to strike me. Exactly the same time, the empty bottle of the whiskey he had drank earlier shattered into pieces with a bristling sound. His coat was pulled off him and flown across the floor, but he was unharmed in any way. Nevertheless, he carried on with his plan to stab me before the alpha finally intervened.
"Stop Derek! There is nothing more to prove, she passed the test. Are you now convinced she is the one?"
At once, Derek heeded the Alpha's command and stopped, with frustrations showing on his face. I knew it would have pleased him to kill me. By the way, why was this simply made up? To try me and see if I possess any magical powers?
'And wait a minute, didn't I make a spell to bind Derek and shove him across the floor very hard? What went wrong with the spell? It worked on his belongings instead of working on him. His coat was pulled from him and flung like it was nothing. His bottle of whiskey exploded but why didn't my magic affect him and the knife he held? Could it be that what Gia told me a long time ago just happened? Maybe, that's the possible explanation for what just happened,' I reasoned.
She once told me how the two Werewolves she fought resisted being bound by her magic spell. According to Gia, 'it doesn't just work on them no matter how hard and strong your spell can be.'
I once asked her why the wolves were able to resist her spell and she said, "Their body was built to naturally withstand magic spells, unlike mere humans. Their body frequency is never on the same page with the individual trying to cast a spell on them, hence the abnormality."
Even though lady Gia said that she later changed her words and told me, only from your mother's magic book can a witch make a spell strong enough to pin a wolf? That was how I came to know about the said book, I'm about to reclaim in Muldoch.
Excited, Eric stepped forward to reach out to me, "were you hurt Witch?" I could tell his voice sounded much better than the other wolves.
"I'm fine," I told him.
Derek went back to his seat and refused to pick up his fallen coat. He kept staring at the shattered bottle of his whisky in amazement and unbelief. "What trick was that Witch?"
"A trick to save my ass from a butcher like you." For the first time, I summoned enough courage to taunt him.
He takes his seat, "oh I see, you are tough, right?"
The alpha stepped in again, "I told you, she is the one but you wouldn't listen. You have doubted her before but now, I'm sure your doubts have been cleared. She has proven you wrong again."
"I can't believe this was a setup to test my abilities. I have told you guys to let me go please if there is no curse to break,'' I lamented.
"Shut up!" hurled the alpha. "We have a deal and it must go as we have planned."
I stopped talking for some minutes. I thought about what I had planned to do with Derek if my magic powers had gone through. My original intention was to throw him on the floor and then make him roll like a baby. But today, he was a lucky son of a bitch.
"How do we get into the city so you can get the book?" Asked Alpha Ammon.
"We will go in the nighttime to minimize our chance of being busted."
"I agree with that. You will have to cover your face with a veil so people will not discover your identity. In that way, you will get things done easily."
"Sound to me like a good idea. You will have to wait outside the underground building," I told them.
"Why should we wait outside? Is that your escape plan?" Derek breaks his silence. He has not said a word after what happened. He turns to face Ammon, "we will go with her wherever she goes. I mean you all, have seen what she is capable of. Any slightest opportunity we give her will mark the beginning of her plans to escape."
Deep down, I felt like escaping. However, where will I go from here if I eventually succeeded and escaped? I can't even go back to my fellow Witches at Muldoch because most of them if not all, have been killed by Revolutionists. I will have to move to a whole new place very far from Murdoch and far from the reach of the Wolves. When I think about this, the prospect of leaving always diminishes in my mind.
"I don't plan to escape but if you insist you will follow me to the very end then, so be it. But, you will have to bear the consequences that will follow should we get caught," I warned them.
"Witch, it's time to get some rest. Get up and walk into the next room," Ammon pointed to his right side of the house as he spoke. "Inside that room, you will see a bed with a blanket on it. Make yourself comfortable there. Tomorrow we will go to Muldoch and get the magic book you have spoken of. Now, go in as I have told you."
I got up and walked inside the room he had told me to make use of. The room was fairly nice. It has a lot of paintings on the wall suggesting the alpha was a good artist. First, I sat on the bed before trying to lay down when my eyes
caught something irresistible in the room.
