Chapter 1 - The Midnight Departure

Chapter 1: The Midnight Departure

Kaito's eyes fluttered open to the rhythmic clanking of the train's wheels on the tracks. It was past midnight. The moon hung high in the sky, casting a silvery glow on the empty streets of the station as the train slowly came to life. The gleaming lights inside the train car flickered on, illuminating the three friends: Kaito, his best friends Haru and Yuki, who were sitting across from him in the nearly empty compartment. They were on their way to Tokyo, embarking on an impromptu adventureā€”a getaway that had been planned on a whim a few days ago.

The train wasn't the usual bustling one that Kaito had expected. Instead of being filled with people, the carriages were oddly quiet. The only other passengers were two elderly women in the next compartment, sitting silently, their faces obscured by the shadows.

"It's a bit creepy, don't you think?" Haru whispered, staring out the window into the vast darkness that surrounded them.

Yuki, always the skeptic, rolled her eyes. "You're just overthinking it. It's just an ordinary late-night train ride. Nothing to worry about."

Kaito stared out the window too, the faint glow of distant streetlights flickering in and out of sight as the train sped past them. The city was disappearing behind them, and the world outside seemed to fall into an abyss. He adjusted his seat, glancing at his friends.

"I wonder what Tokyo will be like. I've heard it's always bustling with people at night," Kaito said, his voice tinged with excitement.

Yuki smiled, her eyes lighting up. "We'll see soon enough."

Just then, the train began to slow down, its speed dwindling to a crawl. Kaito frowned, noticing that the track ahead seemed to disappear into an inexplicable mist, a thick fog that swallowed the world whole. It wasn't like any fog he had ever seen before. The train's lights blinked uncertainly, casting eerie shadows across the seats.

"What's going on?" Haru asked, his voice laced with unease.

Yuki tried to peer out the window, but the fog was too dense, completely blocking their view. The train groaned under the sudden weight of stillness, its motion stuttering as though caught in the grips of something unnatural.

"I've never seen fog like this before," Kaito murmured, his heart racing. "It's almost like the train is... stuck."

Suddenly, the entire train jerked violently, and the lights flickered, throwing the compartment into darkness. Then, as if on cue, an overwhelming drowsiness washed over them. Kaito felt his eyelids grow heavy, his limbs becoming as if filled with lead. His friends were similarly affected. The last thing Kaito saw before his consciousness faded was the eerie mist creeping in through the cracks of the windows, wrapping around the train like a suffocating blanket.

---

When Kaito awoke, it was to an unfamiliar soundā€”soft waves lapping against a shoreline. His body felt strange, as though it had been pulled from deep within the earth itself. He sat up, blinking furiously, trying to clear the haze from his mind. He was no longer on the train. In fact, there was no sign of the train at all.

Confused, Kaito looked around. He found himself on a stretch of sand, the vastness of the ocean stretching endlessly before him. The air was thick with humidity, and the scent of salt and earth hung heavily around him. It was as though they had been transported somewhere entirely different.

Haru was the first to sit up, groaning as he rubbed his head. "What... where are we?"

Yuki scrambled to her feet, her eyes scanning the unfamiliar surroundings. "This isn't Tokyo. This isn't anywhere I've seen before."

Kaito's heart pounded as he took in their surroundingsā€”a rocky island, the waves crashing against jagged cliffs that seemed to be devoid of life. There were no signs of any civilization, no paths, no sounds except the ocean's quiet whispers.

"What happened?" Kaito murmured, his voice shaky. His mind was racing, trying to piece together the events that had led to this moment. The fog. The train slowing down. The sudden wave of dizziness. And then... nothing.

The three of them were alone on the island. No one else was in sight.

"We need to figure out how to get out of here," Haru said, his voice growing more serious. "Where's the train? Where are the other passengers?"

Yuki paced back and forth. "I don't even remember getting off the train. It was like... we just... vanished."

Kaito's mind was reeling. The fog, the dizzinessā€”it all seemed too surreal. They had been on their way to Tokyo, and now they were stranded on some strange island, with no memory of how they'd gotten there. The eerie silence of the island seemed to press in on them, making Kaito's chest tighten with dread.

"I think we should explore. We can't just sit here," Kaito suggested, trying to mask the fear in his voice.

His two friends nodded in agreement, and together, they set off along the shore, scanning the horizon for any sign of life or a way off the island.

But no matter how far they walked, no matter how many hours passed, the island stretched on endlessly. No rescue. No answers.

Just the feeling that something was watching them.

And then, at the edge of the island, Kaito spotted something unusualā€”something that made his blood run cold.

A lone figure stood at the water's edge, their back to him, as though waiting for them to arrive.

"Who... is that?" Kaito whispered, his voice barely audible.

The figure did not turn.

And that was when the reality began to sink in: they weren't supposed to be here.

They were trapped.

And whatever happened to the trainā€”whatever force had pulled them hereā€”would not let them leave.
