~CHAPTER 1~
The world we knew was gone, the people we loved, Our family and our friends whom we've known all our lives, all turned into monsters.
The few of us that was left on earth turned into scavengers and some into hunters in order to survive even another moment in this deathly wave.
The vabriant city I once knew was now void and empty, no single sight of a human in the streets, there was no moving cars, all the cars and automobiles were all parked and abandoned in the streets, there was no single plane in the sky anymore, no internet, no electricity, just darkness, grim and death.
My Name is Diana Sinclair, and this is the story of how the world ended and how I died in the process. Or so I thought.

~BACK TO THE BEGINNING ~
My eyes flew open once my alarm beep went off. I turned to the side to give my alarm clock a small smile before turning it off.
I turned on the speaker and my favorite song blasted off from it.
I quickly jumped out of bed and went straight for the shower as I enjoyed and vibed to the music.
Today's the first day of school since the summer break. And I haven't seen my boyfriend in months now so I was a little excited to see him again.
Scratch that, I was excited a lot.
I missed my friends too, Especially Emily. Can't wait to catch up with all of them today at school.
I did a little makeup to enhance my looks and feel more confident, I loved putting on makeup, I couldn't go anywhere without a touch of makeup.
After putting on one of the new clothes I bought during the summer break, I decided to take one last look at the mirror and touch up my lips with my favorite strawberry cherry lipgloss for the extra shine.
I searched my bags and whole room for that particular gloss but couldn't find it anywhere.
Damn it Mel.
"Mom! Mel took my lipgloss from my backpack again!" I said angrily when I rushed down the stairs into the kitchen.
"Melissa, what did I say about boundaries? Why didn't you tell your sister before taking her things?" My mom questioned Mel, My annoying little sister, who won't quit stealing my stuffs.
"I didn't just take it. I just borrowed. Didn't think she would mind. And She has like five of those anyways." Mel said.
"Um five of those which I am all making use of. Quit stealing my stuff kid." I warned her and she rolled her eyes at me.
"Now where is it?"I asked Mel.
"I'll give it back later, now would you just chill?" She said to me.
"Mom?" I called her for assistance.
"Mel, give your sister back her lipgloss. Please. Thank you." She said to Mel and she rolled her eyes again.
"Urgh! Fine. Whatever. Here, take it and eat it." Mel shoved the lipgloss at me and went ahead to turn on the TV.
"You little brat!" I wanted to drag her by the hair but my Mom gave me a stern look which made me retreat from the act.
She was packing our lunch for school for both Mel and I when there was suddenly a breaking news on TV.
"Huh? What's this about a viral outbreak? Is this for real?" Mel asked our Mom.
"I'm not sure. Probably not. Wouldn't be the first time they're saying something about a viral outbreak, and they do that like every year. It's probably one of the same old News." Mom said.
"Don't believe everything you see on the News dumbass." I said to Mel and she squeezed her face at me which made me smirk in return.
"Okay that's enough. Already Have your lunch packed and ready to go. Diana do you mind dropping off your sister? I have to get to work. I'm late." My Mom said to me and didn't wait for me to respond before zooming off.
Seriously?
"Mom!!" I whined.
"Sorry sweetie. Let's move out." She said standing besides the door waiting for us to come out of the house.
I entered my car grumpily and waited for little miss bratty pants to get in.
"I don't like this anymore than than you do so don't flatter yourself." Mel said to me once she got into the car.
"Just shut it." I said to her and drove off to school.
~
I was a senior in high school while my sister was still in middle school.
We both go to the same school. Westbrook City School. It has both Kindergarten, Middle school and High school all together but all divided in different sections.
I parked the car in the school driveway and we got off the car together.
"Hey, if I wait for you for more that 30 seconds after school, I'm leaving without you. Got it?" I said to her and she rolled her eyes at me.
"Yeah sure , I'll bet on it. Bye loser." She said to me and ran off to meet her friends by the sidewalk.
I headed to the high school section of the school.
Down the hallway, straight to my locker.
Alot of people already greeted and hugged me along the way. I guess I was that popular.
"Hi Diana! Oh my gosh I love the curls on your hair!" One of the girls in the hallway said to me and I smiled brightly.
"Thank you Gigi." I said to the girl.
I unpacked some of my new notes I bought into my locker and arranged the inside a bit before spraying my favorite perfume inside for extra freshness.
"Diana!!!!" I heard one of my friends, Kayley calling out my name.
I turned and gave her a big hug as she ran into me.
"Kay Kay, Hi!" I said to her excitedly.
"Oh my gosh your hair!" She said excitedly as she touched my hair.
I naturally had bone straight blonde hair but I decided to add some curls to it for the summer break and kept it on till now.
"Adorbs right?" I asked her.
"Totally adorbs." She agreed with me and we both shrieked excitedly.
"Well well well. Hello strangers." Emily said to me and Kayley as she joined us shortly.
Emily Davis, best friend since kindergarten. My ride or die.
"Emily! I missed you." I said to her and gave her a warm hug.
"Missed you too chiko." She said to me.
"Hey Kayley." She said to her and hugged her too.
"Nice of you to notice me too Em." Kay said to Emily as they hugged.
"Sorry." Emily said shyly to her.
"Yeah whatever. Well?? Aren't you going to comment about this?" Kayley said to Emily while pointing out my hair.
"Yeah she was like the first person to see it during the summer break so..." I said.
"Yeah it's old news to me." Emily added.
"You guys are unbelievable. You've been keeping in touch all these while during the break and leaving me out. Not fair to this trio thing we got going on." Kayley said sounding offended.
"Sorry." I said to her and Emily raised her eyebrows in amusement.
Someone suddenly lifted me up from behind and I knew exactly who it was.
My one true love, Nathan Parker.
"Hey baby. I missed you so so much." He said to me in my ears and I turned around to see him properly.
Yep. He's still as handsome as ever.
"I missed you more babe." I said to him and gave him a deep kiss.
I heard fake coughing from my friends and kissed him even more.
"Okay okay okay we get it. You both are in love. Knock it out already we have classes to attend." Kayley finally said in a tortured voice.
"Okay. I'm ready for class now." I said to them after I was done kissing him.
"See you later beautiful." Nathan said to me and smiled before leaving my friends and I to ourselves.
"Isn't he charming?" I asked them.
"He sure is." Emily said in a sarcastic tone.
I know Emily never really liked my boyfriend for reasons still unknown to me.
He's never done anything bad to her but she keeps on antagonizing him.
"Oh don't be bitter." I said to her and she rolled her eyes.
~~~~
During classes, everyone seemed not to be paying attention cause they thought geometry class was boring. But I loved it personally. All the drawings and math was good for me because I wanted to major in architecture in college.
Everyone kept chattering and mumbling loudly. Even I was sorry for the teacher.
"Dahlia please drop the phone! You know you aren't allowed to use your phone during classes. Now hand it over." Mr Rogers said to Dahlia, my classmate who was causing a nuisance with her phone.
"But sir, there's a weird News going on online. And I think it's serious." Dahlia said to him trying to change the topic.
"Hand the phone over." Mr Rogers said once more.
"Urgh fine." Dahlia stood up reluctantly and handed the phone to Mr Rogers.
"Thank you. Have your seat. You'll get this back after classes." He said to her and she scoffed.
As the class was getting more interesting, the school bell rang for lunch time.
Oh well.
I met my friends, Emily and Kayley by the hallway and we all went to the cafeteria.
We sat with Nathan and his fellow jock friends.
"Hey Diana. Nice curls." Louis, Nathan's best friend said to me and I simply smiled and waved at him.
Louis used to have a crush on me, he once told me back in junior high but I liked Nate already and turned him down then. But with his constant check ups, glances and subtle flirtatious commentary towards me, I knew he wasn't over me yet which is why I kept my distance from him.
"Hey guys, check out this trending video." One of Nate's friends Billy , showed us a video of a girl violently attacking a guy.
She bit off his ears and blood began to gush out.
"Eww what is this?" Kayley asked disgusted about what she just saw.
The girl kept biting the guy's neck till he stopped struggling and stopped moving on the ground.
"Wait, is he dead?" I asked everyone.
"No way. It's gotta be a skit. Just wait till you see what happens a few minutes after the girl runs off to God knows where." Nate's friend said.
All our eyes remained focused on the guy lying lifelessly on the ground till suddenly he started shaking vehemently.
"What the hell? Is he convulsing?" Emily added in shock.
"We haven't gotten to the best part yet." Nate's friend said.
After a few seconds of convulsing on the ground, the guy slowly stood up. His whole demeanor changed. He suddenly looked deranged and crazy.
He looked back at the camera and crashed it.
"Whoa. Okay what the hell was that?" Kayley asked.
"Like I said. It must be a skit just for the views. People can do anything just for views these days." Nate's friend, Billy said.
"Yeah Billy's probably right. People can be so crazy these days." Nathan supported him.
"Yeah you're right." Emily seconded.
"Right." I said but still felt uneasy about the whole video.
"So guys, there's a party tonight at Tiffany's place. Hope you guys are coming?" Billy asked us.
"Of course! Wouldn't miss any of Tiffany's parties. We'll be there." Kayley said.
"I don't know... maybe." I said unsure if I would be able to make it.
"Babe you have to come. It's our senior year, we need to make the most of it." Nathan said looking at me with those lovey dovey eyes.
"Okay sure I'll be there." I said and kissed his lips and I heard so many disapproving sounds from the table.
~~~~
When I got back home, I quickly checked out some cool outfit I could wear tonight and saw something good.
Perfect. Now I just have to convince Mom to let me go.
Once it was getting dark, I decided to tell my mom about the party.
She was watching TV with Mel in the living room.
"Mom?" I called her sweetly.
"Yeah Sweetie." She answered.
"So, one of my very good friends is throwing a get together party tonight, everyone I know is going so I was wondering if I could maybe go too? And I promise I'll be back early." I said in the most loving manner.
"Honey. I'm sorry but it's going to have to be a no. This viral outbreak stuff seems to be getting more real, and I don't want to risk it for tonight." She said to me.
"I thought you said it wasn't real this morning? Come on don't tell me you believe it is." I said to her.
"I'm sorry Diana but no. No going out tonight. We need to lay low till tomorrow. By then the news will be clearer." She said to me and I frowned.
"Urgh Mom! You're ruining my senior year! I can't believe you." I whined and ran upstairs to my room to sulk.
After a few minutes of sulking, I called Nathan to tell him I wouldn't be coming to the party.
I also called Emily and Kayley to break it to them as well.
They all seemed very disappointed as I was.
I went to the bathroom and washed off all my makeup and put on my comfy pajamas all ready for bed.
I watched some new videos that was just uploaded about people going violent on each other like the one we watched in school.
What is this all about?
~~~~~~
During the next day at school, people kept talking about those videos that was trending all over online.
Even the teachers were talking about it.
It seemed to be getting more serious.
Surprisingly school was dismissed earlier than usual and everyone was warned to go home straight.
"Guys this is getting serious. What if it's actually real. The viral outbreak? The violent attacks? The biting and craziness? It's all like the start of a zombie movie." Kayley said.
"Now who's the crazy one? Zombies? Really Kayley?" Emily asked her.
"What better explanation is there?" Kayley argued.
"Emily's right Kay. Zombies aren't real. It's fiction. This on the other hand, is real. And I'm sure there's an explanation. We just need to keep watching the News." I said to them.
"I don't know, I'm just saying, this is all how it starts you know." Kayley said before giving up the theory.
"I'll catch you guys later for ice cream. Need to drop my annoying sister home first." I said to them.
"Right. Sweet little Mel. How is she doing by the way?" Emily asked me.
"Don't even ask. Getting even more annoying by the day. If my mom won't do it, I'll ship her off for adoption myself. Bye guys." I said to them and went straight to the middle school section to wait for her.
~
"Took you long enough." I said to her.
"Sorry. We were watching those videos that's all over online about the zombies." She said to me.
"Mel come on, you're smarter than that. Zombies aren't real." I said to her as we got into the car.
"Then how do you explain those videos?" She asked me.
"I'm sure there's an explanation and it isn't zombies." I replied and she shook her head disapprovingly.
~~~~~
On our way back home, traffic was suddenly heavy in town which made us stuck on the road longer than usual.
"Stupid traffic. Why now?" I said completely annoyed.
"What could be holding it up?" Mel asked.
"How should I know? We're both sitting here!" I snapped at her.
"Geez sorry for asking, drama queen." She said to me and rolled her eyes.
"Whatever, I'm going to find out what's holding it up." I said and got down from the car.
I made my way through the cars parked in front of ours to get further forward to see what was happening. And that's when I saw some group of people running towards me or rather running away from something.
I didn't wait to find out what they were running from as I joined them in running.
Immediately I got back to my car, I quickly got in and locked the door.
"What? What is it? Why are you running? Why is everybody running?" Mel asked me panicking.
"I don't know, I don't know. I saw people running and I followed suit." I said to her.
We both kept silent and watched as people ran back inside their cars and locking it behind them.
Then that's when I saw them. Some other group of people, running as well but they weren't just running, they were chasing.
They looked deranged, their eyes red filled with veins, their skin looking so discolored and out of place, their movement so fast to be human. They were attacking people and biting into their skin.
I watched as one of them tackled a lady, she landed on my car, and she bit on the lady's neck, she kept biting till the lady stopped moving. Looking dead with her eyes wide open.
I watched as the lady began convulsing, then suddenly standing on her feet, looking deranged as well, her skin suddenly discolored with red eyes, running after other innocent people.
That is when it dawned to me.
Zombies. They're zombies.
