Sophia didn't go home Immediately, as the manager helped her, she is now secure with a good job. She continues to work for the remaining hours of the day. She decided that she would help them until closing time.
The manager went out for a few hours. One of their senior colleagues in the café came back from outside who didn't know what was going on.
As customers gathered, Sophia was arranging chairs, and at the same time taking people's orders.
The lady yelled at Sophia "Why are you so…slow?" She asked, sitting down and crossing her arms. I am sorry, please the other is too much.
"Can you please get up and give me a helping hand?" Sophia asked, looking at the Lady.
"What rubbish is that? How can someone like you ask me without manners" her senior colleague said promptly. The lady slammed Sophia in front of the customers.
Their conversation interrupted the customers as everybody turned to look at them. "Do you think there is a place for people like you here?" "I am so sorry ma," Sophia said.
She cleared her throat. "Your three days on trial will finish tomorrow, and I will see who is going to give you the job.
"Sophia looked at her and smiled with confidence. "I will be leaving soon, I am not interested in working here anymore. I got another job." Sophia said and chuckled.
The lady shut her mouth immediately, she was speechless. Later "Em…please, help us take their order," she managed to say.
Sophia went and continued to be busy with work. They later finished, and she boarded a taxi home.
When Sophia arrived home, she dropped her bag and walked to Lisa's room, she told her everything that happened. Lisa was happy with her new job. Later She returned to their room.
Sophia sat on the edge of her bed, the room was silent except for the faint ticking of the old clock on the wall. She got tired, her mother was sleeping and wanted to tell her about her new job.
She had barely slept, waiting for the car that Richard Edison promised would come to pick her up. Every sound outside made her flinch, thinking it was finally time.
The offer still felt unreal. Five hundred dollars a week, and one thousand dollars bonus per month? A personal assistant to a CEO? It was like something out of a dream. Or a trick.
She glanced at her mother, who was still asleep in the evening. She entered the kitchen and prepared what they would eat.
Sophia had spent the night watching over her mother, but she wasn't at rest as she kept thinking about her job. If she took this job, she could finally afford real treatment for her mother. That thought alone gave her the courage to push aside her doubts.
She was lying on the bed thinking about her new job while watching over her mother until she slept off.
Sophia woke up in the morning, staring at her mother on her bed, she tried to wake her mom, "Mama," her mom was still sleeping, she doesn't usually wake early."
Sophia is still anticipating the car. She went to the roadside if she could see any car coming, but she didn't see any. Later She went to see Lisa.
Later she returned to their room, and her mother was awake "Good morning Mama," her mother nodded and showed her a weak smile.
She sat with her mother discussing, and she told her about her new job. Later she heard a slight sound, she checked through the window and saw someone outside with Randi.
Randi is the only guy in their compound, who is constantly looking for Sophia's trouble, he would rather not see her close to any man in the compound…
Randi is always calling her his future wife and her mother is always warning her to stay away from him.
Sophia went outside to see the man standing with Randi. Two men were holding her picture with her home address, "Yeah… Here's the lady," one of them said.
Sophia greeted them and told them she had been anticipating their coming since yesterday and why are they staying outside.
They told her what happened, it was Randi who told them that it was the wrong address and no one bearing that name in the compound.
Sophia was angry with Randi, "Why are you trying to rubbish my life?" She asked Randi.
But Randi couldn't say a word.
She told them about her sick mother, and they guys entered the room and greeted her. Then, they went outside where they parked the car to wait for her.
Sophia had already prepared everything waiting for the time. She wanted to go, but her mother kept on worrying about her decision.
Sophia turned and knelt beside her mother's bed, gently shaking her shoulder. "Mama, I will be fine, don't worry. Lisa is here with you."
Her mother stirred, opening her eyes weakly. "Sophia?" She murmured. Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"The car is here," Sophia said softly. "The job I told you about… I'm leaving for it now."
Her mother blinked slowly, trying to gather her strength. "You're sure about this?" Her mother asked.
Sophia nodded "Yes." She forced a small smile. "It pays well. Once I get my first salary, we can go to the hospital. You'll get better soon, I assure you."
Her mother reached for her hand, squeezing it weakly. "Just be careful, my daughter. Good things don't come easily."
Sophia swallowed the lump in her throat. "I know, Mama. I'll be okay."
Her mother sighed, her eyes clouded with worry. "God is with you."
Sophia nodded, kissed her mother's forehead, she grabbed her small handbag.
She had a car sound going, and she rushed to see, "Hey!, hey! Why are you going?" She yelled. Taking a deep breath, Randi was standing. He burst into laughter.
They told her that it was Randi who told them she rejected the job because of her mother's condition. She turned to Randi who was still laughing "You're insane, you'll never ruin my life."
She dropped her handbag inside the car and rushed to say goodbye to her neighborhood friend "Lisa." She came back to where the car waited.
The driver, a man in a crisp black suit, gave her a polite nod. "Miss Sophia?"
"Yes." She answered.
"Please, get in." The driver said.
She slid into the leather seat, her hands gripping her bag tightly. As the car rolled away and started moving, she felt both excitement and fear curl in her stomach.
Lisa showed up to say goodbye, she waved her inside the car, as the driver drove off.
She was stepping into a new world.
