Chereads / THE AGE-GAP MARRIAGE / The Strain of Reality

The Strain of Reality

She didn't see it coming. After that evening, everything had changed. Her interactions with Vikram seemed to have crossed an invisible line, blurring the boundary between work and personal life. They had met a few times after dinner—lunches, casual chats during client meetings, even spontaneous coffee breaks. Each time, she couldn't help but feel the magnetic pull between them, the growing connection that wasn't just professional anymore. But things weren't as simple as they seemed.

The next morning, Riya was on a call with her colleague, Neha, when she received a message from Vikram.

"I need to talk to you about something important. Can you meet me in the office later today? Let me know when you're free."

Riya's heart skipped a beat. Important? She swallowed, her mind racing. Was it about their project? Or perhaps it was something... more?

She quickly wrapped up her call with Neha and set a time to meet Vikram in the office. The rest of the day felt like it was moving in slow motion. Every time her phone buzzed, her heart jumped—was it him? But nothing came through. And then, when the time finally arrived, she walked into his office, her hands cold with anticipation.

Vikram was seated at his desk, his fingers drumming lightly on the surface. When he saw her, he gestured for her to sit down.

"Riya, please, take a seat."

Her stomach fluttered as she sat down across from him, suddenly feeling a little out of place.

"Is everything okay?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm despite the nervousness creeping up on her.

Vikram studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, he leaned back in his chair, exhaling deeply.

"Riya, I've been thinking a lot about the dynamics between us. Between you and me."

Her heart thudded in her chest. She didn't expect the sudden seriousness in his tone.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Vikram looked out the window, as if gathering his thoughts. "You're... younger than me. You're at a different stage of life. And I'm not sure what you're looking for in this relationship."

Riya's throat tightened. Relationship? She hadn't thought of it as something that would even be labeled yet. But hearing him speak those words out loud—suddenly, everything felt so much more real.

"Vikram," she began, her voice trembling slightly, "I... I don't know what you mean. I don't expect anything. But, I thought we were just getting to know each other. I didn't realize it was such a problem."

He sighed deeply, his eyes never meeting hers. "It's not about you, Riya. It's about us. About how we're perceived. You're young, ambitious, full of potential. You don't need to be burdened by someone like me. I'm older, I've been around the block. I've already made my mistakes."

Riya felt a wave of frustration flood over her. She didn't need his self-pity.

"What is it with you?" she demanded. "Why does age matter so much? I'm not a kid. I'm perfectly capable of making my own choices. This—whatever this is between us—has nothing to do with age or perceptions. It has to do with how we connect. How I feel when I'm with you." Her voice softened, though the sting of vulnerability hung in the air. "And it's not something I can just turn off because of what people think."

Vikram looked at her then, his eyes heavy with regret. "I never wanted to hurt you, Riya. I care about you. But I'm just not sure I can offer you what you want."

Riya was silent for a long moment, her thoughts racing. She didn't know what she had been expecting from this conversation, but it wasn't this. She had thought they could figure things out, maybe with time, but now she was starting to feel as though she was asking for something impossible.

"You're making it sound like I'm some charity case," Riya said, trying to steady her voice. "Like I'm too young, too inexperienced, to understand what I want or who I want to be with."

"No," Vikram said quickly, his voice thick with regret. "That's not what I meant at all. It's just that... I don't want to drag you into a situation where it's too complicated. Where people are judging us, and it affects your career, your future. You deserve someone who can give you all the right answers without hesitation."

Her mind was spinning. She had to stand her ground.

"You're not some kind of mistake, Vikram. We're adults. I'm not asking you to solve my problems or give me a life plan. I'm just asking for honesty. For us to take a chance, without worrying about what everyone else thinks."

Vikram's face softened, but there was still a distance between them, an invisible wall that neither of them could cross.

"I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of risk," he admitted quietly.

Riya stood up abruptly, her heart pounding. She had never felt so frustrated.

"Then maybe I'm not ready for this either," she said, her voice sharp now. "You've built so many walls, Vikram. Walls that don't just keep other people out—they keep you locked in, and me, too." She took a deep breath, her mind made up. "I'm done trying to figure you out."

She turned to leave, her pulse racing, but Vikram's voice stopped her.

"Riya, wait."

She paused but didn't turn around.

"I never meant to hurt you," he said, his tone softer now. "I... I care about you more than you know."

Riya's breath hitched, and she closed her eyes for a moment. "I care about you too," she said, her voice breaking despite her best efforts to keep it together. "But maybe we both need to figure out what that really means. I don't want to be part of your 'what if.'"

She didn't wait for him to respond. She walked out of his office, her heart aching with something that felt like the loss of a dream she didn't know she had until it was almost out of reach.

That evening, Riya sat on the balcony of her apartment, staring at the city lights below. Her phone buzzed several times, messages from friends, colleagues, but nothing from Vikram. She felt a pit in her stomach—the kind you get when something that felt so right had been torn apart by confusion and fear.

But she wasn't going to let herself fall apart. Not this time.

Maybe it wasn't just about the age gap. Maybe it was the fear of the unknown, the fear of risking something precious and not knowing how to protect it.

As she closed her eyes, she felt the weight of the situation settle in. And she knew that this wasn't over. Not yet.

==================

Vikram's doubts about their age gap and the reality of their situation create a rift between them, leading to a tense confrontation. However, there's still an undeniable connection between them, and Riya's resolve will keep her from giving up easily.
