Chapter 1: Goodbye Quebec
December 3, 1917
"Mom, why do we have to go to Uncle Larry's?" said 12 year old Henry.Â
"Well Henry, your uncle just got fired and he's renting out a place to stay. I think he just needs some help."
"But why do we have to go during my winter break?"Â
"Just finish packing!"
Henry's Dad was packing the car and hollered. "It's time to go!"
"But Dad, I don't want to leave Quebec. It's such a long train ride to Nova Scotia."
"Do it for your uncle, son. Now get in the car, we don't want to miss our train."Â
Henry complained all the way to the train station. He really didn't want to do this train ride. They arrived at the train station and there were tons of people all stuffed together. "Yes!" "We're finally here Dad!" he said sarcastically.Â
"Yes son, we are here and so are a lot of other people."Â
They walked all the way to their platform and sat on a bench. "Dad, how long is it till the train gets here?"Â
"Around 30 minutes Henry."Â
"Ok. I guess I will write in my journal to pass the time." Henry pulled out his journal and started writing.

If you're reading this I'm from Quebec CityÂ
and I'm about to go to Nova Scotia to see my uncle.
His name is Larry. He's jobless and my mom says he
needs help. I'm signing off now. Henry
"Hey Dad I don't think I'm going to get that much sleep on the train so can I go to sleep now and you wake me up when the train gets here?"Â
"Sure son" replied his dad.
Henry had 30 minutes to get a good nap in before the train would arrive.Â
"Henry, Henry, Henry!"Â
"What Dad?"
"The train is here and it's boarding!" They got on the train and it started moving.
"Hey Dad, I forgot to ask you how long is this train ride?"Â
"Over 18 hours."Â
"18 HOURS!" Henry said in shock. "Well I guess I'll pass the time by writing in my journal." He reached into his bag and grabbed his journal. Henry spent the rest of the ride in his compartment looking out the window and writing. He was so bored, he couldn't wait until this train ride was over.
