Bonus Chapter: The Car Moment
Sophie leaned against the passenger seat, her gaze drifting to the rear-view mirror. There, hanging like a charm, was the wooden compass she had gifted Ethan all those years ago. "Huh? You still have this? Wow, how old!" she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with nostalgia.
Ethan grinned, clearly pleased to see her reaction. "I never let it go. It reminds me of you," he replied, his voice warm with sentiment. He could see her mesmerized by the little piece of their past.
"There's also something I wanted to show you," he said, pulling out his phone. With a few taps, he opened up an old chat thread. "Remember this number?"
Sophie squinted at the screen as he handed her his phone. Her heart raced as she began scrolling through the messages. The familiar text bubbles were a blast from the past, each one a reminder of their connection during those formative years.
Old Chats:
*Ethan: Hey Sophie! How's the hospital treating you? 😊
*Ethan: Just finished a long shift. Wish I could see you!
*Ethan: You won't believe what happened today. I saved a life! Just wanted to share it with you.
*Ethan: I know you're busy, but I'm always here if you want to chat.
*Ethan: I miss our talks. Let me know if you're free!
Sophie's eyes widened with each message. Stunned, she found herself unable to say anything as she read on. The realization hit her hard: despite the silence on her end, Ethan had never stopped reaching out.
"Thanks to your assistant, I managed to get the phone that has that number—" Ethan began, but before he could finish, Sophie hugged him tightly, her heart swelling with emotions.
"Hey, I mentioned that adventure I really wanted, right? Unexpectedly, I think I found the treasure and the adventure itself now..."
Ethan felt a wave of warmth as he returned her embrace, noticing the glimmer of tears in her eyes. In that moment, he understood how much this connection meant to her, how deeply she felt. "I'm glad you think so," he whispered, holding her close.
As they pulled away, the world around them faded, leaving just the two of them in their own little bubble of shared memories and unspoken promises.
