Chapter 1 - Introduction

She pulled her long black hair into a ponytail. The circular teardrop of her face was otherworldly paired with her wide hazel eyes and plump lips. She was short and thin but curvy. She wore a white coat over her white uniform. She hopped out of her car with her travel mug in hand, the soothing scent of hazelnut forming an enriching cloud surrounding her.

She walked into The Industry. It was a classified building that studied human mutants. She had been recruited a few months ago due to her research in psychology and biology. After signing an NDA that was essentially a death warrant she was given a job many would have never dared to dream of, and neither would she, but for different reasons.

Her office was of a modest size with two glass walls overlooking the city. In each corner were potted flowers. Facing her desk was a wide white couch. Her desk was glass that was textured with the shape of diamonds.

She sat at her computer and looked through the newly found specimens. She had completed her study on the last creature and expected to be given another. She scrolled through a giant without skin, a being with seventeen limbs, and paused when she saw a picture of what looked like a primate.

Before Violet could read the file her boss knocked on her glass door. She waved her boss in. The older woman rushed inside. She wore a casual business suit with pearl jewelry.

"Morning. We've decided you're better with hands on work if that's alright. They seem to trust you easier."

 "Thank you."

"We'll be giving you more cases to handle. You'll need this," She said as she placed a tranquilizer gun on Violet's desk, "Anything bigger than seven feet and eight hundred pounds will need two shots. Anything under four feet and ninety pounds try to pull the dart out."

 "Got it."

"I'll leave you to it unless you have anything for me."

 "I'm good, thanks."

With that she left and Violet returned to reading. The creature was ten feet tall with fur a bright sapphire color. His wide, glowing green eyes were hypnotizing. A thick mane of purple hair fell down his muscular back, parted by a row of horns. He was a thousand pounds of steel. Aside from his immense strength not much was known of him. As she read his file she saw the page update with the news that she was now assigned to him.

She finished off her coffee and made her way to the elevator. She descended to the lowest floor where she came to what had become the creature's home. She came into the observation room where she could easily see him through the bulletproof glass. He sat before a fountain that created the illusion of a waterfall filling a lake below. Surrounding him was greenery and small critters that he seemed uninterested in.

She watched him for a long moment before she took the kit from the cabinet behind her and strode into his enclosure. He turned his head, staring at her. She stopped briefly and watched as his eyes scanned every inch of her body, leaving her feeling exposed. As she drew closer she began to hear his heavy breathing rumble through the air with every rise of his chest. She set down the kit and knelt before him.

"Can you understand me?" She asked softly, reading intelligence in his gaze despite his silence, "I just need to run a few tests, alright?"

She opened the kit and tied a rubber band around his bicep. Her mind became hyper aware of the tranquilizer on her hip as she slid the needle into his vein but he didn't react. She could feel him watching her. She filled three bottles and taped a cotton swab to his arm. She then took her stethoscope and listened to his heart. She ran through all of the tests quicker than she ever had and he gave her no reaction through any of it. Eventually she shut the kit and sat on her haunches.

 "Can you speak?"

Those she studied were human even if they didn't look it. Why some humans mutated into something else was on a need to know basis and she didn't need to know.

His answer was a rumbling growl as his nostrils flared.

"That's alright. You don't have to speak."

"I can," He growled again, making her fight to maintain her poker face.

"Good. Do you have a name?"

"I assume you give numbers, not names."

"We do, but I can call you by your name if you prefer."

 "What is your name?"

"Violet. You can call me DR. Greene."

 "Blue."

"Can you tell me about your past?"

 "I want to know yours."

 "That wouldn't be appropriate."

He gave an understanding growl before saying, "I need rest."

 "Alright," Violet agreed, "Sleep well."

She left his enclosure and returned to her office. She put her notes in the database and after frying her brain with paperwork she finally drove home.

Walking inside she grabbed a plate of leftover salad from the fridge and ate it in the blink of an eye so she could go to bed as fast as she could. She laid under the blankets and closed her eyes. The sickly feeling of darkness hung over her bed like a sword attached to a weakening string. Violet had no friends or family, she never had, and she didn't think she ever could. Plenty of people at work had offered her their friendship and she'd turned them down fervently, cursing herself as she did.

Fighting the fleeting sleep she turned onto her side. Her breath caught. She could see a sleek blue figure sitting in the chair by her dresser. He was illuminated by the glow of the moon. His glowing yellow eyes watched her. She stilled, holding her breath as his lips parted in a jagged smile.

 "Who are you?"

"You can study me but I cannot do the same?"

Violet sat up. She silently stared at him as he held her gaze, wearing a satisfied smirk.

 "How are you here?"

 "How are you here?"

Violet stood. She crossed her arms and towered over him only to shrink when he brought himself to his feet as well, bowing his head to stare down at her. She swallowed.

"If you hurt me-" She began, only for her words to die in her throat when he stepped into her space, her skin inches from his, "Why are you here?"

"Your people did not give me much to enjoy myself with."

"So you thought you could toy with me."

"I thought I would return the favor."

She blinked and he was gone. She spun, looking everywhere in the room for a trace of him. She searched her apartment. Giving up she returned to her bedroom only to jump when she saw him sitting at the foot of her bed. Her hand covered her heart. Her ragged breathing stilled.

"I am not going to play this game with you."

His face slowly split apart to reveal a satisfied grin comprised of teeth like razor blades. Violet's hands balled into fists at her sides. She turned and sprinted down the short hallway, past the kitchen, and into the living room where she grabbed her pistol from under the couch. She turned and aimed it where he had sat a second ago only to find thin air. She lowered the weapon, her chest heaving and her forehead damp. Suddenly smooth fingers brushed her own and her gun was gone and she was being turned to face the man again. He held her to his chest. He pinned her arms behind her back.

"I am no danger to you. You interest me. That is all."

 "Get out of my apartment."

He leaned down to place a peck on her forehead before he vanished into thin air. She could still feel his soft lips in his absence. She stood there, stunned for a moment before she shook her head and returned to her room. She slipped back under the sheets. She could still feel his presence, his watchful gaze, but still she slept soundly.
