Chapter 2 - Shattered illusions

The sun poured through Mia's window, casting a warm glow over her room, now a cherished sanctuary filled with memories of that unforgettable day she met Liam. The photo of them together remained a constant reminder of her dream—a tangible touchstone she could reach for whenever doubt crept in. It had been a week since the meet-and-greet, and yet the thrill of that encounter pulsed through her veins. However, it was also a week filled with challenges, emotions, and newfound determination.

Mia had eagerly watched videos from the meet-and-greet, reveling in each laugh, each smile. While most commented on the joy of the event, others left harsh words that cut deeper than any knife. "She's just another delusional fan," one comment read. "Why would Liam ever pick someone like her?" Another scoffed, belittling her existence in the K-Pop world.

Each time she stumbled upon these comments, fury coursed through her. How could people be so cruel? It wasn't enough for them to love Eclipse; they had to tear down anyone who dared to dream alongside them. But underneath her anger lay a heavier weight—a fear that maybe those voices contained a sliver of truth.

But this time, she decided to take action. Inspired by Liam's interview, where he mentioned his desire to marry someone who could understand his culture, Mia felt an urgent need to learn Korean. "If I want to be taken seriously," she declared to herself firmly, "I have to show him I'm willing to understand him."

After doing some research, Mia signed up for a Korean language class at a local community center. The first class was a whirlwind of new sounds, characters, and basics of the language that felt as foreign as navigating a new world. Mia was determined, her heart set on mastering every nuance of this beautiful language.

As the weeks passed, she juggled her studies, work at the café, and time dedicated to chasing her dream. Every evening, she would bury herself in her lessons, practicing pronunciation and writing sentences. The excitement kept her motivated, and with every tutorial she completed, her confidence grew.

Meanwhile, Eclipse continued their world tour, and Mia found herself scrolling through their updates and live performances, absorbing every second she could while also facing the toxicity that sometimes accompanied the fandom. Rumors began to swirl within the community about Liam's relationship status, with whispers that he might be dating a rising star from a rival K-Pop group.

Mia's heart sank with every mention of the girl's name. Unable to suppress her anger and jealousy, she often muttered to herself around the house, "I'm way prettier than her. I have a better personality too!" She was aware that appearance wasn't everything, but having built herself up in the wake of those harsh comments, she took pride in knowing her beauty came from her confidence and strength. After all, she spent hours at the gym, loving her curvy figure and fiercely embracing her identity.

At work, Mia channeled her passion for K-Pop into light-hearted banter, but she always found herself on high alert when customers disrespected her first love. One evening, a group of rowdy customers entered the café, loud and obnoxious. Amid their laughter, one of them made a jab at Liam's masculinity. "You really think those idols are straight? The way they prance around on stage, it's just so..."

Mia felt a surge of protectiveness ignite within her. "Excuse me," she interrupted, fixing them with a fierce gaze. "Liam is married to me. So, maybe you should keep your hateful comments to yourself." The laughter faded, replaced by surprised stares.

"Oh really?" One customer smirked, clearly taken aback. "And what's your proof?"

Mia didn't back down. "He's in love with someone who understands him. Someone who respects him. So maybe you should just—" she paused, gathering her rage and composure, "shut up."

Her fearless response drew a mix of laughter and admiration from other patrons nearby, and while the group continued to snicker dismissively, Mia felt victorious. She had stood up for Liam, her dream, and herself.

Each night, as she returned home from work, exhausted but empowered, Mia would sit down to review her Korean lessons. She diligently practiced vocabulary, sentences, and pronunciation, often reciting her favorite lyrics to Eclipse songs. With each phrase she learned, she could almost feel Liam's presence, as though he was encouraging her from the other side of the world.

Despite the feelings of rage she wrestled with whenever she encountered negativity surrounding Liam, it also ignited a fire within her. On those dark days, she would talk herself up in the mirror, reminding herself or her strengths and unique beauty. "You are beautiful, Mia," she would whisper, her reflection offering a smiling reassurance. "You are confident, you are capable, and one day Liam will see that."

As weeks turned into months, Mia dedicated herself to her Korean lessons more than ever, attending classes three times a week and practicing daily with mobile apps that allowed her to learn on the go. She started connecting with other K-Pop fans worldwide, sharing her journey and dreams in online communities. This supportive network became her lifeline, offering a sense of belonging and camaraderie that lifted her spirits.

While she worked on herself, Mia was also checking Liam and Eclipse's updates regularly, feeling as if she was living vicariously through them. The whispers of Liam dating another idol weighed heavily on her heart, but with every performance she watched, seeing the chemistry between Liam and his bandmates, she felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe these rumors were just that—rumors.

One evening, as she scrolled through Instagram, a notification caught her eye. Eclipse had announced a fan voting event for a special music video they were producing—a chance for fans to submit videos showcasing their talents. The winner would earn a personal message from the band, a token of appreciation for their dedication. Heart racing with excitement and determination, Mia felt it was her chance to truly express her feelings.

"Should I do it?" she asked herself, enthusiasm bubbling within.

"That voice won't be quiet unless you try," she responded, emboldened by her previous victories against negativity.

Mia spent the entire weekend creating her submission. Her video featured her singing a cover of one of Eclipse's songs, interspersed with clips of her practicing Korean while wearing her favorite Eclipse merch. She poured her heart into every note, intertwining her journey of learning the language with her love for Liam and the group. It was a heartfelt tribute—a testament to her commitment and passion.

Once she submitted the video, nervous excitement churned within her. She could hardly sleep, eagerly refreshing the website to see if her entry was marked as received.

Weeks passed, and while waiting for the results, Mia continued her routine of language lessons and working at the café, each day filled with hope and anticipation. But the world of K-Pop had its ups and downs. Rumors continued to circulate about Liam's personal life, and on particularly rough days, Mia found herself battling insecurities. "What if he really does prefer someone else?" she would whisper, sinking into her bed with frustration.

In a moment of despair, she confided in Jasmine, who had always been her encouragement. "I keep seeing the photos of Liam with that girl, and I'm just... I don't know if I'm good enough."

Jasmine listened thoughtfully, understanding her friend's pain but firmly shaking her head. "Mia, you have to remember that you are amazing just the way you are. Liam doesn't know you yet, but he will. Your love is valid, regardless of who he is rumored to date."

As the results of the voting event approached, Mia felt both hope and dread. What if her hard work didn't pay off? She had poured her heart into the video, and uncertainty crept in on the eve of the announcement.

That night, lying in bed, she whispered softly to herself, "No matter what happens, I will continue to support him. I will learn Korean and grow stronger, no matter the outcome."

The following day, Mia awoke to her phone buzzing with notifications. Heart racing, she grabbed it, opening social media and holding her breath. To her astonishment, the post announcing the winners revealed her name among them.

"Mia Thompson! Congrats!" The words jumped out at her, disbelief washing over her. She had done it! Not only had she earned the opportunity to receive a personal message from Liam, but she was also encouraged to share her learning journey with the rest of the fandom.

Tears of joy streamed down her face as she leaned back against her pillows, the weight of self-doubt lifting.

As she prepared for the virtual event, Mia felt a surge of newfound determination. She realized her journey wasn't solely about winning Liam's heart or gaining his recognition but about accepting herself and embracing her passions.

The day arrived with excitement crackling in the air as she joined the online event, sharing her success with other fans and basking in a shared sense of achievement. When it was her turn to receive her personal message from Liam, she could hardly contain her jitters.

"Mia!" Liam's voice resonated through her speakers, and every nerve in her body fired in exhilaration. "I saw your video, and I appreciate your effort to learn Korean! That's amazing. We appreciate our international fans so much."

Time seemed to stand still as she listened to his words, feeling as if they were directlyaimed at her heart. "It inspires us to know how much you care. Keep working hard! I hope we can all connect more through our music."

Mia's heart soared at his encouragement, sending a wave of warmth flowing through her. She momentarily forgot the world outside her screen, lost in the connection she felt to him. After the event wrapped up, she sat staring at her phone, overwhelmed by the reality that Liam had acknowledged her.

As days turned into weeks, Mia noticed a shift in herself. With every lesson, every song she learned, her confidence grew, radiating from within. She wasn't just a fan dreaming of a love story; she was a passionate individual who believed in her own worth. This newfound self-assurance transformed how she responded to the negative comments online. Instead of feeling the sting of rejection, she chose to remind herself of her own beauty and uniqueness.

Meanwhile, the rumor mill continued to buzz around Liam and the girl he was allegedly dating. But where once jealousy consumed her, Mia began to rise above it. She told herself the truth: "I am beautiful, strong, and deserving of love. True connections are built on understanding and respect, and I have that."

With each passing day, Mia maintained her resolve to learn Korean, diving deeper into the culture. She watched K-Dramas, listened to podcasts, and practiced with fellow learners online. She also gained a network of supportive fans celebrating these small victories together, sharing tips, excitement, and unfiltered love for their idols.

Soon, the day of the next concert in her city arrive.
