Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

The night sky enveloped the city with a dark feel as it depicted the danger that continued to lurk for Amelia, Dominic and Marco. The car that Dominic was driving drove slowly on a small road that looked deserted. Every time he rounded a corner, Dominic drove cautiously. Amelia sat in the front seat next to Dominic, occasionally looking back to make sure they weren't followed by Victor's son, while Marco remained silent in the back seat with his blank gaze as if lost in thought about his life in the future."I'm not even sure if we should just leave everything behind," Amelia said, breaking the silence. Her voice was low but there was a note of frustration in it. "We don't even know where we're going. We're like fugitives caught in the act of committing a crime."Dominic tried to focus on the road ahead, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "It's better to lose your hiding place than to lose your life, Amelia. Victor has already shown that he doesn't mess with those who try to destroy his life.""How did he find the hideout?" asked Marco at last, his voice almost a whisper. "I never even saw anyone following us."Dominic shook his head. "As you know, Victor has a vast network. He could have bribed someone to utilize the tracking technology, or even infiltrated a spy among us. That's not a difficult thing for him to do."Amelia came closer and looked at the map intently. "What if Victor finds out about Rebecca's plan? He won't stay silent if he knows that the evidence is already in his hands."Dominic looked at Amelia with sharp eyes. "We have to assume that he already knows. That's why I want us to be prepared for the worst that could happen."Marco, who seemed to be recovering from his shock, leaned against the wall and replied to Dominic's statement. "And what is the worst possibility, Dominic?"Dominic sighed deeply. "The worst possibility is that we have to face Victor head on. If that happens, we need to make sure he doesn't have a chance to escape."The clock ticked slower than usual, the atmosphere silent as Dominic decided to cut short their discussion and decided to get some rest. Amelia couldn't seem to close her eyes, she sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes staring out the window at the dark street. Her mind was full of questions and worries about her life. What would happen if they failed? What would happen to Dominic-and herself? What would become of his company?Suddenly, she heard a strange noise from outside her room. Amelia was instantly roused from her reverie, her body tensing up. She grabbed the hand of Dominic who was sleeping in the next bed and shook him gently."Dominic," she whispered. "There's something outside."Dominic woke up instantly with quick, alert movements. He grabbed his small pistol from inside his jacket and approached the window. Slowly, he peered out and took in the situation."There's a black car parked nearby," Dominic whispered. "That's no ordinary car."Marco who heard the commotion also woke up from his sleep with a pale-looking face. "They found us?"Dominic nodded. "It seems so. We should leave now."They hurriedly packed up their meager belongings and made sure nothing was left behind. Dominic opened the door very carefully, peering into the hallway and making sure it was safe before gesturing for them to follow him. They exited through the back door of the motel, moving in silence as they made their way through the dark, wild bushes. Dominic led at the front, utilizing his knowledge of the terrain to avoid the attention of anyone who might be keeping tabs on their whereabouts. However, when they almost reached the main road, a loud voice broke the silence of the night."Stop in place!"Amelia was silent for a moment, digesting the possibilities. "In that case, not only do we have to fight Victor alone, but we also have to fight the entire system he's built.""True," Dominic replied in a cold tone. "But that's not a reason for us to give up."The car they were traveling in finally pulled up to a small motel on the edge of a not-so-busy town. The old building looked abandoned with flickering neon lights that were only partially lit. Dominic had chosen the place on purpose-it was remote, and it was unlikely that Victor would look for him there."We'll stay here for a while," Dominic said as he handed some cash to the elderly receptionist who was almost asleep at the desk. "Don't ask for names. Leave no trace."Amelia and Marco nodded and followed Dominic into a small room that contained only two narrow beds and a battered wooden table. After locking the door and making sure everything was secure, Dominic began to formulate a plan for what they would do."We need to move quickly," he said as he unfolded the map he was carrying. "Rebecca is now the key to the success of our plan. If she manages to publicize the evidence, Victor will lose his main foothold, meaning our first step is somewhat successful. However, we also need to make sure her whereabouts are safe until this is all over."Amelia froze, she turned around and saw three men dressed all in black with guns in each hand, they were standing a few meters from her and ready to open fire at any moment.Dominic immediately pushed Amelia and Marco behind him. "Run now!" he called out.Amelia wanted to protest, but Dominic's stare left her speechless. She grabbed Marco's hand and started running away, leaving Dominic to face the gunmen alone.Dominic knew he had to think fast in this tense situation. With lightning speed, he took cover behind a nearby tree and pointed his gun at the men."Victor will not win!" he exclaimed before pulling the trigger. The first shot sent one of the men tumbling, but the other two immediately retaliated with a barrage of gunfire and managed to force Dominic to stay in cover.Meanwhile, Amelia and Marco continued to run as far as they could, their breathing ragged. Amelia couldn't stop thinking about Dominic who was probably now risking his life for them."We can't leave him," Amelia said at last, stopping in the middle of the road.Marco looked visibly panicked. "What are you going to do? If we go back, we'll all get caught! And die."
