Chapter 3 - The Last Rays of the Setting Sun

The three of them waited in line for about half an hour. During this time, four or five other people arrived behind them."Hello! Welcome to the Tower of Dawn. Please present your magnetic cards."The person who greeted them was a woman in her thirties. All of the people around her wore matching uniforms, giving the place a highly organized and disciplined vibe. Jack couldn't help but wonder how such a mysterious underground base could exist. The "magnetic card" she referred to was, of course, the black card in their hands."Are the three of you together?" she asked, glancing at Jack and the others."Yes," Jack replied."Alright. You can form your own team or join an existing one. Would you like to create a team or join one?" the woman asked.Jack turned around to look at Mike and Sakura. As he did, he noticed one of them was absent-mindedly filing their nails while the other was scanning the surroundings, clearly not paying attention to the conversation.Jack knew that with their skills, it didn't matter which team they joined, but for him, it was different. He needed teammates. There was no way he was going to let these two heavily armed individuals wander off."Well, let's create our own team," Jack said, cautiously testing the waters."Okay, please hand me the magnetic cards for both of them," the woman replied."Mike, Sakura, give me your cards. I'll register us," Jack said, handing the cards to the receptionist."Please name your team," she asked again."Well… since this place is called the Tower of Dawn, how about we call ourselves 'The Last Rays of the Setting Sun'?" Jack suggested, turning to Mike and Sakura."Sounds good," Mike said indifferently."That's quite poetic. I didn't expect you to be such a cultured guy, little brother," Sakura smiled and ruffled his hair, clearly approving of his choice."Alright, then! 'The Last Rays of the Setting Sun' it is!" Jack declared."Your team is now registered. If you have any questions about this place, feel free to consult the smart assistant in your dorm," the woman said, handing back their cards and opening the door to the hallway.Eventually, they were assigned to room 033 in Area A on the second floor. Following the signs, Jack made his way to the elevator that led to the second floor. As Jack entered the elevator and dragged his luggage in, he couldn't help but feel that the elevator was descending. This made him wonder: were the higher levels actually deeper underground?Upon reaching the second floor, they found the left side led to Area A, the right side to Area B, and in front of them was a spacious training hall that also housed the cafeteria and several vending machines. The cafeteria was bustling with people eating, while others were working out in the training area. The advanced equipment and facilities clearly provided a great environment for everyone.Following the directions, the three of them quickly arrived at their designated room. The room was fairly small, about 50 square meters. There were roughly a hundred rooms in both Area A and B, and with the addition of the hall, it seemed that the second floor covered around 10,000 square meters! To build something this large so deep underground would require not just significant financial backing but also government support. Jack couldn't help but admire the scale of this operation. He could only imagine what kind of massive force lay behind the Tower of Dawn. The room itself was quite decent. It had a private bathroom and four separate beds, indicating that a team could accommodate up to four members. There was also a display screen mounted on the wall, which Jack assumed was the "smart assistant" the receptionist had mentioned.Jack picked the middle bed, piled his luggage onto it, and activated the display screen.[Welcome to the Tower of Dawn. I am your intelligent assistant, Linglingyao. Feel free to ask me anything.]The voice of Linglingyao echoed from the display."Sakura, what exactly is this place?" she asked first.[This is the Tower of Dawn, humanity's last refuge.]"Huh? Last refuge for humanity? Are you saying the world's going to be destroyed?" Sakura asked with a hint of skepticism.[A global catastrophe is imminent. Humanity will become like walking corpses, but extinction is not inevitable.]Jack swallowed hard. Walking corpses? That sounded like zombies. As long as they weren't dead, zombies could mindlessly attack the living, feeding on flesh. Anyone wounded would be infected and eventually become one of them…"Linglingyao, why is this catastrophe happening? When exactly will it happen?" Jack asked, his curiosity growing.[Insufficient privileges. Unable to retrieve the primary cause of the catastrophe. The Tower of Dawn is currently in lockdown mode to ensure everyone's safety.]"Lockdown mode? Does that mean no one can leave, only enter? Sounds like a scam," Mike remarked."Sakura, how are we supposed to survive here?" Mike asked the assistant.[The Tower of Dawn has a fully independent survival system. You need not worry about food, clothing, or shelter, but you will need to pay with survival points.]"Survival points?" Jack's ears perked up at the mention of currency.[Survival points are the only form of currency in the Tower of Dawn. They are transferred using your magnetic cards. As the team leader, you will be able to allocate and use the team's survival points.]Jack realized that, during the team registration process, he had been automatically designated as the team leader."So, do you two have any objections?" Jack turned to Mike and Sakura, asking them directly. Both of them shook their heads, signaling no objections. Jack was taken aback—was it really that simple? Did they trust him that much? Or were they just not concerned?"Aren't you worried I might scam you?" Jack asked, teasing them a little."Ha... If the team leader were this old guy here, I'd have a problem with it. But since it's little brother, I have no objections," Sakura said, laughing as she ruffled his hair."Do either of you want to be the leader?" Jack asked, just to make sure."It doesn't matter who leads, we'd have an issue with either of us being in charge," Mike said. "So, you take it. It's fine.""Oh… well, alright then…" Jack replied, somewhat surprised."At least we can take care of you whenever we need to," Mike added nonchalantly."Ha… that's pretty direct," Jack said with a bitter smile."Hmph, old man, what's with that? You're scaring little brother!" Sakura jumped up and pulled Jack to the bed. After they both sat down, Sakura put her arm around his shoulder, adopting a protective attitude."Don't worry, little brother. I won't let the old man bully you. But… you'd better be nice to your sister," Sakura said, her voice tinged with playful menace.Jack nodded vigorously, though he was still processing the bizarre situation. One of her hands was around his shoulder, and the other was twirling a knife in front of him, skillfully flicking it in the air like she was showing off her moves. It was a little unsettling. He never imagined that he'd end up in a room with two armed strangers, let alone have such intimate interactions with them."Uh, Sakura, Mike, we've had a busy day. How about we grab a bite to eat? Haha..." Jack laughed awkwardly. Everything had happened so suddenly that he was still trying to catch up.To break the ice, Jack stood up and took out the food he had bought from the supermarket. He placed it on the table, hoping to offer a meal as a gesture of goodwill.
