Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Price of Trust

The rhythmic clang of Kael's Masterwork Hammer echoed through the Ironclad Clan's camp as he worked tirelessly on the damaged storage sheds. Each strike drove a nail deeper, each swing reinforced a weakened wall. He could feel the familiar pull of creation, the satisfaction of transforming broken structures into something strong and reliable. Sir Gareth, despite his lack of Builder skills, assisted where he could, carrying lumber, organizing materials, and offering words of encouragement. The Ironclad Clan members watched them with a mixture of curiosity and respect. They had seen Builders before, but Kael's efficiency and the almost magical way the structures seemed to mend themselves were particularly impressive.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the camp, the storage sheds were as good as new, perhaps even stronger than they had been before. Kael stepped back, surveying his work with a sense of accomplishment. Anya approached, her expression unreadable.

"The sheds are repaired," Kael said. "We've done what you asked."

Anya nodded slowly. "Indeed, you have," she acknowledged. "You're skilled, Builder. And your… companion… is a capable warrior."

Sir Gareth stood beside Kael, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword. He met Anya's gaze steadily.

"We offer more than just skills," Kael said. "We offer loyalty. We're looking for a place to belong, a cause to fight for. We're willing to earn your trust."

Anya considered this for a long moment, her eyes scanning both men. "Trust is earned, not given," she said finally. "We've seen what you can do. Now, let's see what you're willing to do."

She turned to one of her lieutenants. "Prepare a patrol," she commanded. "We're going beyond the walls."

Kael and Sir Gareth exchanged a look. This was it. Their opportunity to prove themselves.

The patrol consisted of Anya, Kael, Sir Gareth, and four other Ironclad warriors. They left the camp just after nightfall, the gates creaking open to reveal the darkness beyond. Their destination was a nearby abandoned village, rumored to have been a source of supplies before the Eclipse.

As they moved through the ruined streets, the silence was unnerving. Every shadow seemed to conceal a lurking monster, every rustle of wind sounded like a whispered threat. Kael could feel the tension in the air, the anticipation of danger.

"The village is just ahead," Anya said, her voice low. "Stay alert. There have been reports of mutated scavengers in the area."

They reached the outskirts of the village, a cluster of crumbling houses and overgrown shops. Anya signaled for them to stop.

"Kael," she said. "Use your… Builder senses. See if you can detect any signs of danger, any hidden resources."

Kael closed his eyes, focusing his attention. He could feel the subtle energy of the System flowing through him, enhancing his senses. He could see the faint outlines of resources – piles of lumber, scattered stones, even the remnants of metal tools. He could also sense… something else. A faint, almost imperceptible tremor in the air. A sign of movement.

"There's something ahead," he said, pointing towards a darkened alleyway. "Several… creatures. Mutated scavengers, I think."

Anya nodded. "Sir Gareth, you're with me. The rest of you, flank them from the left."

The patrol moved into position, surrounding the alleyway. Anya gave the signal, and Sir Gareth charged forward, his sword flashing in the moonlight. The mutated scavengers, grotesque creatures with elongated limbs and sharp claws, emerged from the shadows, hissing and snarling.

The battle was short but brutal. Sir Gareth, a whirlwind of steel, cut down the creatures with practiced ease. Anya and the other Ironclad warriors provided support, their spears and axes finding their marks. Kael, despite his lack of combat training, used his ingenuity to help. He noticed a loose pile of rubble and, using his Builder abilities, caused it to collapse, trapping one of the scavengers.

Within minutes, the creatures were defeated. The alleyway was silent once more, save for the panting of the warriors.

"Good work," Anya said, her voice impressed. "You fought well, both of you."

They continued their search of the village, finding several caches of supplies – food, tools, and even some spare weapons. As they were about to leave, Kael noticed something unusual. A small, wooden chest hidden beneath a collapsed floorboard.

**[Discovered: Sealed Chest]**

He pointed it out to Anya. She ordered her warriors to open it. Inside, they found not gold or jewels, but something far more valuable: blueprints. Blueprints for advanced structures, far more complex than anything Kael had seen before.

**[Acquired: Advanced Building Blueprints]**

Anya examined the blueprints, her eyes widening. "These are… valuable," she said. "They could significantly enhance our defenses."

Kael nodded. "They could also help us expand," he added. "Build new structures, create a stronger, more resilient settlement."

Anya looked at Kael, a hint of respect in her eyes. "You've proven your worth, Builder," she said. "You and your companion. You're welcome to join the Ironclad Clan."

Kael and Sir Gareth exchanged a look. They had earned their trust. They had found a place to belong. But Kael knew that this was just the beginning. The world was still full of dangers, and the mysteries of the System were still waiting to be uncovered. He had a feeling that his journey had just taken a significant turn, and the challenges ahead would be even greater than anything he had faced so far. The price of trust had been paid, but the true test was yet to come.
