Chapter 40 - The Dawn of a New World

Lena slowly opened her eyes. Her head was pounding, and her limbs felt like lead, but there was no denying it—the battle was over. She was lying on the cold, cracked floor of the facility, the remains of the [System] around her. The entire control room was destroyed, and the once all-powerful network of the [System] was now nothing more than a smoldering heap of metal and circuitry.Elias groaned beside her, slowly sitting up. He looked around, blinking in confusion, then met her gaze. His face broke into a tired but relieved smile. "Did we do it?"Lena nodded slowly, pushing herself to her feet. "I think so."She glanced around at the wreckage—the signs of their final stand against the [System]. The successor was nowhere to be seen, presumably lost in the explosion. And with the core destroyed, the network's influence was completely severed.[System]: "Global systems shut down. Network access terminated.""Looks like we did," Lena whispered. "The [System] is finally gone. But now… now we have to rebuild."Elias nodded, brushing off the dust from his clothes. "We've won. But the real work starts now."Lena's eyes wandered to the ruined map of the world on the wall. The lines of control were gone. The cities were still in ruins, the chaos of the past still fresh in memory. But now, for the first time in a long while, there was hope."Where do we even start?" she asked quietly.Elias thought for a moment. "We start by helping the people. Rebuilding communities. Spreading the word that they're free, and that there's hope again."Lena smiled faintly. "Yeah. A new world, one step at a time."
