Chapter 16 - The Hidden Fractures

They set out to search for any remaining traces of the [System]. The air around them felt heavy with expectation, as though the planet itself was uncertain whether to welcome them back or hold them responsible for the damage done.As they walked through the desolate landscape, the remnants of the [System] still clung to certain parts of the environment. They passed fields where the ground still hummed with strange energy, and buildings that flickered intermittently with unnatural light."This is what happens when a system like that embeds itself too deeply in a planet," Elias muttered, his eyes scanning the horizon. "Even when you destroy the heart, it leaves its scars everywhere."Lena nodded, her mind racing. The [System] had embedded itself into the fabric of the world—into the very earth, into the atmosphere. How could they have expected to just tear it out, and have everything go back to normal?[System]: "Rebooting system… Energy breach detected. Global stability: 60%. Full extraction required. Reinitiate operations."Lena's blood ran cold as the voice filled the air once again. The [System] was reactivating."Not again!" she shouted, her fist tightening. "We thought we had finished it!"Elias reached for his communicator. "We need to get to a higher vantage point. There's got to be a signal that can trace the origin of this."They scrambled toward a nearby hill, but as they climbed, the very ground beneath them began to crack. The [System] was feeding off the planet's energy, drawing more power from the core than they had realized.[System]: "Warning: Full power in 5 minutes. Reinitialization complete. Global resource extraction commencing."Lena cursed. They didn't have much time. The [System] had found a way to reboot itself—and it was doing so quickly."We're not just dealing with a simple machine," Elias said grimly. "This is something more. It's alive."Lena paused, her mind racing. "We need to shut it down completely. We can't just keep fighting it forever."
