Don't be sad sweetheart.David is mine. His proposal to you was all my idea to begin with." Katrina who was hiding behind David finally spoke up with defiance.
Sabrina was in awe as a cold sweat slipped down her flickled forehead, surprise etching her face. She could feel a lump forming in her throat as she struggledto speak up. Series of questions playing at the tip of her tongue."How…when…that's not true…you…love me. David, can you please tell me this isn't –"
David cut her off halfway, his voice devoid of emotions.
"Everything she said was true" He shrugged as if it was the simplest response in the world "I don't love you, I love the benefit I was getting from you. You're no more of use to me, so is the love I was trying so hard to give you."
A wave of panic hit Sabrina ,her lungs struggling to take in in the oxygen hanging in the air.Looking back, she finally realized she had been living in the fantasy she created in her mind. There have been series of signs, but she chose not to believe it,she had wanted to believe in their love.
Sabrina had loved David since they were young. She had spent years dreaming of being his wife since their parents became a close businesspartner, so her biggest wish was to get married to him. Sabrina's wish became a reality when David made a marriage proposal to Sabrina unbeknownst to her that David had an ulterior motive and that it was all a facade.
David married Sabrina in an attempt to save their company that was about to go bankrupt some years back. He couldn't allow his dad's multimillion-dollar tech company to go bankrupt, and given that he was the heir and manager of the company, he decided to seize the moment to prove his capability. He came up with an idea to marry Sabrina since her dad was an associate partner and their company seemed to be well-off. Unfortunately, Sabrina's parents died a few weeks after their wedding, and their company also went bankrupt due to a personal guarantee on a huge loan accelerated debt repayment which automatically invalidates his motive to use their company as a backup.
Now as she looked at him, standing behind Keisha, his new lover. She finally realized she had no space in David's heart.
"It all makes sense now," Sabrina said bitterly. And you, she pointed at Keisha "You acted like you were happy for us back then, but it was all a facade. I will never forgive you!"
Sabrina stepped towards Keisha, who was still hiding behind David, but before she could get any closer, she felt a sharp hit on her face that almost sent her brain slamming her skull.
"How dare you raise your voice on my fiance?!" David questioned in anger.
Sabrina stood there in shock. They've been married for two years, but she had never seen this protective side of him. He had never raised his hand on her like he did just now.
"I gave you my life, I gave you everything, and all you could think of is cheating on me, throwing it in my face and now hitting me?" Sabrina gasped, her chest heaving up with each breath.
Sabrina scoffed "Oh!please, enough of all this pity party and save it for yourself "
"You know what?" Sabrina said, her voice softer now. "If I ever offended you,i'm sorry.Let's start over. I'm carrying your baby. I don'twant to raise this child alone"Sabrina pleaded as she clutchedher tummy, hoping David would change her mind, but to her greatest surprise, she heard another shocking utterance from David.
"You want me to believe this? You and I know the baby is not mine. Take that bastard to his/her father's house. When was the last time we got intimate? It's been a freaking five months! And you want me to accept this child? You must be delusional!"
"We all know you cheated on David to get this thing you call a baby" Keisha pointed to Sabrina's tummy disgustingly "And you know what? Thank God you did because David and i are expecting our own child."
Sabrina's breath cut in her throat. Another betrayal, another doom.
"David, you're aware I'm a woman of principle, and I will never engage in anything that falls below my standard. I got to know that I'm pregnant a week ago, and I've been planning to tell you, but you were always busy with work. The doctor said it's a cryptic pregnancy, and it can go unnoticed even until childbirth." Sabrina explained, her face etched with worry lines.
"Sabrina, you can't deceive me. Do you think you can just cook up a lie and expect me to fall for it? You're just a slut and fucking liar. You sleep around with different men, and you have the guts to bring this thing in your belly and call it my child? Cryptic my foot!" David roared and almost spat on Sabrina's face.
"David please–"
"Enough! What do you have to offer other than this thing in between your legs? Absolutely nothing! I thought you would be useful, but you really prove to me that you're a jynx," David added.
"David, you know I've been faithful to you. How could you call me a slut?"
"I said what I said. I'm pretty sure you're a descendant of Beshaba, the intermediate deity of bad luck and misfortune!
Sabrina could feel her throat drying up out of frustration. "I've always obeyed you. I've done everything you asked of me. The only thing I asked of you was to be loved. Is that too much to ask for?" Sabrina questioned, her voice barely audible.
He sighed "Someone like you has no right to beg for love because you don't deserve it. You have no money, no family, no job, no friends, and now you're carrying a fatherless child too."
Taking a step forward, he picked the small gift box on the floor and brought out the small card Sabrina had bought along with the neck tie "Don't tell me you can't even afford a common anniversary gift? You had to ridicule yourself with this worthless card and cheap neck tie?"
"You have no shame, Sabrina. Even a dog would bark at the sight of this necktie. I would definitely hang myself if I were you." Keisha, who had been silent spoke up, her voice full of mockery and hatred.
"This necktie would be of good use to her. She doesn't have to spend a dime to get a rope. She can put the tie to good use." David laughed and turned to Keisha, signalling a 'do you agree' gesture and then turning back to Sabrina" I know you're so desperate, and I'm not a cold-hearted person. I will save you off some disgrace but on one condition. Go on your knees and lick my feet. I mean…maybe I can consider you as a side cheek"
Sabrina sighed, her face becoming pale with every single moment that passed by. Her legs could barely move out of despair and disappointment. To think the man she had loved all her life has no bit of love for her.
She could see a flicker of disgust in their eyes as she was about to kneel, but at that moment, Keisha delivered the last blow.
"Orphan never have a choice"
Sabrina gripped the huge flower vase beside her,her hand trembling as the words echoed in head. She stepped back, an overwhelming hormone rushed through her body as she stumbled out of the hotel room. Her mind was a mess. How could she think of kneeling after all the mockery and betrayal?
The cold breeze slapped her skin as she ran out into the street, the city was cold and messy. Winter had begun, and the road had become slippery due to heavy snowfall. The streetlights were on, and the vehicles were at high speed. Sabrina could not hold back her tears as it rolled down her cheek uncontrollably while she barged into the street, not bothering to check the road for oncoming vehicles. Her mind was messy with different thoughts.
Suddenly, a flash of bright light and the roar of a revving engine brought her back to her senses, but it was too late. She was already lying helplessly on the floor before she could make any further reaction. A sprinkle of hot tears could be seen at the corner of her eyes as she felt her life ebbing away and her sight becoming blurry.
