Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Forbidden Document

The night sky over Ravenshire was a canvas of shadows, painted with streaks of fog that rolled in from the nearby river. The city's ancient buildings loomed like silent sentinels under the dim glow of flickering streetlights. It was the kind of night where even the air felt heavy, as though it carried secrets too dangerous to be spoken aloud.

Inside his cramped apartment on the fifth floor of an old brick building, Adrian Carter sat hunched over his laptop. The room was cluttered—papers scattered across his desk, empty coffee mugs stacked precariously on the edge, and a corkboard covered in photos, sticky notes, and red string connecting seemingly unrelated pieces of information. His eyes were bloodshot from hours of staring at the screen, but he couldn't stop now. Not when he was so close.

Two days ago, everything had changed.

It started with an anonymous email—a single line of text that read:

"If you want the truth, meet me at The Rusty Anchor at midnight."

Adrian had hesitated at first. Anonymous tips were nothing new in his line of work, but this one felt different. There was no name, no signature, just those few words that seemed to burn into his mind. He knew better than to trust strangers, especially in a city like Ravenshire, where corruption ran deep and danger lurked around every corner. But something about the message gnawed at him. Maybe it was the tone, or maybe it was the fact that he'd been chasing leads on government conspiracies for years without finding anything substantial. This could be his chance.

The Rusty Anchor was a dive bar located on the outskirts of town, far enough from the city center to avoid prying eyes. When Adrian arrived, the place was nearly empty save for a few drunks nursing their beers and a bartender who barely glanced up from his phone. He spotted the informant immediately—a hooded figure sitting alone in the darkest corner of the room.

"You're late," the figure said as Adrian approached, their voice low and gravelly.

"I don't appreciate being summoned like this," Adrian replied, sliding into the seat opposite them. "Who are you? What do you want?"

The figure ignored his questions and slid a small USB drive across the table. "This contains everything you need to know. Don't open it here. And whatever you do, don't trust anyone."

Before Adrian could ask anything else, the figure stood up and disappeared into the night, leaving him with more questions than answers.

Back in his apartment, Adrian stared at the USB drive now plugged into his laptop. His heart raced as he clicked on the file labeled "Black Files.pdf." The screen flickered momentarily, and then rows of data began to appear—names of powerful politicians, classified locations, and detailed records of illegal experiments conducted by shadowy organizations. It was overwhelming, but one thing was clear: this was bigger than anything he'd ever uncovered before.

Just as he started reading, the screen went black. A robotic voice echoed through his speakers:

"You have accessed something that was meant to remain locked."

Adrian froze, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. The lights in his apartment flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Then came the sound of footsteps—slow, deliberate, and heading straight for his door.

Someone knew he had seen the file.

He grabbed his phone, trying to call Melissa, his tech-savvy friend who often helped him with investigations. No answer. The knocking on his door sent a chill down his spine.

"Mr. Carter, open the door," a deep, authoritative voice demanded.

Adrian's mind raced. He reached for a pen on his desk—not for writing, but because it concealed a small hidden blade he always carried for protection. As he crept toward the door, he peered through the peephole. Two men in black suits stood outside, their faces obscured by caps and dark sunglasses.

There was no escape. Or was there?
