Chapter 2 - Sentinel, Deviant, and Outsider

The five arrived at the Deviant underground base of Cavity City, located about 50 km from the outer borders of Terrane City.

The five people came with the sole purpose of helping to defend the Terrane city from destruction.

But, seeing the lack of support from the sentinels made Noah abort the mission —Captain Deviant Cavity.

"They're asking for our help, but none of them want to help us! What the hell is that? Do they think we're mortars?!" snapped Johnson, a well-built man with a shaved head, good with a mace.

"You've been a Deviant for ten years; you should know what Deviant means to Sentinels," Yena explained.

"I know it. But aren't they the ones asking for help? If this is the case, we shouldn't be helping them anymore!" said Johnson.

He turned his head to the side and looked at Mark, who was still sitting quietly in the metal seat of the helicopter carrying them.

From the look in Johnson's eyes, Mark wasn't too upset with the Sentinel's attitude.

"I'm sleepy! Can you guys be quiet for the rest of the trip?" asked Mark, yawning occasionally and not feeling bad about the sentinels' behavior towards Deviant.

Lydia was still sitting in the chair. She looked to the side, precisely at the boy who was lying on the helicopter seat. Sam's head was resting on Lydia's thigh.

"What? How can you be that casual when—"

"Shut your mouths!" interrupted Noah, sitting in the front seat, glancing sharply at the members in the back.

"You're the senior members. You should already know the different attitudes of these two groups of survivors," Noah explained.

"I don't want to hear any complaints!"

"Okay."

Noah nodded. He looked at Lydia, who was sitting with the injured boy.

"How is he?" Noah asked Lydia.

"That kick from the Integrity Sentinel was tough for a kid of his age. Some of his ribs were broken, we had to perform surgery on him," Lydia explained.

"Hmm... he's an outsider. It's difficult for him to be treated in the city if he's not registered as a citizen," Johnson replied.

"Can you perform emergency surgery?" asked Yena, turning her head.

Lydia shook her head. She could do it for minor surgeries on the hands and feet. But, where Sam's injury was located in the chest, there were many nerves connected to each other and vital.

"It's difficult to do with the current situation," Lydia replied.

Noah sighed. He pressed the system watch and brought up the navigation panel, which was displayed prominently on it.

Currently, the helicopter was on its way to Cavity to drop them off. Still, the Cavity authorities would inspect the helicopter, and if they found any intruders —Outsiders— they would punish the people involved and throw the outsiders out of the city.

"Bringing him to Cavity would be like letting him die," Noah replied.

"Just leave him in the forest; the death of outsiders is nothing to mourn," Yena emphasized.

Noah squinted when Yena said, "We are Deviants, not Sentinels. Our job is to save humans, not abandon them."

"I agree! I would never want to be a Sentinel like them. I'd rather live with rats and bugs than live with those terrible people," Johnson explained.

The team captain heard what Johnson said, and then an idea came to his mind after Johnson mentioned rats and bugs.

"Captain, change the flight route. We'll go to Gazelle," Noah explained.

"Gazelle?"

"Wait! Are you out of your mind? They're gonna rob us!" insisted Johnson.

"You guys don't worry. I know their leader; he will ensure our safety."

Gazelle was a small town built by an outsider community, with 10,000 people and some decent public facilities, including a hospital.

Since the city was built by outsiders, only outsiders were allowed to enter —Deviants and Sentinels were banned.

The location of Gazelle City was hundreds of kilometers away from Terrane City, so it was safe for them. Still, they had to be vigilant as they had two different enemies: Monsters and Sentinels.

Soon, a black helicopter flew near the cyberpunk-themed city. Several guards stood watch above with their RPGs.

But the chopper stopped going forward after the authorities at the gate wanted to confirm the visitor's identity.

"Tell Luthor, Noah's coming to visit!" declared Noah, speaking through the chopper's speakers.

"Noah?" several outsiders asked.

"He's a Deviant from Cavity. He's the one who saved my life twice," explained Luthor, a burly man with claw scars on his face, who had a creepy look.

Luthor was the leader of Gazelle City; everyone respected him, and no one dared to disagree with his words.

"Don't attack them. Let them in," Luthor stated, speaking to his aide.

"Okay."

The chopper landed on the city's helipad. Noah opened the door and stepped out with strong strides, accompanied by his frightened-looking members.

"I thought you weren't coming to visit," Luthor explained.

"I need your help," Noah said.

Noah turned around to reveal Lydia coming in with a young boy in her arms. Noah went on to explain the situation about the boy, saying that he needed surgery immediately.

"I thought you needed my help to destroy Terrane," Luthor replied.

He ordered his men to go take Sam to the hospital. Lydia went along to ensure the boy was alright, while Noah and the others went to Luthor's residence to accept his banquet.

It was about six hours of non-stop surgery. Finally, the surgery was successful, and the broken ribs had been returned to their original position; it was just a matter of time before he recovered.

"Is he an outsider?" asked the hospital doctor, Lydia nodded.

"Did you feel anything when you helped me with the surgery?" asked the doctor.

"What do you mean?" asked Lydia, confused.

"I've already been tested for magic talent. I don't have any magic in my body, but I can still feel the aura of magic," explained the man.

He pointed at Sam while his eyes continued to focus on Lydia. Lydia herself was still paying attention to Sam's face which had been bandaged in several injured parts.

"And him, he radiates his magic aura even though it's faint. He's not a random person," the doctor replied.

The door to the patient room opened, a female nurse came in and asked the doctor who was talking to Lydia to go check on another patient.

"Keep an eye on him."

Lydia was completely confused about the situation. In her opinion, one could die horribly if kicked with the magic power of an Integrity Sentinel. However, Sam showed different things.

He only suffered broken ribs and other injuries, successfully treated to not threaten his life.

"I don't understand," Lydia complained.

The door to the patient's room opened again, Yena came to tell Lydia that the chopper was about to leave.

Lydia was shocked because Sam had just finished surgery, and if she left, no one would accompany him.

"Forget about him. It's his fate; we can't keep him company," Yena replied, coming over and grasping Lydia's hand firmly.

The two stepped out of Sam's patient room door and left the 10-year-old boy lying unconscious alone in that place.

Time ticked away until it was midnight. Sam's body was glowing purple with a rising body temperature.

Sam whimpered in pain even though his eyes were still closed tightly in his unconsciousness.

His mouth gaped wide and seemed to release purple energy from his body. Sam's body temperature slowly returned to normal, and the pain all over his body disappeared.

The purple energy released from Sam's body transformed into a woman wearing a long black-purple dress; her hair was long and flowing with dark purple pupils.

She set her foot on the patient room floor, looking forward to Sam. The woman seemed to take a deep breath, then exhaled slowly.

"Finally, I'm free!"
