Chapter 20 - Chapter Twenty-One: The Burden of Power

The days blurred together as Ada's training progressed. Each one felt like a battle—against the power within her, against the fears that threatened to overwhelm her, and against the realization that she wasn't just fighting for herself anymore. She was fighting for everything her family had kept hidden, for the truth of who they were, and for the future that she could still shape.

But despite the progress she made in learning to control the power, there was a constant undercurrent of unease. It wasn't just about mastering the skills—it was about understanding the cost of what she was becoming.

Lena pushed her harder each day. The drills were intense, designed to strip away her doubts and make her confront the power head-on. It was grueling work, and it left Ada drained, both physically and mentally.

One afternoon, after a particularly difficult session, Ada sat on the floor of the training room, trying to catch her breath. Sweat clung to her skin, and her muscles ached. She hadn't realized how much of her energy had gone into the training until she stopped. It was as though her body was screaming for rest.

"You're doing well," Lena said, her voice calm, though there was no warmth in it. "But you need to push harder. This power isn't something that can be tamed by hesitation."

Ada wiped the sweat from her brow and nodded, but the words felt heavy. Push harder. Was there no end to the testing, to the demands? She didn't want to think about it, but the question lingered in her mind. What was the true cost of all this? Would she lose herself in the process?

Lena seemed to sense the shift in Ada's energy. She walked over and knelt beside her, her eyes sharp as they studied Ada's expression.

"You're worried about the power," Lena said, her voice softer now. "You're afraid of what it will make you. You're afraid of losing control."

Ada didn't answer at first. How could she? The fear was real. Every time she tapped into the power, she felt it take hold of her, like a tide that threatened to drown her. It was exhilarating and terrifying all at once.

"You're right," Ada finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm scared. I don't know if I can handle it."

Lena regarded her silently for a moment before standing up. "Fear is natural. It's what keeps you grounded. But you can't let it rule you. You have to trust yourself, Ada. Trust that you're stronger than you think."

Ada looked up at her trainer, her eyes searching for any sign that Lena might understand. But the woman's face remained unreadable, her expression a mask of determination.

"You have a legacy to uphold," Lena continued. "Your family wasn't just any family. They were part of something greater. And that greatness is now yours. Whether you like it or not, this power is your responsibility. And it's not something you can run from."

The words hit Ada like a punch to the gut. Responsibility. Legacy. All the things she had never asked for but was now bound to carry.

"I don't know if I'm ready for this," Ada admitted, her voice raw. "I don't know if I ever will be."

Lena's gaze softened for a fraction of a second. "No one is ever truly ready. But you will be. In time, you'll understand that this power isn't just a gift—it's a weapon. A weapon that can either destroy everything you love or protect it. You have to choose how to wield it."

Ada looked down at her hands, the weight of her family's legacy pressing down on her. She wasn't just learning to control a force. She was learning to live with the knowledge that she held the power to shape the world around her.

"Are you ready to take the next step?" Lena asked, her voice returning to its usual, commanding tone.

Ada hesitated. Could she ever truly be ready? She wasn't sure. But what choice did she have?

"Yeah," she said, standing up slowly. "I'm ready."

Lena's eyes flickered with something like approval, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. She motioned for Ada to follow her. "We're going to test you today. You've learned the basics, but now we need to see if you can control the power in a real situation."

Ada's heart began to race. A real situation? What did that mean?

They walked through the mansion, the silence between them thick with anticipation. Ada could feel her pulse quicken, her nerves tightening. She didn't know what Lena had in mind, but the seriousness of her tone left no room for doubt—this was going to be different.

Finally, they reached a large room at the back of the house. Unlike the sterile training space, this room was filled with strange, arcane symbols etched into the walls, glowing faintly in the dim light. In the center, there was a large pedestal with an ornate box resting on it.

"What's this?" Ada asked, her voice tight with apprehension.

Lena didn't answer at first. Instead, she walked to the pedestal and opened the box. Inside was a crystal—its surface smooth and reflective, pulsing with a faint light.

"This is a focus stone," Lena explained, holding the crystal up so that the light danced across the walls. "It channels your energy and amplifies it. But it also tests your control. If you can harness the energy of this stone without losing yourself, it will prove that you've mastered the power within you."

Ada's eyes widened. A focus stone. She had heard of them, but she didn't think she was ready for something like this. The power within her was already so unpredictable. What if she failed?

"You're going to try and channel your energy into the stone," Lena said. "When you do, you'll feel a resistance. It will push back. Don't fight it. Just focus."

Ada swallowed hard, her nerves flaring as she stepped closer. She could feel the pull of the crystal, the way it seemed to hum with energy, waiting for her to make the first move.

Taking a deep breath, Ada reached out, her fingers brushing the surface of the stone. Immediately, she felt a rush of energy flood through her. The power that had been lying dormant inside her surged to the surface, wild and untamed.

She gasped, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she focused, trying to steady herself. She remembered Lena's words—don't fight it. Flow with it.

The energy twisted and churned within her, like a storm inside her chest. But Ada kept her eyes fixed on the stone, her breathing steady as she focused on controlling the force.

For a moment, there was only the hum of the crystal and the pressure of the power coursing through her. Then, slowly, the energy began to settle. The chaos within her receded, and the stone's light grew brighter, responding to her control.

Ada exhaled slowly, her body trembling with the effort. She had done it. She had actually done it.

Lena nodded in approval, though her expression remained as stern as ever. "You're getting there. But this was just the beginning. There's more you'll need to learn. And it won't be easy."

Ada's hands shook as she pulled away from the stone, the weight of her accomplishment sinking in. She had taken a major step, but the path ahead was still uncertain. The power within her was growing, and with it, the responsibility she could no longer ignore.

But for the first time since she had stepped into this world, Ada felt a flicker of hope.

She wasn't just learning to control the power. She was learning to embrace it.
