From what I could see, the house I was in was small. I stepped out of my room, and in less than thirty seconds, I reached the outside door. The scene outside was snowy, with tall trees surrounding the house like sentinels."So, I'm either in the middle of nowhere, or my house is kind of like where Tanjiro's house is," I muttered to myself, a thin puff of mist escaping my lips in the cold air."I wonder if I live on my own," I mused as I shivered, wrapping my arms around myself. The biting cold was unbearable, even with what seemed like a sweater and long pants on. I quickly made my way back inside the house, slamming the door shut behind me to keep the chill out.The interior of the house was simple. There were three other rooms apart from mine—a kitchen, a bathroom, and another bedroom. Curious, I stepped into the bathroom, which was sparsely furnished. There was only a small mirror hung on the wall and a bath that doubled as a shower."Gosh, it seems I'm poor, maybe?" I sighed, shaking my head as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. The face that stared back at me was still my own, though I looked younger than I remembered. In my previous life, I had been seventeen, but according to the system, I was now fourteen. I touched my messy black hair as if to confirm it was really me.Something in the mirror caught my eye. Behind me, sitting against the wall, was a wooden chest."What's this?" I muttered, turning around and crouching next to it.The chest creaked as I opened it, revealing neatly folded clothes inside. They seemed to be my size, so I assumed they were mine."The real question is... why are they in the bathroom?" I muttered as I dug through the chest. My fingers brushed against a piece of fabric, and I pulled it out—a blue haori. It felt warm and cozy."This'll help," I said, sliding it on. It fit perfectly."Okay. Time for planning."I made my way back to my room and sat on the edge of the bed. The system appeared before me as soon as I summoned it."Are you able to talk, System?" I asked silently in my mind. The response was immediate.[Yes, Host. How can I help?]"Okay, it's one of these types of systems," I said out loud, breathing a sigh of relief. "I'd like to give you a name, System."[Sure. I do not have a name, and I would be grateful to be given one.]The system's voice was soft and feminine, which made me think for a moment."Female voice... soft tone... How about Trixy? It's simple, but it's the best I could come up with."[Trixy. I like that name. Thank you for naming me, Host.]"No thanks needed. Also, call me Amura."[Memorized.]The happiness in Trixy's voice caught me off guard. Could systems even feel emotions? If so, it seemed like Trixy did."Trixy, when do I get my first quest?" I asked, shifting my focus back to the matter at hand.[Quests start during random scenarios that happen to you.]"Ah, so basically, just as an example, if I were speaking to someone and they told me to do something, I'd get a quest?"[Yes, kind of.]"Okay, I've seen that in some fanfictions I've read."Just then, out of nowhere, a sharp, searing pain shot through my head."Ahh! What the fuck!" I screamed, clutching my head as I fell back onto the bed. The pain was overwhelming, but it vanished as quickly as it came, leaving me gasping for air."Trixy, what was that?!"[Calm down, Amura. If you try and remember now, you'll see that you've inherited the previous owner's memories.]I took a deep breath, closing my eyes as I focused. Slowly, unfamiliar memories began surfacing in my mind. The memories revealed that the original owner of this body was an only child. Their parents had been killed by demons, leaving them to be raised by their grandfather. Life had been difficult, but they managed to scrape by. They weren't destitute, but they were far from wealthy. As I processed this information, I heard footsteps approaching the front door.Opening my eyes, I walked out of my room and looked toward the entrance. Standing there, taking off his boots, was the man from the memories—my "grandpa.""You're awake, it seems," he said as he stepped inside, brushing snow off his jacket. He hung it on one of the kitchen chairs before sitting down."Yeah, gramps," I replied nervously, hoping I sounded natural. I had just skimmed through the memories to see how the original owner of this body addressed him.The old man didn't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary.I sat down across from him, hesitating for a moment before speaking."Gramps. I want to be a demon slayer," I said, my tone firm. His expression shifted from shock to seriousness almost instantly."Amura, do you know what you're saying?"So he does know about demons and demon slayers, I thought."Yes. I've made up my mind," I replied confidently."Well... I can't stop you. You're old enough to make your own decisions," he said, sighing heavily.Wait, I am? What even is the age of consent in this world? I thought to myself.Gramps stood up abruptly, walking toward his room without another word. I followed him, watching as he pulled back a rug to reveal a trapdoor in the floor. He opened it, reaching inside before pulling out an old sword."Here. You'll need this," he said, handing it to me.I took the sword, the weight of it feeling strange yet familiar in my hands. He gestured for me to follow him back to the kitchen, where we both sat down again. For the next several minutes, he explained the basics of what I needed to know: demon slayers, the Final Selection, and the dangers that awaited me. I was only half-listening, though, because part of my attention was on the system, which had updated with a new quest.-- Player --Quest: Get ready for Final Selection.

Oh, fuck yeah, I thought, grinning at the reward.Snapping out of my thoughts, I refocused on the old man just as he finished speaking."Okay. Then I'll be leaving," I said, standing up.The old man nodded, his eyes filled with a mix of sadness and pride.I returned to my room, quickly packing what little I had. My journey as a demon slayer was about to begin, and I was determined to make it count.
