Chapter 2 - Powers and Pizza Rolls

Lila Chen stared at the freezer door from her custom-designed floating couch, her brow furrowed in concentration. The events of yesterday still felt surreal—acquiring godlike powers, being declared the "Chosen One" by a holographic entity called The System, and discovering her ability to move objects with her mind. But right now, all that mattered was the bag of pizza rolls nestled in the icy depths of her freezer.

"Okay, supernatural mojo," Lila muttered, extending her hand dramatically. "Let's see what you can really do."

At first, nothing happened. The freezer door remained stubbornly closed, mocking her newfound abilities. Lila sighed, slumping deeper into her plush cushions.

"Come on," she grumbled. "I moved the remote yesterday. How hard can a freezer door be?"

She closed her eyes, visualizing the door swinging open. A soft click echoed through the apartment, followed by a rush of cold air. Lila's eyes snapped open to see the freezer door wide open, a ghostly mist spilling out onto the kitchen floor.

"Ha!" she exclaimed, pumping her fist in triumph. "Take that, laws of physics!"

Now came the tricky part. Lila narrowed her eyes, focusing on the bag of pizza rolls. It shuddered, then slowly rose into the air. She grinned, guiding it towards her with careful mental nudges.

"Easy does it," she murmured. "No need to rush perfection."

The bag hovered uncertainly, swaying in mid-air like a drunken balloon. Lila bit her lip, concentrating harder. Suddenly, the bag shot forward, narrowly missing her head and slamming into the wall behind her.

"Oops," Lila winced. "Note to self: telekinesis and momentum don't mix well."

Undeterred, she tried again. This time, the bag floated more smoothly, landing with a soft plop on the coffee table. Lila beamed, already envisioning the possibilities.

"Now, for phase two of Operation Snack Attack," she declared, eyeing the microwave across the room.

Over the next hour, Lila's apartment transformed into a telekinetic playground. Pizza rolls danced through the air in a chaotic ballet, narrowly avoiding collisions with floating cups and plates. The microwave door opened and closed of its own accord, while utensils pirouetted gracefully from drawer to table.

By the time Lila had perfected her mid-air snack retrieval system, she was breathless with laughter and more than a little impressed with herself.

"Not bad for a day's work," she mused, taking a bite of a perfectly warmed pizza roll. "I wonder what else I can—"

A sharp knock at the door interrupted her reverie. Lila froze, a half-eaten pizza roll suspended in front of her mouth.

"Lila?" her mother's voice called. "Are you home? We're coming in!"

Panic surged through Lila as she realized the state of her apartment. Plates, cups, and various snacks hung suspended in the air like some bizarre still life. With a frantic wave of her hand, she tried to return everything to its proper place.

The door swung open just as the last plate clattered onto the coffee table. Mr. and Mrs. Chen stepped inside, their eyes widening at the sight of their daughter lounging on a floating couch, surrounded by a sea of junk food.

"Hi Mom, Dad," Lila said weakly. "Uh... surprise?"

Mrs. Chen's hand flew to her mouth. "Lila! What in the world is going on here?"

Mr. Chen, ever the practical one, simply raised an eyebrow. "Is that couch... hovering?"

Lila glanced down, realizing she'd forgotten to lower her makeshift throne. "Oh, this old thing? It's just, um, a new ergonomic design. Very cutting edge."

Her father's eyes narrowed. "Lila Chen, what have you done to this apartment?"

"Nothing!" Lila protested. Then, reconsidering, she amended, "Well, maybe a few minor upgrades."

As if on cue, a stray pizza roll chose that moment to float past Mr. Chen's head. He yelped, swatting at it like an oversized, tomato-sauce-filled mosquito.

Mrs. Chen clutched her purse tighter. "Lila, please tell me you haven't gotten involved with... with black magic or something equally ridiculous!"

Lila couldn't help but laugh. "Black magic? Come on, Mom. This is way cooler than that."

To demonstrate, she casually waved her hand. The scattered pizza rolls rose into the air, forming a neat stack on a hovering plate. Another gesture, and the plate gently settled onto the coffee table.

Her parents stared, mouths agape. Mr. Chen was the first to recover. "This... this is what you're doing with your life now? Playing with food?"

Lila shrugged. "I prefer to think of it as 'optimizing my snack consumption efficiency.'"

Mrs. Chen sank onto the edge of the couch, which thankfully had settled back onto the floor. "But how? When? Why?"

"Would you believe me if I said a glowing hologram appeared in my living room yesterday and told me I was the Chosen One?" Lila asked.

Her parents exchanged worried glances. "Honey," her mother began gently, "have you been getting enough sleep? Eating properly?"

Lila rolled her eyes. "I'm not hallucinating, Mom. Watch this."

With a flick of her wrist, she opened the refrigerator door. Bottles and containers floated out, arranging themselves in a colorful mid-air display. Mr. Chen's eyes bulged as he watched a carton of milk pour itself into a hovering glass.

"This... this is impossible," he stammered.

"Apparently not," Lila grinned, taking a sip of the milk. "Pretty cool, huh?"

Her mother looked faint. "But what does this mean? Are you some kind of... superhero now?"

Before Lila could respond, a familiar shimmer filled the air. The System materialized in all its holographic glory, startling her parents into twin yelps of surprise.

"Greetings, family unit of the Chosen One," The System intoned. "I am here to educate you on the grave responsibilities that now rest upon your offspring's shoulders."

Lila groaned. "Not this again. Can't you see we're having a family moment here?"

The System ignored her, launching into what was clearly a pre-prepared speech. "As the wielder of cosmic powers beyond mortal comprehension, Lila Chen has been tasked with maintaining the delicate balance of the universe, averting catastrophic threats to reality, and guiding humanity towards a brighter future."

Mr. Chen blinked rapidly, looking between the hologram and his daughter. "I... I don't understand. Lila, what is this thing talking about?"

"Oh, you know," Lila said casually, using her powers to mix a smoothie in mid-air. "Save the world, fight evil, that sort of thing. Typical chosen one stuff."

Mrs. Chen clutched her chest. "But... but that sounds dangerous! And time-consuming! What about your future? Your career?"

The System perked up. "An excellent point! The role of Chosen One comes with numerous career advancement opportunities, including—"

"Yeah, yeah," Lila interrupted, waving her hand dismissively. The TV remote floated to her grasp, and she began flipping through channels telekinetically. "Save the sales pitch, glowstick. I told you yesterday, I'm not interested in the whole world-saving gig."

Her father's face reddened. "Lila Chen! You can't just ignore a sacred duty like this!"

"Watch me," Lila replied, settling on a rerun of her favorite sitcom.

The System's holographic form flickered with what might have been frustration. "Perhaps a visual demonstration of the threats facing our world will impress upon you the urgency of your calling."

Suddenly, the air was filled with holographic projections of disasters both natural and supernatural—raging infernos, howling storms, and creatures that defied description rampaging through city streets.

Lila yawned, casually manipulating her powers to create a force field around herself, blocking out the alarming images. "Nice special effects, but I've seen better on streaming."

Her parents, however, were less nonchalant. Mrs. Chen let out a strangled gasp, while Mr. Chen's face had gone from red to an alarming shade of purple.

"Lila!" he bellowed. "You have to do something about this!"

She sighed, reluctantly pausing her show. "Fine, if it'll make you happy."

With a wave of her hand, Lila dispersed the holographic horrors, replacing them with a soothing image of a tropical beach. Gentle waves lapped at pristine sand, while palm trees swayed in a phantom breeze.

"There," she said. "Much better. Who wants a piña colada?"

The System's voice took on a note of desperation. "Chosen One, please. The fate of countless worlds hangs in the balance. You must accept your destiny!"

Lila pretended to consider this for a moment. "Hmm... Nah, I'm good. But hey, if the universe is still in danger after this season finale, maybe I'll reconsider."

Her mother buried her face in her hands. "Where did we go wrong?"

Mr. Chen opened his mouth, likely to launch into a lecture, when a knock at the door interrupted him. Lila's face lit up.

"Oh, good! That must be Dennis with my pizza."

Before anyone could react, she used her powers to swing open the door, revealing a startled Dennis clutching a pizza box.

"Uh, hey Lila," he said, peering around her floating parents and the flickering hologram. "Everything okay in here?"

Lila grinned. "Never better! Come on in, Dennis. You're just in time for the show."

Dennis stepped inside cautiously, his eyes widening as he took in the scene. "Whoa. Did I miss something? When did your apartment turn into a sci-fi movie set?"

"Oh, you know," Lila shrugged. "Just acquired some godlike powers, became the Chosen One, disappointed my parents. The usual."

To demonstrate, she levitated the pizza box out of Dennis's hands, floating it over to the coffee table. Dennis's jaw dropped.

"Holy pepperoni," he breathed. "You weren't kidding about the powers thing."

Mr. Chen seemed to have finally found his voice again. "Young man, please tell my daughter that she can't waste her gifts like this!"

Dennis scratched his head. "I mean, I deliver pizzas for a living. Who am I to judge how someone uses their superpowers?"

Lila beamed at him. "See? Dennis gets it."

The System's hologram flickered again, its voice taking on a pleading tone. "Chosen One, I implore you to reconsider. The multiverse needs you!"

"And I need to finish my show," Lila countered. "So unless the multiverse is planning to resolve this cliffhanger, it's just going to have to wait."

With a casual wave of her hand, she ushered her stunned parents and the protesting System towards the door. "Thanks for stopping by, everyone. It's been real."

As the door closed behind them, Lila turned to Dennis with a grin. "So, want to stay for pizza and witness some more miraculous displays of supernatural laziness?"

Dennis chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. "You know what? Why not. It beats delivering to normal houses."

As they settled in for an evening of telekinetic channel-surfing and mid-air pizza acrobatics, Lila couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. Sure, she might not be saving the world, but she was certainly revolutionizing the art of relaxation.

And really, wasn't that heroic in its own way?
