Synopsis
In a world where systems and powers are the norm, 20-year-old Lila has always been content with her mundane life. She spends most of her days lounging in bed, binge-watching TV shows, and relying on her parents for everything. Her motto is simple: why exert effort when someone else will do it for you? One ordinary morning, as Lila was lazily scrolling through her phone, a mysterious system suddenly appeared before her. The system declared that it would grant her an extraordinary power—a strength so immense that she could effortlessly move mountains or shatter the fabric of reality itself. Before she could even process this information, the system vanished as abruptly as it appeared. Overnight, Lila became one of the most powerful beings in existence. However, despite this newfound ability to change the world with a mere thought, Lila's nature remained unchanged. She still preferred to spend her days lounging around and avoiding any form of responsibility. As news of her incredible abilities spread rapidly across the globe, people began to seek out Lila's help—be it from desperate governments trying to solve global crises or villains aiming to exploit her power for their own gain. Despite these external pressures and expectations placed upon her shoulders (or rather on top of the blanket she snuggled under), Lila continued to prioritize napping over saving humanity. Her lackadaisical attitude often led to comical misunderstandings and unexpected outcomes when she did decide to act—usually because someone had managed to rouse enough interest in something trivial like pizza delivery or video game updates. However, beneath this façade of indolence lies an intriguing complexity: while others might see only laziness in Lila's actions (or lack thereof), they miss out on a profound resilience born from years of being underestimated by everyone around her. As time passes and more challenges arise that require at least some level of engagement from our reluctant heroine (if only because they threatened access to Netflix), we begin witnessing subtle shifts within Lila herself—small moments where duty clashes with desire; where perhaps there’s more depth beneath those sleepy eyes than anyone initially suspected. Will this unlikely savior ever rise above being just "the lazy girl with superpowers," or will she continue down a path where doing nothing becomes its own kind of revolution? In "The Indolent Empress," explore how one person’s unyielding commitment to doing absolutely nothing can inadvertently reshape destiny itself—and maybe even discover what truly defines strength along the way.

Chapter 1 - "The Chosen One (Would Rather Not)"

Lila Chen's apartment was a testament to the art of strategic laziness. Every square inch had been meticulously arranged to maximize comfort and minimize effort. The living room, which doubled as her bedroom, office, and entertainment center, was a masterpiece of ergonomic efficiency that would make NASA engineers weep with envy.

As the afternoon sun filtered through the carefully tinted windows, casting a soft glow on the room, Lila lounged on her custom-designed, multi-positional smart couch. The piece de resistance of her lazy paradise, it adjusted automatically to her body's needs, whether she was sitting up for a gaming session or sprawled out for a Netflix marathon.

Surrounding her were an array of screens, each perfectly positioned for optimal viewing angles. A 75-inch OLED TV dominated the wall in front of her, while smaller monitors flanked her on either side, allowing for simultaneous streaming, gaming, and social media scrolling. A holographic display hovered above, projecting her daily schedule – or lack thereof – in shimmering blue light.

Within arm's reach, a series of floating trays orbited her like obedient satellites. One held an assortment of snacks: a bowl of perfectly room-temperature nachos, a plate of pizza rolls kept warm by a built-in heating element, and a selection of candies organized by flavor profile. Another tray housed an impressive collection of remote controls, each programmed to control multiple devices with a single button press.

A mini-fridge hummed quietly beside her, its transparent door revealing a carefully curated selection of energy drinks, sodas, and chilled snacks. Above it, a state-of-the-art climate control panel maintained the room at a constant, blissful 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lila, dressed in her favorite oversized hoodie and fuzzy pajama pants, reached for her universal remote without taking her eyes off the screen. She was deep into season three of "Galactic Nomads," a sci-fi epic about interstellar wanderers searching for the perfect planet to call home. As she pressed play on the next episode, she couldn't help but smirk at the irony. Why search the cosmos when perfection was right here on her couch?

Just as the recap began to roll, a shimmering distortion appeared in the air above her coffee table. Lila blinked, wondering if she'd finally overdone it on the caffeine. The distortion grew, swirling into a vortex of light and energy until it coalesced into a glowing, translucent figure.

"Greetings, Chosen One," the figure intoned, its voice a mix of cosmic reverb and bureaucratic monotone. "I am The System, and I come bearing news of great import."

Lila paused her show and squinted at the apparition. "Uh-huh," she said, reaching for her energy drink. "And I'm the Queen of England. Nice hologram, though. Is this some kind of viral marketing thing? Because if so, you're interrupting my very important binge-watching schedule."

The figure flickered, its ethereal features contorting into what might have been exasperation. "This is no marketing ploy, Lila Chen. You have been selected by forces beyond mortal comprehension to wield power unimaginable. The fate of your world – nay, the entire universe – rests upon your shoulders."

Lila took a long sip of her drink, eyeing the figure skeptically. "Right. And let me guess, I have to leave my comfort zone, go on some grand adventure, and learn the true meaning of heroism along the way?"

"Well, yes, that is generally how these things—"

"Yeah, no thanks," Lila cut in, reaching for her remote. "I'm good right here. But hey, maybe try the apartment next door. I hear Dave's into that whole 'hero's journey' thing."

As she stretched to grab the remote, something extraordinary happened. The remote control began to vibrate, then slowly lifted off its tray. Lila froze, her eyes widening as the remote floated gracefully through the air and into her outstretched hand.

"Holy crap," she breathed, staring at the remote in disbelief. "Did I just...?"

"Yes, Lila Chen," The System said, a note of triumph in its voice. "You have begun to manifest your extraordinary abilities. This is but a fraction of the power you possess."

Lila looked from the remote to The System and back again. A slow grin spread across her face. "Oh, this is gonna be fun."

Ignoring The System's attempt to launch into what sounded like a pre-prepared speech about destiny and responsibility, Lila focused on her snack tray. With a flick of her wrist, she sent it gliding smoothly through the air, coming to rest perfectly on her lap.

"Lila, please," The System pleaded, its glow pulsing with urgency. "You must understand the gravity of your situation. You have been chosen to—"

"To revolutionize the couch potato lifestyle," Lila interrupted, her eyes gleaming with mischief. She concentrated on her smartphone, which obediently floated up from the side table. "Now, let's see what else I can do while I order some celebratory takeout."

As The System launched into an increasingly frustrated monologue about heroic destiny and world-saving responsibilities, Lila found herself in a state of multitasking bliss. With one part of her mind, she navigated her favorite food delivery app, assembling an order that would make a small army blush. With another, she experimentally flexed her newfound telekinetic muscles, causing various objects around the room to shift and float.

"...and the prophecy clearly states that the Chosen One must rise to meet the coming darkness," The System was saying, its voice taking on a hint of desperation.

"Mhm," Lila murmured absently, debating between extra cheese or extra pepperoni on her third pizza. "That's fascinating. Hey, quick question – does this whole 'Chosen One' gig come with any kind of expense account? Because I'm thinking of upgrading to the 'Deluxe Couch Potato' package on this order."

The System's glow flickered, as if it were taking a deep, cosmic breath. "Lila, please focus. The fate of billions hangs in the balance. Surely you must feel some sense of responsibility, some calling to use your powers for the greater good?"

Lila paused her ordering, looking thoughtful for a moment. "You know what? I do feel something." She closed her eyes, concentrating hard. Suddenly, the temperature in the room shifted, becoming the perfect level of cozy. The lights dimmed to an ideal viewing brightness, and her favorite playlist began to play softly in the background. "Ah, there we go. Ultimate comfort achieved."

As The System launched into another impassioned plea, Lila tuned it out, fully absorbed in exploring her new abilities. She found that with just a bit of concentration, she could manipulate objects with incredible precision. Her TV remote disassembled itself in midair, its components swirling in a complex dance before reassembling into a more ergonomic shape that fit her hand perfectly.

Next, she turned her attention to her snack situation. With a wave of her hand, she opened her kitchen cabinets from across the room, causing an assortment of chips, cookies, and candies to float out in a colorful parade. They arranged themselves neatly on floating trays, creating a snack constellation that orbited her couch.

"This is so much better than shooting lasers from my eyes or whatever," Lila grinned, plucking a perfectly cooled pizza roll from the air.

The System, which had been watching this display with what could only be described as cosmic horror, made one last attempt. "But Lila, think of all the good you could do! You could end world hunger, bring peace to nations, solve the climate crisis!"

Lila considered this for a moment, absently levitating her drink to take a sip. "You know, you're right. I could do all those things." She paused, and for a brief moment, The System's glow brightened with hope. "But here's the thing – that sounds like a lot of work. And if there's one thing I've perfected in my life, it's the art of avoiding unnecessary effort."

With a casual flick of her wrist, Lila caused her entire entertainment center to rise off the ground. The TV, gaming consoles, and sound system rearranged themselves into a more pleasing configuration, wires untangling and reconnecting themselves with eerie efficiency.

"Besides," she continued, "who's to say that my way isn't helping the world? Think about it – by staying here and not interfering, I'm not risking messing things up with some well-intentioned but ultimately disastrous intervention. I'm letting humanity solve its own problems. That's growth, right there."

The System's glow dimmed to a defeated flicker. "This... this is unprecedented. Never in the history of Chosen Ones has there been a candidate so... so..."

"Awesome? Innovative? Comfortable?" Lila suggested helpfully.

"Unmotivated," The System finished flatly.

Lila shrugged, not bothered in the slightest. "Hey, I prefer to think of it as 'selectively motivated.' Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some very important Netflix queuing to attend to. Feel free to stick around if you want – I make great commentary during binge sessions."

As if to punctuate her point, Lila's powers kicked into overdrive. The couch began to hover a few inches off the ground, achieving the perfect balance between support and softness. A cocoon of blankets rose up, wrapping around her with just the right amount of snugness. Her drinks, perfectly chilled, arranged themselves within easy reach, condensation beading on their sides but never dripping onto her blanket.

The System watched in a mix of awe and resignation as Lila crafted the ultimate lazy person's paradise. Screens adjusted to optimal viewing angles, the lighting shifted to reduce eye strain, and even the air itself seemed to carry the scent of freshly popped popcorn.

"Well," The System said after a long moment, "I suppose this is one way to use cosmic power. Perhaps... perhaps there is a lesson here about the nature of choice and free will."

"Totally," Lila agreed, not really listening as she scrolled through her watchlist. "Hey, do you think I could use these powers to automatically skip show intros? Because that would be a real time-saver."

The System's form began to fade, its voice becoming distant. "I... I will need to consult with the higher powers about this unprecedented situation. This may take some time."

"Take all the time you need," Lila called out cheerfully. "I'll be right here. Oh, and if you see any world-ending threats on your way out, feel free to give them my regards. And maybe a Netflix recommendation or two."

As The System vanished, leaving behind a faint smell of ozone and disappointment, Lila settled deeper into her supernaturally comfortable nest. She had to admit, this 'Chosen One' thing might not be so bad after all. Sure, she might not be out saving the world in the traditional sense, but who was to say that perfecting the art of relaxation wasn't its own kind of heroism?

With a contented sigh, she pressed play on her show, her new powers automatically adjusting everything to create the perfect viewing experience. As the opening credits rolled, Lila couldn't help but smile. The fate of the world might be in her hands, but right now, the only fate she was concerned with was finding out if the space pirates would finally discover the lost treasure of Andromeda Seven.

And really, in the grand scheme of things, wasn't that just as important?
