Chapter 14 - "Dreadful Echoes"

In the moment Juhyuk turns away, a wave of realization washes over him. As Namhyuk starts to drive forward, Juhyuk senses something. Swiftly, he reaches out, placing his hand on the car's surface, and softly utters, "Hyung, Namhyuk." Abruptly halting, Namhyuk questions, "Hey, calm down, what's wrong?" The air thickens with an unspoken tension, emotions swirling between them.

Juhyuk inquires, "Hyung, did we meet that day?" Namhyuk turns to face him, his countenance revealing a depth of seriousness, as though harboring a multitude of hidden secrets within.

Suddenly, his expression shifts, and he asks, "Which day are you talking about?" The air between them holds a palpable tension, an unspoken exchange of emotions lingering in the unsolved mysteries of their shared past.

Exhaling with a sigh, Juhyuk says, "It's nothing. Alright, bye. We'll meet again." Namhyuk bids farewell, "Goodbye, take care," driving away in the car. As Juhyuk steps into his home, he sighs, the weight of that day etched in his memory, emotions resurfacing in the quiet echoes of the past.

"He meticulously cleaned his house, even tackling the haunting stains on the bed sheets, pouring his heart into every scrub. Exhausted, he sank onto the wall, a mix of anguish and determination in his eyes. He desperately wanted all the memories to flood back, but the weight of the pain held them at bay. Juhyuk, in a moment of overwhelming despair, repeatedly slammed his head against the wall—each impact a cry for release. Finally, defeated, he closed his eyes, shutting out the world and its painful echoes."

"Namhyuk found solace within the walls of his farmhouse, enveloped by the company of his companions. While laughter echoed around him, Namhyuk sat on the sofa, his form resembling a silhouette of both presence and absence. As his friends animatedly shared stories, Namhyuk lay there, a picture of quiet contemplation. Unbeknownst to them, his peaceful exterior concealed the turmoil of traumatic dreams, remnants of a haunting past that gripped his slumber in a relentless emotional embrace."

"He sealed his eyes shut, capturing a momentary breath, then erupted from his seat. The forceful hurl of a partly-filled glass onto the side table resonated with the intensity of his mounting anger, his complexion transforming into a fiery hue. The unsuspecting friends, witnesses to this sudden storm of emotion, stood in stunned silence. Jiho, breaking the quietude, inquired, 'What happened all of a sudden?' In response, Namhyuk's eyes glistened with tears, his voice struggling to navigate the depth of the emotional turmoil within."

"Minjoon handed Namhyuk a glass of water, his eyes reflecting a delicate dance of concern and self-preservation as he cautiously asked, 'Brother, are you okay?' Namhyuk, after a thoughtful sip, responded with a guarded tone, 'I'm fine. Just keep your focus on your tasks.' Minjoon's expression held a subtle blend of worry and uncertainty as he commented, 'I was just asking casually.' Steering the conversation toward their collective unease, he added, 'By the way, there's something I've been meaning to ask. Sujeong is still in a coma. But if Juhyuk suddenly recalls everything, what should we do for ourselves?' Emotions hung in the air, entwined with a sense of self-preservation and the fragile nature of their shared anxieties."

Namhyuk's words paint a canvas of nonexistence, cautioning against delving into them to shield both your mind and mine from undue distress. Meanwhile, Minjoon's plea echoes, "But brother, the drug you gave them had its impact only once. No traces of drugs linger within them, and there's a relief in the fact that their memories remain untouched." These divergent perspectives emphasize the mysterious and the reassuring, as Namhyuk's enigmatic utterances stand in stark contrast to the comforting void of recollection that Minjoon describes in connection to the aforementioned drug.

Namhyuk's words drip with a sinister admission, "This is the twisted problem with this matter. I've been orchestrating these drugs myself, repeatedly allowing the weight of dark deeds to settle on my conscience." A malevolent aura surrounds the confession. "In the beginning, I meticulously crafted and tested them, deceitfully bestowing them upon my supposed friend. Yet, the aftermath unfolded a gut-wrenching reality – his recollection emerged after regaining consciousness." The emotional turmoil intensifies, weaving frustration into the narrative. "The drugs insidiously infiltrated his body, leaving an insidious mark. It's a maddening reality that he now languishes in jail, while Juhyuk, frustratingly untouched by the drug's effects, shows no signs of their malevolent presence." The narrative unfolds with a sinister tone, casting Namhyuk's actions into a darker and more frustrating light, revealing the ominous consequences of his deeds.

Juhyuk lay in trembling silence beneath his bed, fingers from each hand tightly pressed into both ears, desperately trying to drown out the overwhelming fear that consumed him. The palpable sense of dread lingered, an unrelenting force that he struggled to subdue. As minutes turned into an agonizing eternity, the lack of control over his emotions persisted, a tumultuous storm within. With every heartbeat, his anger surged, reaching new, turbulent heights, mirroring the chaos within his troubled soul.

He emerged from under the bed, a palpable frustration weighing on his shoulders as he whispered, "Enough, if you don't want to remind me of things, why show me your reflection?" The room, meticulously cleaned, stood as a testament to the turmoil within him. In a surge of emotion, he hurled the glass into the mirror, a cathartic release for the questions haunting him. "Why did all this happen to us?" he cried out, the echoes of uncertainty filling the air. Whatever happened, happened, but what happened, left a deep emotional wound that lingered in the quiet aftermath.

Minjoon's inquiry to Namhyuk about Juhyuk remembering everything dripped with an unsettling intensity. Namhyuk, his voice tinged with a chilling solemnity, responded, "I believe he won't remember anything. Juhyuk is so consumed by fear that, even if he desired, he couldn't recall anything." The air thickened with an eerie tension, as the weight of the conversation hinted at darker secrets and a pervasive sense of dread. The emotion-laden exchange left a lingering unease, an unspoken acknowledgment of the haunting shadows that surrounded them.

Namhyuk's voice, cold and calculating, cut through the air as he spoke to Minjoon about Juhyuk, "His fear, a relentless shadow, echoes as his most profound vulnerability. In the hypothetical realm where memories might reawaken, the tendrils of that fear would render him powerless, unable to jeopardize anything for us." Namhyuk's words painted a stark picture of Juhyuk's weaknesses, devoid of concern or empathy, as he revealed the calculated nature of their understanding of Juhyuk's predicament.
