Chereads / Manhattan After Midnight / Chapter 10 - A Moment Of Unspoken Truths

Chapter 10 - A Moment Of Unspoken Truths

A Moment of Unspoken Truths

(A gentle breeze sweeps through the park, rustling the autumn leaves. The lights of Manhattan shimmer in the distance, casting golden reflections on the East River. The city is alive, but here, on a quiet bench in Brooklyn Bridge Park, time slows down.)

Ethan sits with his elbows on his knees, fingers loosely clasped together, staring at the water. His usual confidence, the air of power that follows him everywhere, seems to have faded. Tonight, he looks… human.

Emily watches him carefully, sensing the weight on his shoulders. She's never seen him like this before. This isn't the Ethan Calloway that the world knows—the ruthless CEO, the man who walks into a room and owns it. This is someone else. Someone real.

She breaks the silence first.

EMILY (soft, curious)

"You're quiet. That's rare."

Ethan lets out a small, breathy chuckle, shaking his head.

ETHAN (low, almost whispering)

"Yeah, well… not every night you get caught kissing a supermodel and nearly lose your girlfriend in the process."

Emily raises an eyebrow, smirking.

EMILY (playful, but knowing)

"Oh please, like that's the first time you've screwed up with a woman."

Ethan turns his head to look at her, his lips curling into a half-smile. But there's something in his eyes—something distant, unreadable.

ETHAN (softly)

"No. But this feels different."

Emily leans back against the bench, looking up at the sky.

EMILY (thoughtful)

"You love her?"

Ethan exhales, a slow and measured breath.

ETHAN (honest, conflicted)

"I don't know." (pause, then a bitter chuckle) "I love the idea of her. Sienna's perfect. Beautiful. Successful. The kind of woman a man like me is supposed to be with."

Emily turns to him, her expression softening.

EMILY (gently, but firm)

"That's not love, Ethan. That's obligation."

Ethan scoffs, running a hand through his hair.

ETHAN (quiet, almost to himself)

"Yeah… maybe you're right."

For a moment, silence settles between them again. The distant hum of the city fills the air. Emily studies Ethan's face—the sharp jawline, the way the shadows dance across his features. But beyond all that, she sees something else. A boy who grew up too fast. A man who has everything but still feels like he has nothing.

EMILY (gently, with curiosity)

"What was it like? Growing up as Ethan Calloway?"

Ethan lets out a dry laugh, shaking his head.

ETHAN (sarcastic, but with an underlying sadness)

"Oh, you know. The usual. Private jets, boarding schools, a house so big you could go days without seeing another person." (pause) "Except, you never really wanted to see the people inside."

Emily tilts her head, listening closely.

ETHAN (quieter now, his voice more raw)

"My parents weren't parents. They were business partners who happened to have a kid. Everything was scheduled—my meals, my playtime, even my conversations with them."

Emily furrows her brows, heart sinking.

EMILY (softly, almost afraid to ask)

"So who raised you?"

Ethan's jaw tightens for a second, then relaxes. A small, sad smile tugs at his lips.

ETHAN (softly, nostalgic)

"Maria. My babysitter. She was the only person who ever made me feel like I mattered." (pause, then a small chuckle) "She used to sneak me out to get ice cream. Let me be a kid when no one else did."

Emily watches him carefully, sensing the ache behind his words.

EMILY (soft, but insistent)

"She loved you."

Ethan nods, swallowing hard.

ETHAN (whispers, almost as if he's realizing it for the first time)

"Yeah. She did."

There's a beat of silence before he continues, his voice dropping lower.

ETHAN (quiet, almost haunted)

"But when I turned fifteen, my father fired her. Said I didn't need a babysitter anymore. One day she was there… the next, she was gone. No goodbye. No explanation."

Emily feels a lump in her throat.

EMILY (gentle, but unwavering)

"That must've hurt."

Ethan laughs, but it's hollow.

ETHAN (bitter, but honest)

"You get used to people leaving when you grow up like I did."

Emily hesitates, then reaches for his hand. It's warm, slightly rough, but there's something vulnerable about the way he lets her hold it.

Ethan looks down at their hands, then up at Emily.

EMILY (soft, but firm)

"Not everyone leaves, Ethan."

Ethan exhales slowly, searching her eyes. And for the first time in years, he actually believes it.

Brooklyn Bridge Park – A Night That Changed Everything

(The city lights still twinkling in the distance, and the distant hum of Manhattan accompanies them. The autumn air feels cold, but there is warmth hanging between Ethan and Emily. They are still sitting on the park bench, closer than before, as if the world around them is fading.)

Ethan gazes at Emily, noticing how her eyes sparkle under the streetlight. All this time, he had been used to women who were perfect in every way—from appearance to attitude. But Emily... she was different. She was real.

Emily smiles slightly, playing with the ends of her hair.

EMILY (softly, a bit awkward) "I didn't expect to spend the night like this with the big boss, Ethan Calloway."

Ethan laughs softly, his eyes never leaving Emily's face.

ETHAN (teasing, but with a hidden sincerity) "So, this is a surprise?"

Emily nods, leaning back against the bench.

EMILY (seriously, but still casual) "Yeah. Because at the office, you're not someone who's easy to approach. Everyone sees you as the perfect man, flawless. But tonight... I see a different side of you."

Ethan stays silent for a moment, letting Emily's words sink in.

ETHAN (softly, almost whispering) "And what do you think of it?"

Emily looks at him, then smiles faintly.

EMILY (honestly, but with a teasing tone) "I think you're more human than I thought."

Ethan smiles slightly, then suddenly his hand moves, his fingers brushing Emily's cheek, slowly tracing the line of her jaw. Emily doesn't move, doesn't pull away.

There's something in their gaze—a pull that can't be explained.

Without realizing it, Ethan leans in closer, his eyes locking on Emily's lips.

Emily holds her breath, her heart racing faster.

And before she can think any further, Ethan's lips are on hers.

At first, it's soft, almost hesitant. But as Emily responds, kissing him back, it deepens.

The kiss is not just about passion. It's a spark of something they had both been unaware of—something real.

When they finally pull apart, Ethan looks at Emily with a softness in his gaze that wasn't there before.

ETHAN (almost whispering) "I think I like this."

Emily smiles faintly, her face still flushed.

EMILY (joking, trying to ease the tension) "Do you like the kiss or do you like me?"

Ethan chuckles, but his gaze remains intense.

ETHAN (seriously, but meaningfully) "Maybe both."

Emily laughs softly, then stands up.

EMILY (teasing) "I think it's time for me to head home before we do something even crazier."

Ethan sighs, then stands up as well.

ETHAN (raising an eyebrow) "Crazier than what?"

Emily looks at him with a playful expression.

EMILY (whispering, teasing) "Like falling in love with you."

Ethan looks at her deeply, but says nothing.

Only a faint smile plays on his lips as he calls a taxi for Emily.

When the taxi pulls up to the curb, Emily opens the door and then turns to look at Ethan one last time.

EMILY (softly, but with meaning) "Thanks for tonight."

Ethan nods, looking at her intensely.

ETHAN (softly, but with promise) "I'll see you again, Emily."

Emily smiles, then gets into the taxi.

As the car drives away, Ethan remains standing there, watching until the taillights fade in the distance.

For the first time in a long while, he feels something different. Something real.
