Chapter 3 - **Chapter 3: The Path of the Hunter**

The world was divided into three major regions, each with its own unique culture, governance, and challenges. The **Eastern Dominion**, where Kael lived, was a sprawling land of towering cities, ancient forests, and vast mountain ranges. It was a place where tradition and modernity clashed, where neon-lit skyscrapers stood alongside centuries-old temples. The Eastern Dominion was known for its strict hierarchy and its focus on martial prowess, making it a hub for demon hunters and warriors.

The **Western Federation**, across the ocean, was a land of technological marvels and sprawling deserts. It was a place where science and power intertwined, and where the strongest corporations ruled. The Western Federation was home to some of the most advanced weaponry and training facilities in the world, making it a popular destination for those seeking to enhance their abilities.

Finally, there was the **Northern Sovereignty**, a frozen wasteland of ice and snow. It was a harsh, unforgiving land, but one that produced some of the most resilient and powerful individuals in the world. The Northern Sovereignty was known for its fierce independence and its warriors, who were said to be as unyielding as the ice itself.

Kael's home was in the Eastern Dominion, in a city called **Eryndor**. Eryndor was a bustling metropolis, a place where the old and new coexisted in an uneasy balance. It was a city of contrasts—gleaming skyscrapers stood alongside crumbling slums, and the streets were filled with both the hopeful and the desperate. Eryndor was also home to one of the largest branches of the **Demon Hunter Association**, an organization that operated in every major city across the globe.

Kael stood outside the Eryndor branch of the Demon Hunter Association, his heart pounding in his chest. The building was an imposing structure, its sleek, modern design a stark contrast to the surrounding architecture. The symbol of the Association—a stylized sword crossed with a shield—was emblazoned above the entrance, a reminder of the organization's purpose.

Taking a deep breath, Kael pushed open the heavy glass doors and stepped inside. The interior was just as impressive as the exterior, with high ceilings, polished floors, and walls lined with holographic displays showcasing the Association's achievements. The air was filled with the hum of activity, as hunters of all shapes and sizes moved about, their voices blending into a low murmur.

Kael approached the reception desk, where a young woman with short, silver hair and piercing green eyes sat. She looked up as he approached, her expression neutral.

"Welcome to the Eryndor branch of the Demon Hunter Association," she said, her voice crisp and professional. "How can I help you?"

"I'm here to join," Kael said, his voice steady despite the nerves gnawing at him.

The woman raised an eyebrow, her gaze flicking over him. "Do you have a referral?"

Kael shook his head. "No. But I have a unique power."

The woman's expression didn't change, but Kael could see the faintest hint of skepticism in her eyes. "Very well. Follow me."

She led him down a series of hallways, past training rooms filled with hunters sparring and testing their abilities, until they reached a small, dimly lit room. Inside, a man with a stern expression and a scar running down the side of his face sat behind a desk.

"This is Kael Arashi," the woman said. "He claims to have a unique power and wishes to join the Association."

The man nodded, his sharp eyes studying Kael. "Sit."

Kael did as he was told, sitting in the chair opposite the man. The room was silent for a moment, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

"I'm Commander Ryker," the man said finally. "I'll be conducting your evaluation. Show me your power."

Kael hesitated for a moment, then activated the Shadow Interface. The translucent screen appeared in front of him, displaying his stats and abilities. Commander Ryker's eyes narrowed as he studied Kael, waiting for something to happen.

"Well?" Ryker asked, his tone impatient.

Kael realized that the interface was invisible to everyone but him. He needed to demonstrate his power in a way that others could see. Focusing on the Shadow Step ability, he felt the shadows around him come alive. With a thought, he teleported to the other side of the room, reappearing in a swirl of darkness.

Commander Ryker's eyes widened slightly, but his expression quickly returned to its usual sternness. "Shadow teleportation," he muttered. "Interesting. Very well, let's see what you can do."

He led Kael to a training room, where a series of holographic targets had been set up. "Your task is simple," Ryker said. "Use your power to hit as many targets as you can in one minute. Ready?"

Kael nodded, his heart racing. He focused on the Shadow Step ability, feeling the shadows around him come alive. With a thought, he teleported to the first target, his dagger slicing through it with ease. He moved quickly, using Shadow Step to dart from target to target, his movements a blur of speed and precision.

When the minute was up, Kael stood panting, his body trembling from the exertion. Commander Ryker studied the results, his expression unreadable.

"Not bad," he said finally. "You've got potential. But you're raw. Untrained. If you want to survive in this line of work, you'll need to learn discipline and control."

Kael nodded, his determination unwavering. "I'll do whatever it takes."

Commander Ryker studied him for a moment longer, then nodded. "Very well. Welcome to the Demon Hunter Association, Kael Arashi. You'll start at the lowest rank—E. From there, you'll climb the ranks by completing quests and proving your worth. Understood?"

"Understood," Kael said, his voice firm.

Commander Ryker handed him a sleek wristband, the **Hunter's Band**, which would track his progress and provide him with quests. "Your first task is to investigate a dimensional portal that's appeared on the outskirts of the city. The demons there are low-level, but don't underestimate them. Complete the quest, and you'll earn your first payment. Remember, it takes ten E-rank quest completions to promote to D-rank."

Kael nodded, his mind already racing with plans. He left the Association building, his thoughts focused on the task ahead. But before he could begin, he needed to prepare.

Kael spent the last of his money on new armor, a lightweight but durable set designed for mobility and protection. The armor was black, with subtle silver accents that caught the light, and it fit him perfectly. He also purchased a few basic supplies—rations, a first-aid kit, and a small, collapsible weapon for emergencies.

With his new gear in hand, Kael made his way to the outskirts of Eryndor, where the dimensional portal had been reported. The area was desolate, the buildings crumbling and overgrown with vegetation. The air was thick with an unnatural energy, and the shadows seemed to twist and writhe as if alive.

Kael activated his Hunter's Band, the holographic display showing the details of his quest.

Kael took a deep breath, his grip tightening on his daggers. The portal loomed ahead, a swirling vortex of dark energy that pulsed with a malevolent light. Around it, several demons patrolled, their grotesque forms a stark contrast to the eerie beauty of the portal.

These demons were known as **Grimlings**, small, humanoid creatures with razor-sharp claws and glowing red eyes. They were low-level threats, but dangerous in numbers. Kael counted six of them, their movements erratic and unpredictable.

He activated Shadow Step, disappearing into the shadows and reappearing behind one of the Grimlings. His dagger flashed, slicing through the creature's neck before it could react. The other Grimlings turned, their eyes narrowing as they spotted him.

Kael moved quickly, using Shadow Step to dart between the demons, his daggers a blur of motion. The Grimlings were fast, but Kael was faster, his movements precise and calculated. One by one, the demons fell, their bodies dissolving into shadow.

As the last Grimling collapsed, Kael stood panting, his body trembling from the exertion. He approached the portal, his eyes narrowing as he studied it. The energy it emitted was strange, almost familiar, but he couldn't place it.

Before he could investigate further, his Hunter's Band beeped, signaling the completion of his quest.

Kael allowed himself a small smile, the first in what felt like a long time. He had taken the first step on his journey, and he knew that this was only the beginning.

As he turned to leave, the shadows around him seemed to shift, and Nyx's voice echoed in his mind.

"Not bad, Kael," the small demon king said, his tone a mix of amusement and approval. "But don't get too comfortable. The real challenges are yet to come."

Kael's smile faded, replaced by a look of determination. "I know," he said quietly. "And I'll be ready."

With that, he disappeared into the shadows, his path clear and his resolve unshakable.
