Pain.
That was something Xia Weiwei thought she would never feel again. As a dead person, she thought she would feel like she was in limbo, or maybe she should be walking along golden streets decorated with expensive gemstones and meeting people wearing white robes. Isn't that how heaven is described in many books? Weiwei thought.
'My stupidity couldn't have landed me in hell, could it?' her thoughts were all jumbled up. 'I mean, I know I was stupid when I was alive but that shouldn't be so bad that I'd end up in Lucifer's paradise (note the sarcasm?)' 'I should at most be in purgatory or some other place where dead people suffer a little while waiting for their turn to enter heaven. But this headache is killing me.'
Xia Weiwei could not think straight, she was experiencing a splitting headache and it was making her confused. She didn't expect dead people to feel pain. She remembered how she had jumped off a cliff, and the rocks piercing and cutting her flesh and breaking her bones. She was pretty sure she had died. So, why was she in pain? And why was she hearing familiar voices? Including Mo Shian's voice. He had been dead for more than a week, so, how could he speak? It was all so confusing.
So, Weiwei did what should be done in a situation like this, pretend to be asleep and listen to find out what was happening.
"Gu Yan, why isn't she awake yet? You said it was only fever but she has been unconscious for hours." That was definitely Mo Shian's voice, and he sounded so worried and worked up as if he would punch his friend, Gu Yan, in the face if Weiwei didn't wake up. Gu Yan was one of Mo Shian's childhood friends. He was a doctor, and the best and most sought-after doctor in City Y. Even though he was only twenty-four years old, his medical skills could literally pull a dead person back from the Yellow River. But he only treated the patients he felt like treating.
Weiwei remembered that during Mo Shian's funeral, his three closest friends had attended and treated her like she was the devil reincarnate. Gu Yan had said,
"He should never have married you. He loved you so much but all you gave him was pain and heartbreak. You didn't deserve him."
While Weiwei was reminiscing about the past, she heard Gu Yan's reply,
"Relax, Mo Shian; she will be awake in a few minutes. I gave her my best medication, remember? The one I have spent months in the laboratory researching. I can't believe you made me use that to treat a cold. That medication is precious and should only be used by people who are on their last breath to give them a new lease of life", Gu Yan complained.
"Everything that concerns your wife makes you lose sense and rationality completely. I don't get how you can love her so much yet she treats you like trash." Gu Yan continued.
"Shut up or I will punch on to the other side of town if I hear you talk about Weiwei that way again." Came Mo Shian's reply.
"Love surely makes people stupid." Gu Yan continued,
"You are the most feared and almost worshipped CEO of Mo Corporation, businessmen and women of all ages praise you for being the most outstanding young man in City Y, and probably the entire country in the next few years, but when it comes to your wife, you are like a little loyal and lost puppy. I don't get it."
"You will get it the day you meet the right person and fall in love with them. You will love them more than your own life." Mo Shian shot back.
"I hope that never happens if I am going to turn into an idiot like you buddy," Gu Yan said.
"By the way, aren't you avoiding her? You should leave now if you don't want her to know that you've been here, she will wake up in less than five minutes." Continued Gu Yan.
"Alright, let's go, I postponed the meeting with CY Corporation, it starts in an hour." Replied Mo Shian.
"Isn't that the deal you've been working to get for the past two years? It will take Mo Corporation to another level once it goes through." Asked Gu Yan as he packed his stuff.
"Yes, that's the one. CEO Clinton finally agreed to the partnership. He flew in yesterday and we were supposed to meet this morning, but I couldn't leave Weiwei like this and go to the office. I wouldn't concentrate on the meeting anyway. I would just be worried." Explained Mo Shian.
"Man, I really don't know what to say about you. What if he changed his mind or thought you were being disrespectful and that's why you would postpone such an important meeting at the last minute? You waited for two years and you would throw away all the effort and hard work to stay home because your wife caught a cold?" Gu Yan asked as he finished packing and got up.
"Nothing is more important than Weiwei, not even the company. Let's go before she wakes up" replied Mo Shian as he walked out the door of their master bedroom where Weiwei slept.
Xia Weiwei continued to lie on the bed with her eyes closed as she processed everything she had just heard. Even though she was a bit slow, she could already understand that something unusual had happened. God must have been watching and listening to her when she jumped off that cliff and decided to give her another chance. She had gone through a rebirth and had gone back five years before her tragic death. It was during the time things had started to go wrong in her marriage with Mo Shian and he had moved to the guestroom not too long ago.
She remembers she had caught a cold the previous day and was running a high fever. She had woken up to find Aunt Wu, the housekeeper, beside her bed. She had said she had called a doctor and he had just left.
