Chapter 1 - entering jungle and seeing shakuntala

(King dushyant and the charioteer enter the jungle , sitting on the chariot and holding bow and arrow in their hands, following the deer.)

Charioteer : ( looking at the king and deer ) seeing this black deer and holding bow in your hand reminds me of pinakapani shiv chasing the deer of fame. That is, chasing the deer with bow and arrow in your hand, you appear to me like lord Shiva himself.

King-- O charioteer! This deer has taken us far away, yet look -

It is turning its neck towards our chariot and looking at it with fascination, and fearing that it might get hit by an arrow, it has pulled its hind part = back towards the front part of its body (neck), and is running, jumping in the sky, dropping the half-chewed kusha grass on the road from its mouth, which is open due to exertion. Its feet touch the ground only occasionally.

Charioteer- king! Due to uneven terrain, I have reduced the speed of the chariot by pulling the reins of the reins. That is why this deer has gone so far, but now it has reached a flat ground. Now it is not difficult for you to find it.

King-So now loosen the reins of the horses and speed up the chariot so that I can kill the deer.

Charioteer-As per king's orders

King

Look-look-

As soon as the reins are pulled, the horses of the chariot lengthen the front part of their bodies and raise their necks and ears calmly, as if they are unable to bear the speed of a running deer and hence are running with such speed that even the dust raised by their feet cannot catch up with them.

King-(Happily) Certainly the speed of these horses has increased more than the speed of a deer because --

The things which appear small at first like trees, suddenly become bigger. The trees, rows etc. which are broken in the middle also appear joined together due to the speed of the chariot and the things which are crooked by nature also appear straight to the eyes. What more should I say, due to the speed of this chariot no thing is far from me and no thing stays near me. That is, due to the speed of the chariot, the thing which is nearby goes far away in a moment.

Sut! Look at this deer being killed by me, (pretends to aim an arrow at the bow).

(In the background) Oh King! This is the deer of the ashram. Hence it is inviolable. It is not for you to kill. You should not kill it, you should not kill it.

Charioteer-(hearing and looking in front of him) king! In the midst of shooting your arrows The ascetic has come and stood in the form of an obstacle. (Attacking him will lead to the sin of killing a brahmin, so do not shoot the arrow.)

KING (nervously): Tighten the reins of the horses and stop the chariot.

Charioteer-As expected by the king (stops the chariot by pulling the reins of the horses.)

(After that Vaikhanas-ascetic enters along with his disciples)

Ascetic- (raising his hand) Oh king! This is the deer of the ashram, not of the forest. So this

It is inevitable, please do not kill it.

Do not drop that arrow on the soft body of the deer like a flower on a heap or a bunch of cotton on fire, do not drop it, because where are the very soft bodies and souls of these poor deers and where are your arrows as hard and sharp as thunderbolts. That is, the target of your arrows should be lions, tigers etc. and not the soft souls of these deers. Therefore, please do not kill them.

Therefore, take down the arrow you have researched from the bow, because this arrow of yours is meant only for the protection of suffering beings and not for killing innocent creatures.

King-I have taken back my arrow (takes the arrow off the bow.)

Ascetic - (Happily) Being the lamp of the family, it is in keeping with the dignity of your clan that you, to protect the dignity of this ashram.

For you, who was born in the lineage of the great devotee of his father, Rajarshi Puru, it is completely appropriate to grant protection to this ashram and to accept the hopes of the ascetics. Therefore, O King! May you get a son like you who is endowed with all the virtues.

Both- King! You must surely get a son.

King (bowing) I accept your blessings.

Ascetic: O King! We have come to bring the materials for the havan like wood, kusha etc.I am going to the forest. Look, right in front of us is the ashram of our Guruvar Kulpati Maharshi Kanva on the bank of river Malini. If you do not miss any important work, then you should come to this ashram and receive hospitality. And more--

By looking at the graceful and uninterrupted activities of those ascetics whose only wealth is austerity, you yourself will know how much and to what extent my arm marked with the mark of the bow-string protects.

King: Is the Chancellor Maharishi Kanva present at the Ashram at this time?

Ascetic: Just some time ago, the Chancellor has gone to Somtirtha to seek unseen peace for the girl, having entrusted the responsibility of hospitality to his daughter Shakuntala.

King- Well then I will meet the daughter of the Chancellor Shakuntala. She will inform the sage about my devotion and respect for him when he comes.

Ascetic: Well, we are leaving.

King: Charioteer! Drive the horses, come, let us go to this hermitage and purify ourselves by visiting the most pious hermitage etc.

Charioteer-As per king's command (pretends to drive the chariot fast).

King- (Looking around) Charioteer! Without being told, it is clear that this is the region near the ashram.

Charioteer-How?

King: Don't you see, here-

The food of the sages is seen scattered here and there under the Nivar trees, which appears to have fallen from the mouths of the young pigs sitting in their nests. Here and there, there are smooth pieces of stone lying after grinding the fruits of the Ingudi. The deer and birds here do not run away even at the sound of the chariot. And the lines of water dripping from the bark clothes of the sages coming after bathing are visible on the parts of the water reservoirs. From this it is clear that now we have reached the boundary of the ashram.

Charioteer-Your argument is absolutely logical, that is, this is the area of the ashram.

King- (walking some distance further) Charioteer! You should take care that the decorum of this ashram is not violated

Stop the chariot here so that I can get down from the chariot. (Now I will get down and walk on foot). Charioteer-king! I have stopped the chariot by pulling the reins of the horses. Sir, now get down from the chariot.

King-(getting down from the chariot) Charioteer! One should enter the ashram in a humble manner. Therefore, keep these ornaments and bow of mine here (giving the ornaments and bow to the charioteer) Charioteer! Till the time I return after meeting the people of the ashram, you untie these horses from the chariot and cool their backs and refresh them by rubbing them and giving them grass and water.

Raja- (Walking a little ahead and looking ahead) This is the region of the ashram. Well, now I enter it. (Indicating twitching of the right arm after entering the door of the ashram.)

This ashram is a peaceful place, but my right arm is twitching. How can this auspicious omen be fruitful in this hermitage? Or it can be, the doors of destiny are everywhere. ॥16॥ ( In the special omens, the twitching of a man's right arm is considered auspicious and beneficial for a beautiful woman. )

King- (Listening) I can hear some conversation on the right side of this garden. Ok, let me go here first, (going a little ahead and looking ahead) These daughters of ascetics are coming this way to water the plants with small watering pots of their own size. (Looking carefully) Oh, their beautiful form and shape have grown very captivating.

If the girls living in this ascetic life can have such a beautiful appearance, which is difficult to get even in a royal palace, then it must be said that the jungle creepers have surpassed the refined creepers of the garden with their qualities like beauty, tenderness etc.

(Shakuntala enters with two of her friends, watering the roots of the plants) Shakuntala-O dear friends! Come here, come here.

Anasuya: O friend Shakuntale! I think that Kanva loves these small plants of the ashram more than you. That is why he has employed you, who has a soft body like the flowers of Newari, to give water to these plants.

Shakuntala- Dear friend! It is not that it is my father's order, rather I have the affection of a brother for these trees.

King-(thinking) Is this Kanva's daughter Shakuntala? (With surprise) Oh! Maharishi Kanva is doing a very wrong thing by making this tender girl do difficult tasks like following the religion of the ashram and watering the trees. Because -This sage wants to make this girl, who has a naturally beautiful body, fit for penance. It is as if they want to cut the hard and thorny branch of the Shami tree with the edge of the soft blue lotus leaves. The meaning is that Shakuntala is like the soft leaf of Nilotpal and penance is like the hard Shami tree with thorns. Just as the hard branch of the Shami tree cannot be cut with the edge of a blue lotus petal, similarly penance cannot be done with the soft body of Shakuntala. Here the word Neel indicates the similarity of the black colour of the iron of the sword.

Well, I see this girl Shakuntala roaming around fearlessly hiding behind the trees. (I do that)

Shakuntala- friend Anasuye! See Priyamvada has tied my bark cloth (choli) so tightly that I am in great pain. Please loosen it a little.

Anasuya-yes. (loosens her blouse)

Priyambada (laughing) In this you blame the beginning of your youth, due to which your status is constantly increasing, why do you blame me. The meaning is that due to the emergence of new youth, your quirks are constantly increasing, after all, I have not tied it tightly.

Raja-You are right.

on the pectoral region where the micro-glands are located and to expand the pair of large breasts. The beautiful natural beauty of the girl Shakuntala is being hidden by this bark cloth in the same way as the beauty of delicate flowers is suppressed when they are covered with old leaves.

Or, even if we accept that this bark is not in keeping with the beauty of its body, it is not the case that it is not enhancing the beauty of its body like an ornament, because -

A lotus flower looks more beautiful even when surrounded by algae. Just as the stain on the moon, despite being dirty, enhances the beauty of the moon. Similarly, this tender-bodied girl Shakuntala also looks more beautiful in this bark cloth. It is true, what object is not beautiful for those with a beautiful and charming figure.

Shakuntala - (looking ahead) Dear friends, this saffron tree seems to be calling me with its soft fingers in the form of leaves swaying in the wind. So I go near it. Turns around)

Priyamvada: O friend Shakuntale! You stay near this saffron tree for some time.

Shakuntala, what is the reason?

Priyamvada – Because by standing near you this saffron tree appears as if decorated with beautiful soft creepers.

Shakuntala: Oh, my friend! That is why you are called Priyambada, your name is Anvartha.

Raja-Priyambada is telling the truth, because -

The lips of this Shakuntala are red like soft leaves and both her arms appear as soft as tender branches, the alluring youthfulness in her body also appears like blooming flowers. Hence this girl clearly appears like a creeper.

Anasuya: Sakhi Shakuntala! Under this mango plants, Swayambaravadhu is this Navamalika.

Have you forgotten the one you named Vanjyotsna? Will you not water it?

Shakuntala, if I forget this too, then I will forget myself. ( Going to creeper and seeing ) See friend! This beautiful summer has become a sexual pleasure for this plant couple (Navmallika and mango), because on one side this Navmallika is becoming youthful with the arrival of new flowers and on the other side the mango is becoming fit for consumption due to the weight of fruits.
