I ran towards my mum as I held onto her gown"I am going to the market now," she said as she hurriedly walked outside our little home. It was a small house at the edge of the village, and the people were mostly gatherers and traders, such as my parents."Don't go to the forest Dalla, and take care of your little brother." She squatted to my level as she kissed my cheeks, and my dad ruffled my hair. They both stepped out, and I waved to them both. "We will be back soon," my dad yelled as I watched them walk away.I closed the door and looked at my chubby baby brother, he was cute and in his cot stretching out his grubby hand towards me, he had blonde hair and a cute dimple and round cheeks with cute little teeth, and his eyes were blue, I looked at him, we had such contrasting features that the villagers found it hard to believe we were siblings but I loved him all the same. I fed him when he started fussing and then I carried him as we sat on the rocking chair and sang a little to him, he slept off in my little arms, and I was careful to carry him back to his cot so as not to awaken him. After some minutes of lying down, I couldn't sleep, I was restless so I went and sat by the window awaiting my parents, as I stared at the forest and bushes, I saw a little fluffy white creature, I stretched trying to get a better view but it was hiding under some bushes, soon I noticed it was a rabbit, it was so cute with its long ears and I wanted a better view so I opened the door to go out, I glanced back at my sleeping brother as I recalled my mum's words not to go to the forest but I just wanted a view and would not stay too long or go far, I thought to myself. Glancing back once more at my brother, I stepped out and closed the door as I advanced slowly towards the rabbit, as I got closer, my floral gown brushed against a shrub and startled the rabbit, it scurried away and I dashed following it, it took a turn in the forest and farther more as I pursued it along that path, soon I realized I had lost sight of it and decided to make my way back home. Looking around, I noticed I didn't know the path I came from, I was lost in the thick forest, I made a turn to the right and walked for some minutes along the path but it seemed I was walking more into the forest, the trees were thicker and the path was almost nonexistent, I was scared as the sun was setting and my baby brother was all alone at home, I ran, crying and screaming for help as my little legs couldn't carry me any further, it was hopeless I was lost and tired, I sat on a rock as I stared at the setting sun, I was thirsty and scared that my parents would soon be back home and get worried searching for me. I got up and followed the rocky path, till I reached a cave, I thought I would rest a little inside and then after continue walking in an opposite direction, I walked into the darkness, feeling my way in, I heard a cracking sound as I walked, I looked around in fright but I couldn't see anything, it must be my imagination, I sat on the ground and hugged my knees to myself. Almost dozing off, I saw a light in the distance as I rocked myself to ease my fear, it was like a huge lamp floating and then before I could contemplate what was going on the cave lit up, I looked around in fascination and then I followed the light, I walked into the cave staring at the lamps that hung on each side of the wall till I saw a stone image of a man, his face seemed like he was in agony, frozen in stone, I walked towards it as I touched it, I could feel its rough surface, as I walked round in fascination, my finger caught on a sharp edge of the stone and then withdrew blood."Ouch," I said sucking on my finger and the tiny scratch it made, as I turned back from the image, I heard a loud cracking sound and turned to see the image breaking out of the stone, I was so frightened that I fell backward and couldn't move from how my small body shook, there, was a huge man, real, he towered over me in his height as he looked at me in wonder, I screamed and with all the strength my tired body could muster ran out of the cave in fright, my high pitched voice echoing as I ran along, I had never seen a man as huge as him, I ran out of the cage as fast as my little legs could carry me, I was about to step out of the cage when I was caught by the man.I struggled, but he was much stronger than me. After a while, I became still in fear of what the huge man might do. "What is your name little one" he thundered, I couldn't help quivering as he held me by the hand. "Calm down little one, I won't hurt you, I just want to know how you released me from the cave I have been cursed into since I was a teen" he said staring at me. He had a firm but gentle hold on me and before long, I calmed down enough to talk "Dalla" I whispered tentatively. "What?" he asked not quite catching what I said"My name is Dalla, I…I got lost in the forest and… need to get back, my baby brother is all alone at home" I stuttered as I spoke to himHis eyes widened in fascination and disbelief as he heard my voice clearly."How?, it can't be?" he said as if in disbelief, releasing my hand, I scrambled to the corner and stared at the huge stranger as he paced around."How is it that I have a connection to you? That must be why you were able to free me" he muttered quietly to himself "I shall help you get home little one" he turned towards me "Now hop on my back" he bent his huge frame to allow me climb on, I contemplated it for a moment as I stared at the man, I knew I was lost and had to go home to my brother who would probably be awake and hungry. Sighing, I climbed onto his back reluctantly, seeing I needed help to get home. "I stay at the old house by the edge of the forest near the brook" I informed him as I held onto the strange man by his neck, my tiny legs wrapped around his waist, he didn't say anything but closed his eyes and listened, he turned towards the left and before I could say anything else he said "Hold on" I barely did when he began to run, he was so fast that I could see the trees blur past as my dark curls flew as we passed in a flash, before I blinked we were at the front of my house. I jumped down from his back and wobbled a little, my tummy feeling queasy from the run, I ran to a nearby bush and threw up all the contents in my stomach. I sat still on the floor to stop the dizziness and after a while things weren't spinning. We came just in time before my parents could know I had left the house, immediately I ran into the house to checkup on my brother but he was still sleeping peacefully. I walked slowly back outside and saw the man waiting for me, looking shyly at him I said "Thank you sir" no stranger had ever helped me before."You welcome little one" he said squatting to my level and bopping my nose "We shall meet again but for now I have to go, thank you for releasing me, I shall keep an eye on you from the distance but when it's time we shall meet again" he said staring directly at me. "Stay out of arms way little one, I shall be back for you" he said as he disappeared into the forest, I looked round and called out to the stranger but there was no one, it was like he vanished, I walked back into the house thinking about the kind stranger I met as I awaited the arrival of my parents.
