Chapter 1 - Reborn

Sun Tae was a normal man, working at the morgue. He was dull to the sight of dead people, perhaps that was why he was chosen… It had been a stormy night, Tae was just about to cremate another poor soul, when a sharp pain shot through his head. He stumbled backwards, disoriented by the sudden pain. He closed his eyes, trying to re-adjust himself but when he opened his eyes, he was no longer in the morgue but he laid in a bed, his bed, back in Seoul. Had he dreamed of going to work? What a lame dream…

Then, there was that sharp pain again, this time heavier than before. Memories, they were flooding in. The life he witnessed was similar to his own but at the same time different. He grew up in Seoul as an only child, he worked himself through school and eventually began working at a morgue. Though there were a few differences. His parents? Dead but that wasn't the biggest revelation, what was was that he was in the world of Solo Leveling, nine years after the emergence of hunters. He himself wasn't a hunter, or rather he hadn't been until he crossed over. Now, he could feel the power humming beneath his skin, the unmistakable force beyond human capability.

What should he do?

He had knowledge of the future, shouldn't he use that?

It would be a waste just continuing to work at the morgue when he was a hunter… first thing though, he had to get to work, he could get evaluated after. If he was a low ranking hunter, it wouldn't be wise to abandon his job.

Tae got up and washed himself, before driving to the morgue. Morgues were even more needed than in his old world, with the many hunters dying every day. Most of the hunters were of low rank and it was quite easy for a low ranking hunter to die during a raid.

His first 'patient' of the day was an E rank hunter, blonde, relatively young, had just died that morning. Tae went to clean him up but when his fingers brushed against the corpse, a screen appeared before him.

[Subject is able to be extracted, choose one:

Physique: E rank

Senses: E rank

Mana: F rank

Swordsmanship: E rank

Power Boost: E rank]

Was this his cheat? Could he absorb the skills of those he touched? He selected Physique and immediately could feel his power growing. It wasn't just a hallucination, he could feel the difference in strength. He turned to his partner, a young woman and patted her on the shoulder.

[Subject must be dead for extraction]

The system told him.

"Yes, Sun?", she asked.

"I need to go to the toilet, can you cover me?", he lied.

"Sure, go ahead", she smiled brightly. So he could copy the skills of the dead? As he walked to the bathroom, his fingers brushed over the corpse of a c rank hunter who had been lying there for a few days. His body needed some work to be reconstructed, after all, he was mauled to death.

[Subject has been dead for too long]

So they needed to be recently dead… this only cemented his plan. Had the copying worked on people who were long dead, he might've stayed in the morgue a little longer but now, now he was sure to become a hunter. Death was everywhere in gates, perfect breeding ground for his power to grow.

After his shift was over, he made an online appointment for evaluation and quit his job. He was likely not high rank yet but in the future, he could get reevaluated either way, so no harm in becoming a low rank hunter for now.

The next morning, he arrived at the hunters association and sat down, waiting for his evaluation. A young woman exited the evaluation room, a happy smile on her face, "C rank!", she sang, "I am C rank!"

Immediately, the recruiters sprang on her. As long as you were a D rank or above, you were almost guaranteed to get recruited by at least a small guild. If you were a B rank or above, you would even be recruited by one of the bigger guilds.

"Sun Tae!", the personnel called out and he walked up to the testing room, "just place your palm on the device and it will be measuring your rank"

He placed his palm on the huge orb and waited. A few seconds later, the man at the machine clicked her tongue, "D rank. I will have your hunter identification card in a few moments…"

D rank? At least it wasn't E rank, though he secretly hoped for something more. He hadn't even planned on joining a guild but now he didn't even have the option to join a good one. Soon, the man came with his ID and guided him out, his ID hanging off his neck.

Some of the smaller guilds approached him but he didn't get persuaded. They had nothing to offer him.

His next stop was the equipment store, he needed a good weapon. Luckily, he had some money saved up thanks to his job. His previous body owner had planned on a vacation but the funds were now better used to buy himself a weapon. He didn't have enough to buy himself armor too, so he just bought a sturdy spear. Spears were easy to use for newbies. He could've also bought a dagger but that felt like copying the answers to a test. Sung Jin Woo used daggers, he wouldn't.

He discovered that his system had an inventory too, so he placed the spear in there and began browsing raiding parties in Seoul. He found a few raiding E rank gates, so he chose one at random. The raid would begin the next day. The gate had opened in a warehouse and was likely a skeleton or goblin gate, nothing too dangerous. He spent the rest of the day getting familiar with his new spear in his apartment.
