Chapter 10 - chapter 10: Finished shopping

After finishing his shopping, Adam casually strolled back to the dumpster where he'd left his two idiot slaves—er, soon-to-be employees. They were still there, tied up and unconscious, looking like a special delivery package that nobody wanted.

He grabbed their legs in one hand, his shopping bags in another, and his son—still safely tucked inside his armor—secured against his chest.

To make sure he had everything, he did a quick mental checklist.

"Slaves, check. Milk, check. Clothes, check. Money bag, check. Meat, check. My little son, check."

Satisfied, he bent his knees slightly, then jumped.

Another mini-earthquake shook the area.

Again.

Somewhere in the distance, a concerned citizen probably called the news, wondering if a minor rift had just exploded in the city. Someone else probably dropped their coffee. A poor cat, peacefully sleeping on a rooftop, was rudely launched into the air.

Adam, of course, remained blissfully unaware.

After landing back home with a loud BOOM (thankfully, the house was still standing), Adam placed everything in its proper place. He set the food on the counter, sorted the clothes, carefully removed his son from the armor, and then—with the same level of care—tossed the two fools onto the ground like sacks of expired potatoes.

With a swift motion, he untied them and announced in a voice as casual as if he were discussing the weather, "From now on, you two will work here. Your job is to look after the house and take care of my son. Got it?"

Hans and Bam groggily sat up, their brains still rebooting after the unexpected kidnapping experience. Their eyes darted to Adam, then to each other, then back to Adam.

They began whispering urgently.

Hans, panicked: "What do we do? This guy looks like a high-ranker. He freaking jumped us here in one go!"

Bam, equally panicked: "Yeah, yeah, I saw! We'd be dead if we pissed him off!"

Hans, whispering even quieter: "Then why are we still alive?"

Bam thought about it for a moment, then whispered back, "Maybe he wants to eat us later."

Hans: "WHAT?"

Adam, overhearing: "I don't eat humans."

Both of them flinched and immediately straightened up like two terrified schoolboys.

A brief moment of silence.

Hans, quickly adapting to their new reality: "...So we work for him?"

Bam, nodding: "We work for him."

They both turned back to Adam and, with a synchronized bow, said, "We accept!"

Then, cautiously, Hans asked, "Uh... how much will we be paid?"

Adam tilted his head, confused by the question. "Paid?"

Hans and Bam nodded rapidly.

Adam thought about it for a second before responding, "You're already paid—with your lives."

He was joking.

And ,

They believed him.

Hans turned pale. Bam turned paler. Both of them nodded like obedient little servants, as if afraid that if they said the wrong thing, they'd suddenly stop being paid.

Bam, trying to sound grateful: "W-We appreciate the generous salary, boss!"

Hans, sweating:Really, it's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work for you!

Adam sighed, shaking his head.

People here really can't take a joke.
